My neighbors want me to put a sign on the abandoned shed inviting whoever did it to meet me in the alley and fight.

No way the sick jerk would show up.

Of course they wouldn't.

It's always easier to kill some defenseless animal than it is to take on something or someone who actually could do something about it.

With my luck the guy would use the invitation sign as proof I am the aggressor. Which I would be. He would need to stick his toothbrush up his trash to brush his teeth before I was done.

This cat was killed because it was friendly and trusting. That is simply a fact.

That sucks. I'm very sorry to hear that Hos and send my thoughts to your neighor and friend. I feel for her.

It takes a real sick person to want to do something like that. Probably some stupid teenager who thought it would be just hilarious for that lady to find one of her cats hung in the shed.

Or a serial killer in the making, as some have pointed out, but either way a really pathetic person.

You know it would ALMOST be worth it for someone to do this to one of my cats If I could catch the Dick-less ******* that did it.

They wouldn't do it again.

John Travolta in Pulp Fiction said this, not you.

Folks, I told Mary Louise about a half hour ago that you all send your best wishes. She said to tell you thank you. I really love this old gal. She is a firecracker. She was an Army Nurse in Korea. She is an African American and has seen some of the darkest sides of humanity. She is

She started caring for these cats about 5 years ago. It pissed some people off at first, but gradually they have come to accept that she just has a good heart.

In truth, Fluffy belonged to someone who used to live nearby and he simply moved and became homeless because she was so loving to these cats. Jennifer that used to own him is long gone. She was sad at first that Fluffy wouldn't come home any more, but she gradually grew to accept that this old lady simply loved him and he was happy.

One of her cats that she calls "Little Big Man" is very skittish towards others. He runs from me every time I take the trash out. I have never threatened that cat in any way. It is just his nature. Not around her. He adores her.

She has one cat that is an indoor cat that lives with her. She doesn't belong to Mary Louise though. She belongs to another neighbor, Billy. Billy is amused that "Kitty" (original name huh?) has adopted Mary Louise. He still pays Kitty's vet bills and he takes food over to Mary Louise's house for Kitty, but she doesn't come home any more.

Like I said, these cats are her babies. I wish I had found Fluffy instead of her. That is what bothers me most. I am sick that she had to see that. Over the 5 years 2 or 3 of her cats have disappeared. Probably hit by cars or some other tragedy.

Little Big Man and Kitty are the last ones left. I don't worry about Little Big Man. He will run away. Kitty is like Fluffy, trusting and loving.

I am going to ask the owner of the shed to let me secure it so no one other than the cats can ever get in without a key again. When I was taking down the rope that hung Fluffy I found an old canon ball in the rubble. I wonder if he'd let me have that in exchange for securing that shed?

This brought back a bad memory from my childhood that I haven't thought of in quite a while.

We always had cats while I was growing up, ... they lived outside but they were always around when we kids were outside playing.

They had kittens once. Some neighbor kid came into our house when we were at the grocery store, and hung one of the kittens with a pipe-cleaner from the springs of my top bunk-bed.

I was 5 or 6 and was the one that found the kitten.

What a sick puke.

This was in 1959 or 60.

I ended up fighting that kid several times over several things as a few years past, but even though he was bigger than me I kicked his butt every time, made him cry and run home because he could not match the rage that I was fighting with.

We moved away, but I wonder whatever happened to that guy.

I love animals, my heart aches for your friend Hos.

I'm sorry to hear all that.
Decent people have to shoulder the rotten in life and there's no getting around it. Forget the loser that did it, chances are you won't get the chance to give him what he deserves.

There's no substituting, but who doesn't love a kitten, if you can get one from the pound for her.

Yes he did say a variation of that and that's why I used it...because it's the truth.

I hate to say this. Several of us in the neighborhood believe it is a 14 year old boy. His first adventure in our neighborhood was to take some blue paint his parents used to paint the fence around their house and he sloshed a weird looking symbol on this rusted metal fence. Same symbol over and over. The paint trail led right back to their house and the paint matched.

The owner of the fence confronted the mother about it. She is a psychiatrist or psychologist, I cannot remember which. She defended him as a good boy and said he would never do anything wrong.

Well, this kid who won't do anything wrong burned down a different shed about 8 months ago.

Killing something seems like the next progression to some of us. Where this cat was hung in the shed is about 30 to 35 yards from his back yard.

Now it could very easily be someone who was just walking up that alley. But this kid knows about that shed. You can bet your boots on that.

Some of us are wondering what we should do. We have no evidence. Just suspicions because it seems he is screaming for attention and has a Mother who is denying there is a problem.

I fixed the hasps on that shed this morning so no one can get without literally breaking the doors to do it. I showed Dan the canon ball. He wanted it for his office. I don't blame him.

It is sad when parents are in denial about their kids behavior. He will never be able to get help because of the parents. Just sad. :(

You made no mention of his father, is he around? I'm sure I don't have to tell you how to approach the kid, but maybe you can talk to him in a non-confrontational manner. Maybe a level headed adult giving him the time of day might be part of what he needs.

Yes, he is around. They are a strange family. They don't socialize with anyone in the neighborhood at all. They have an Irish Setter dog, named Fred, who periodically escapes. I have taken him home at least 3 times. They always act suspicious as to your motives for returning the dog. The front gate is always locked. You ring the bell and about 50% of the time no one will come even though their cars are there.

One time this guy who was tweaking hard on meth jumped the fence and ran through their yard. He stole a bicycle and I thought it belonged to them so I was trying to return it. A friend of theirs had just left their house. She was sure that bicycle was theirs. They wouldn't even come to the door for her. I asked her if she had their phone number and could she call them. She said, "they don't like phone calls." She wanted to take the bicycle and I wouldn't let her. Turns out it wasn't theirs. It belongs to the guy who owns the shed where the cat was hung.

The kid we suspect is aloof. You can't even be friendly to him. He is heavy for his age, has long hair that always seems unwashed, but maybe it's just unkempt, and even in the Summer he will wear a grey hoodie. About the only thing you ever see him do is ride his skateboard around the block.

This is all circumstantial evidence at best, but the kid worries me.

'but the kid worries me'

He should. You said you wanted to know if he haunted the shed. Is there any place out of the way to hang a game camera.

My condolences. I know the type and yes, you are stuck with nothing more than hunches at this point. Not to be a bother, but do ever see this friend of theirs? If she gave that much info, maybe she can be some kind of conduit to at least let them get the drift of the perception surrounding them.

Like Cliff said, surveillance is really the only kind of option you have.
Good luck. These situations suck.
