A top 10 #5 WR.

The don't think he even wants to be a WR. Good luck motivating a guy like that on top of developing someone who can't stay healthy.

It looks like Isaiah Stanback picked the one team that wanted to try him at quarterback.

Patriots | Stanback signs with practice squad

Jason La Canfora, of the NFL Network, reports the New England Patriots have signed free-agent WR Isaiah Stanback (Cowboys) to their practice squad. The team is planning to move him to quarterback.

Patriots signed QB/WR Isaiah Stanback to their practice squad.
NFL.com's Jason La Canfora notes that the 2007 fourth-round pick got "lots" of offers from other teams, but the Pats were the only one willing to let him play QB, his college position. Stanback was tried at wideout in Dallas.

Even if Stanback managed to somehow put it all together, I still wouldn't blame Jerry & co. for releasing him. Stanback had enough time to develop and distinguish himself and it has not happened. The way this team is constructed particularly at WR, the Cowboys need a guy they can depend on to be a viable option at WR if needed. Ogletree in 2 months has proven to be that guy, Stanback in 3 seasons has not. Stanback has worked hard and at least tried to do the right things as a member of the Cowboys, so I wish him good luck and health.
This was his 2nd offseason as a WR. That's typically not "enough" time for a receiver that's been playing the position all his life, much less one that's never played it.

But, by the looks of things he never wanted to play WR and possibly wouldn't ever develop as one due to him wanting to be a QB.

Patrick Crayton and Antwaan Randle El beg to differ.

It actually took Crayton several years to develop into a respectable wide receiver. But he and Randel El saw playing time early because they didn't have anyone ahead of them that were better at the time.

The earliest Stanback could have seen the field was 2008. And with so many good WRs ahead of him, that wasn't going to happen.

I have no doubt that you could have stuck Stanback in that 2004 Cowboys roster and he would have come up with at least 12 catches to match Crayton's.

Looks like he won't be a WR for them.

i still think we should have brought him in as a QB from the beginning.

Agree wholeheartedly. Or just never even drafted him to begin with.

Isaiah Stanback struggled for two seasons with a shoulder that kept pooping out while trying to adjust to playing wide receiver.

That isn't a sign of encouragement for switching to quarterback, IMO.

I've never liked the idea of bringing in a QB to be a WR. Very seldom does it work out. Crayton and Randle El are the exceptions, not the rule. Matt Jones can be lumped in with them, too, but drugs got in his way.

The guy was a nice college QB. He isnt an NFL reciever, he is an ok special teamer. Belicheat not gonna be able to turn chicken feathers into chicken salad either.

Maybe as a guy to practice the wildcat when they face Miami?

that makes a lot of sense. After all, they face Miami twice yearly

Maybe he'll be more successful playing quarterback?

Seems that's where his heart truly lies anyway.

Izzy couldn't stay healthy trying to play wide receiver, with no less than a problematic shoulder popping in and out.

That doesn't scream "play me" at quarterback, IMO.

You won't hear me gripe even if he does develop there. Clearly, he wasn't developing here. Whether that's his fault or ours, I don't know. But it wasn't working. Maybe New England has the staff that can get something out of him, but he was a waste here.

This is why you cant solely blame Jerry for poor drafting... its the coaching process that can turn a reject like Stanback into a player.

the Pats have a proven track record, Jerry has Wade...
