The New England Patriots have announce the signing of LB Derrick Burgess today and the release of LB Bruce Davis and WR Isaiah Stanback via their Twitter page.

Big surprise here. Boy does our receiver depth look different now.

Wow. I thought he was going to take that QB job from Brady.

Stanback was one of those long shot projects to begin with. No huge shock that he couldn't catch on. Which makes it even more of a head scratcher as to why Dallas felt the need to burn a high 4th round pick on him.

I don't think the AOA situation is much different. Stanbeck had athletic ability, prospects such as that can pay off in the 4th - I'm fine with gambles like that, it's just to bad it didn't work out for either party.

Really?

Stanback was a QB in college.

AOA was a starter at FS in college and played the position well.

I don't even see the comparison.

This was an Ireland pet cat, you know he just couldn't stay healthy. Wonder if that had something to do with his dismissal in New England.

Wide Reciever Manuel Johnson has a great chance to make it on the NFL level having pure/natural football presence, beit polar opposite to Isaiah Stanback who was considered pretty much an athletic freak and a Classic QB/WR tweener without a true position.

That would've happened, but didn't you hear? Robert Kraft is just like Jerry Jones - just hands jobs to favored starters, not letting them earn them, and not letting the younger guys compete for those spots.

Stanbeck was a QB once, AOA was a CB once. Both switched positions. Both got drafted first and foremost because of their athletic ability. Both went in the fourth round because it is a late enough round to gamble on a guy who may not be as polished, but still possesses the athletic ability of a higher round pick. Saying AOA was "a starter at FS in college and played the position well" doesn't mean much coming from division II. Again, both were chosen for their freak ability, that was the comparison I saw.

I guess it could be a stretch of a comparison - my bad, I'll go back to lurking/trolling.

Exactly....there's no comparison.

Not sure how they compare. Stanbeck was converted to WR by Dallas on an experiment - he wasn't a WR coming out of college. AOA was drafted for FS and played CB/S in college - so no experimenting there.

There isn't an apples to apples comparison at all. Stanback was a sprinter turned football player--he never really got the intricacies of the game. AOA is a raw, but polished player...if that makes any sense. He's got some skills in some areas that are already on the NFL level. Then again, he needs some work in other areas.

Other than speed, Stanback has always needed work at something.

Can someone just lie and agree with me, I'm getting cold and lonely.

I'm just going to pretend that my goal was to hijack this thread and turn it into an AOA love fest. mission accomplished.

EDIT: Actually my initial goal was to hijack the thread and turn it into a "1997 Pontiac Grand AM GT" love fest. Please continue, Americas_fan. Does it have a name?
