Patriots release Stanback

The New England Patriots have announce the signing of LB Derrick Burgess today and the release of LB Bruce Davis and WR Isaiah Stanback via their Twitter page.

Big surprise here. Boy does our receiver depth look different now.

Hurry hurry. Snatch him back up before someone else gets him.

I kinda wish the Cowboys had taken Stanback as a QB, and given him the two to three years of bench time he'd need to work on his technique. He had lousy footwork in college (apparantly), but had a cannon arm. It's probably too late for him to do that now. Wasted opportunity. Could he have been that worse than Brad Johnson/whatsisface?

In reality, odds on hitting in the fourth round of the draft aren't that good anyways.

Oh, and Crayton was a WR in college who played one year of QB, not the other way around.

Plenty of players are 4th rounders and pan out.

4th round isn't the spot for projects.

Didn't this guy run like a 4.58 40? Surely he won't stay on the free agent market long with speed like that...

I'd agree that the QB to WR transition is a pretty big gamble.

Antwaan Randle El, Ronald Curry, Matt Jones, Brad Smith, Isaiah Stanback .... it isn't a particularly impressive list.

But as for other projects ---

1. Is a DE to outside LB conversion a project?

-- It is less of a project than a QB to WR conversion, of course, but it is a project, IMO. At least a small one.

2. How about "the great athlete who doesn't have a true position"?

-- Devin Hester and Antonio Cromartie fall into this category. Each of these guys is worth at least a 3rd round pick, IMO.

was he one of Jeff Ireland's pick?
No.

He was Jeff's Pet Cat. Ireland couldn't stop gushing about the kid after the draft... LOL!

was this the next josh cribbs?

because Skyler Green was supposed to be the next Dante Hall.

I wonder if jeff ireland still makes those comparisons to guys he drafts.

No offense taken.

I don't mean to sound arrogant, either.

As far as why the Patriots signed him, I could only suggest that they felt the athletic ability he was blessed with was worth the minimum price tag they payed for him. They gave up far less for him than we did...

Like I said (somewhere), I'm not against these projects (although I prefer they not be changing sports or positions)...I'm just against these projects if it requires giving up more than say a 6th round draft pick for them.

It's simply my take on it....and it goes for all players like Stanback. It's not personal.

FWIW, I still don't see what anyone saw on the field outside of pure athleticism, speed, and some minimal return ability. As a wide receiver, at least to me.....he looked so bad I struggle for adjectives to describe it. It just wasn't there to me....fully willing to admit I'm no professional scout, and that I wasn't granted with the access to film and practices they were...but man, I just thought he sucked. Looked VERY unnatural. Very uncomfortable.

Again, just my opinion....and in no way do I intend this to come across as an "I told you so" post. I can respect those who saw what I didn't....I just can't see it myself.

That's an excellent post, but you lost points for spelling his name correctly. We would have accepted "Stanbeck" or "Stanbach."

PS, Does tr1 know about this? He's a huge Stenback guy.

Wow. I thought he was going to take that QB job from Brady.

All right, fanatic...I'll bite. Since you claim New York roots, how did you get on the Cowboy wagon?

No, no, no....that just wasn't the order of the 'universe' while Parcells was here. Parcells was no one's 'check' man!:lmao: Check...:laugh2:

Just think....Tony Romo, Miles Austin, Patrick Crayton, and Jay Ratliff would have LOVED 4th round pay when they started.

I said when we kept him protected and not Matt Moore... it was a mistake I still think it would have been better to keep Matt than Stan

Here's a link to some drafts. Take a look at the percentage of solid hits vs guys who washed out or are career backups. The sucess rate is not that high. Even the third round isn't that impressive. Though 2006 did provide a number of ProBowlers out of the 4th round, it doesn't appear to be a slamdunk. The Cowboys look to be about 50% in that round, so that's not bad.

2006 and 2007 were putrid drafts for us. 2005 was OK, but looking out those three years is alarming.

Jeff thought he would be something, but Jerruh was the reason he hung on as long as he did.
