Didn't feel bad when I posted that, thanks for asking though.

No pass rush, it doesn't matter. This is pretty simple.

Don't assume.

No pass rush, no pass defense. Hmmmm....I read that somewhere.

Not at all. Merely making an observation.
.

Now here's a blast for you. Scandrick isn't that good. He'd be the 3rd best corner on a good defense. Maybe.

But Scandrick gets beat at the highest point of the ball when it comes into then receiver when he plays the bigs. So this wasn't a ringing endorsement for either.

And I believe I posted a thread about Claiborne already. Just show me something. Stay on the field after you make a routine tackle.

The problem is with the front end of this defense like it was last year. Patmon could be an improvement over Webb. My problem is this team is shuffling cards in a 43 card deck.

Fix the front end and the back end will be adequate.

Ok

Though we're terrible at finding 4th rounders, don't overestimate how big their impact should be. There's a reason they're 3rd day guys.

You're just moving the goalposts around. Fourth rounders generally don't get cut after their first season. To try to make B.W. Webb sound like a typical fourth round draft pick is just ridiculous. Statistically there's about a 20% or so success rate of finding a 3-year starter in the fourth round -- about 6 per year. So finding 10 "good" fourth rounders over three years isn't hard at all. There were plenty of good players in the fourth round that year.

Those are misleading figures. There is a 22% (24/107 players) chance that a 4th round pick over the period 2010-2012 would start at least 8 games in that 3 year period. That's not most people's definition of a starter. More of these players are going to end up as backups or taking less than a starters share of snaps. On defense some of these players are now playing more snaps in SPs than they were in the past. So I think we'll see more players contributing significant snaps even if they aren't 'starters'. So a better way to look at this might be snaps rather than starts. This is particularly true on defense but also for TEs, RBs and WRs on offense but to a lesser degree.

You are pretty lucky to get a 4th rounder taking consistent significant snaps as a starter.

Wait, haven't I been hearing how good B.W. Webb and the DL have looked in preseason by members of this board?

Show some posts, then.

Sick of the "didn't people say this" posts...without an evidence.

All i read is people saying the defense isn't as bad as thought, or that Webb isn't the worst corner on our roster.

Very different.

This reminds me of watching Hard Knocks last night. Did you see Rashede Hageman and have you been seeing this guy dog it in practice? No heart. He won't last long. Talk about a bad pick. And to think how some were singing his praises. You just don't know. I hear there were these kinds of red flags, but clearly not as loudly as they should have been.

You might be right about the stat. Still...

From 2011 alone, you've got the following guys starting and contributing in some meaningful way (Earlier it was said that you couldn't find 10 good players drafted in the fourth round over the last 3 years. Here are ten in the same year.):

K.J. Wright
Clint Boling
Jordan Cameron
Sam Acho
Luke Stocker
Kris Durham (granted, not with the team that drafted him)
Quinton Carter (earned starting job with the Broncos as a rookie but has spent the last two years on IR)
Cecil Shorts
Bilal Powell
Julius Thomas

Are they all world beaters? No.

Are they employed right now? Yep.

Okay. Next time I'll waste my time digging up old quotes and calling specific people out so that our particular experiences aren't so different as to make you sick.

can check the records, if i remember correctly and i had been running the draft some of those years, instead of who we picked I would've taken (without the benefit of hindsight):
CB Dominique Franks, WR Cecil Shorts, DE Jared Crick (vice Wilber), and S Phillip Thomas. Believe all these guys would at least still be on our roster.
The point isn't that I'm better than our scouts, but that I'm sure about half the folks in this forum would've also picked better in the 4th and seeing most of our recent- history 4th rounders flame out isn't all that surprising to a lot of us who were scratching our heads at the time of the picks.
Our scouts seem to get a lobotomy in the fourth. We can only pray Hitchens doesn't crash and burn.
and/or possibly that Jerry doesn't send the scouts on coffee break during the 4th round from now on.

Another black eye for the scouting team. You can't be a good football team unless you draft better.

You may be right but most 4ths aren't going to contribute a lot. Some will of course. You really get most of your starters in the first 100 picks of the draft. We've done reasonably well in the later rounds and with UDFAs. You just need to stay ahead of the curve ie the majority of the rest of the league in acquiring and keeping talent.

The league as a whole is going to hit on some of these picks of course. That's just probability. But some clubs are better than the majority of the league. And our dismal outcomes in the 4th are getting close to defying probabilities. Maybe we have been cursed in the 4th. :)
