I hate seeing guys go down on any team with career enders. Guys worked so hard to get where they are and its over that quick just a sad deal.

Feel bad for him, I kind of figured this would be the case after having 2nd neck injury.

Man, this is horrible news. That guy was giving his all out there too. One minute you're a football player and have some fame and the next minute you're back to the grind like the rest of us.

was he? from reports out of camp lately all theyve been saying is Rolando and Carter have been getting the snaps. Where u get this hollomon idea idk.

Broaddus said at some point in camp that Holloman was probably the best coverage LB. The best coverage LBs usually end up in the Nickel.

McClain was removed from the Nickel in Oakland because he would wear down in games playing 100% of the snaps. He's a big guy to be running all over the field playing a lot of coverage. Considering McClain's current conditioning issues, it might not be a good idea to plan on him playing 100% of the defensive snaps, especially at the beginning of the season.

It appears that they are just now moving players to the spots that they expect them to play going into the season (i.e. Durant to Will, Carter to Sam, Leary 1st team LG, etc..).

That has been the talk over a period of time now...with Holloman being on the field during packages. That is, as X stated, 61% of the plays.

With the injury of Ronaldo McClain, this is the current considerations:

...Kyle Wilber starting on the strong side appears to be the one thing that's settled for Dallas at linebacker. If McClain doesn't become a regular, Bruce Carter will probably keep his job on the weak side while Durant plays the middle.

Carter underperformed last year when the Cowboys thought a switch to the 4-3 defense would turn him into a playmaking star. He thrived filling in for Lee before getting hurt late in 2012, but his name didn't come up when Jones seemed to be listing the probable starters on his radio show by mentioning McClain, Durant and Wilber.

Carter's outlook could dim further if rookie fourth-round pick Anthony Hitchens shows any playmaking ability in the middle. The Cowboys drafted him higher than his projections as insurance for Lee, and already find themselves exploring that option.

''It's our job to create competition in practice throughout these preseason games to make sure we have the best group out there and give them plenty of opportunities to show they're part of it,'' Garrett said. ''And the other part of it is, too, you work the combinations.''

The Cowboys appear to have lost an option at middle linebacker in DeVonte Holloman, a second-year player who missed almost half of last season with a spinal problem and is out again with a neck injury.

Dallas sees McClain as the best fix for all the issues, which is why there's no rush to judge his commitment.

''He's big, he's fast, he's strong, he's physical, he's instinctive, he's a good tackler,'' Garrett said. ''Having said that, he hasn't played football in a couple years. We're balancing those things and trying to create an environment for him to somehow, someway be his best and show us what he can do.''

Now, the team could use another veteran with playing experiences.

I would be interested in Burnett.

That's unfortunate. I've seen a few people have to retire from the Army early because of injuries that would not allow them to continue. When you're young and have a dream ahead of you for where you want to be and go, it sucks to see something like this happen.

Hopefully he'll be able to still stay around the game, though, either as a coach or mentor, or something similar. By all estimations he's a great guy, loves his wife and daughter. Hopefully he's able to still contribute, even here in Dallas if they'll make a spot for him.

How does that work with a commitment? Is there a discharge or do they assign you to something with light duty?

Sure seems like there has been a spike in these career ending neck injuries in recent years.

I wonder if it is because the players are bigger / stronger / faster / etc and we are hitting the limits of what the human body can take OR modern medicine is getting better at identifying these players with narrowing of the spinal column etc.

Case in point the Packers lost two players to career ending neck injuries just last year in Jermichael Finley and their promising rookie RB in Jonathan Franklin. A couple of years before that they lost their All-Pro safety Nick Collins to career ending neck injury.

It was clear the team liked him, he played well at the end of last year. He also had an injury setback and didn't seem to be recovering well this year, but there was certainly buzz that Holloman could pick up where he left off.

Funny Broaddus was saying just yesterday on Talkin Cowboys that roland was getting the snaps and that he would be a nickle LB and that either Durant or Carter would be the other.

Right now the best scenario would be signing a veteran who knows the system, there is no time to bring players that are not familiar with it.

With the way the military is downsizing, most folks are getting medically retired. Basically you can either do the job you signed up for or you leave. During the height of the wars, they would make more of an effort to keep you around. I retired from the Army about 5 years ago and have a lot of friends retiring now and quite a bit are doing the medical retirement.

There were two others this year, with Holloman and David Wilson from the Giants.

I think the identification of stenosis definitely has improved, but I think that the biggest issue has been poor technique on the part of players due to the improvement in equipment. Players don't tackle correctly to protect the neck, and players being tackled need to do a better job in protecting themselves ahead of a hit. There likely is also some improvements that can be made with regards to conditioning and strengthening the neck muscles and associated areas.

No reports out of training camp this yr so far was that Hollomon had regressed. Clearly wasnt capitalizing on last yrs final game. But im sure that injury played a part in it.

Funny Broaddus was saying just yesterday on Talkin Cowboys that roland was getting the snaps and that he would be a nickle LB and that either Durant or Carter would be the other.

Broaddus also said that Patmon was the 1st string Nickel over Webb but forgot to tell us that Webb was injured.
