A very good speed threat who has three consecutive thousand yard years and who is a proven very good player is not worth a first? Why not?

I just think in today's time elite talent is traded for a 1st rounder. I don't think Brandin Cooks is a elite talent. He's a solid receiver. Props to him on getting 1k yards. HE's done it in some very pass friendly systems.

We got Travis Frederick, an All-Pro, for (likely) his career, with the 31st pick. The Patriots got Brandin Cooks, an above average starter, for a year, with the 31st pick. And we're the idiots?

I'd say he is more than above average. And they now got him for an improvement of draft position.

Also, anecdotal evidence is poor evidence. You could say he's not even worth a 6th round pick. Afterall, the Patriots got Tom Brady for his career with one of those. Odds for any first are that he is not going to be as good as Cooks. This is more true for the end of the first round.
