Report: Bills contact Mike Shanahan

Posted by Michael David Smith on November 18, 2009 3:35 PM ET

The Buffalo Bills have named defensive coordinator Perry Fewell the interim replacement for fired head coach **** Jauron. But they might be looking for a long-term replacement who will make a big splash.

Whos **** Jauron?

wouldn't it be minority hiring for anyone? a small minority of coaches would take head coaching jobs in Buffalo or Cleveland

Couldnt you sit in a chair and consider them without seeing them? Pretty much the same thing if your mind is made up? IM not arguing with you, just trying to find out more about this, because while I do not agree with the law of it, I do think an approach can be made for all lesser experienced coaches.

Its a pathetically stupid rule, and yeah, there are many interviews that I'm sure are totally bogus. Dennis Green has said it several times, and thats why he told the league there was no need for him to do a "face to face" interview with Jerry in 2003. Everyone knew Parcells was going to be the coach by then, so Jerry "interviewed" Green via phone and Green told the league he knew if something happened with Parcells and it didnt work out, that Jerry would definitely give him a "real" opportunity to interview.

But the rule, unless its been changed recently says nothing about when or what order you have to interview minority candidates, just that you must do it.

Thanx for the info, i had known it wasnt in order as well, but someone has to figure if you are looking at high end retreads, you might be considering them more, kind of like you go after the favorite person first.

I am sure they can say okay we';ll do interviews for the minorities, but *wink wink* its not going to happen.

I didnt know Green had said that and I find it true, he handled it better, but hes a classy guy in my book.

But thinking upon it, I guess both sides could point fingers, because everyone knew who Indy was making a HC and everyone seen Singletary as SF coach and I dont know how easy TB's coach had it, but i dont remember a string of coaches going through those doors.

Only reason I wanted Holmgren was to coach Romo up.

Only reason I wanted Shanahan was to make our running game even more dynamic.

Don't really like either guy. Cowher isn't coming here. Gruden isn't that good. Billick is meh.

Looks like we're stuck with Red Balls, and this team will perpetually give me blue balls. Metaphorically speaking of course.

If Holmgren becomes Czar in Cleveland, do you not think Gruden would get out of ESPN to rejoin Holmgren to coach his hometown team?

Somehow I just dont see Shanahan going to Buffalo, unless he basically has no other alternatives. They have revenue issues, a mediocre team with questions at QB and OL, a problem player in Lynch and also the TO thing, though he might be gone after this yr. I also doubt he'd make any decision before seeing what opportunities do come available in the offseason.

I dont think there any doubt that Zorn is done in Washington. Lovie Smith might be in trouble in Chicago. There's the Wade thing here thats clearly up in the air. John Fox may or may not be back in Carolina. Raheem the dream might make it only a year. In the AFC, obviously Buffalo will need a new HC. It will be interesting to see what happens with Jeff Fisher in Tennessee. Oakland will probably be looking again. Mangini definitely might be one and done in Cleveland, especially if Holmgren takes over as President/GM/Czar there.

totally agree, but i think shanahan best option is jacksonville or san diego, those teams are built better, kinda like after shanahan took over after wade left in buffalo, i think it took shanahan 2 years to get to the superbowl and tennessee might be an option too if fisher leaves. Carolina is still 2 years away wiht no proven QB because delhomme is done, chicago no great wrs yet, and getting old on defensive line.

Denver?

oh ok, i thought the rule was that you had to interview the minority coaches first, but really the nfl cant complain now, since there are some headcoaches in the nfl as minority; or whatever you want to say they are
lovie smith with chicago
steelers head coach tomlin
indys coach
tampa bays coach
cromwell was with cleveland for awhile, however you spell his name

Well if both those guys wind up picked up before this season is even over then it means either Phillips will get another year or two here or Jason Garrett just may get to take over.

I am in this for the long haul. Garrett as Head Coach... otherwise these past few years of grooming players and coaches has been a waste of time.

Please, someone sign Holmgren the Walrus and Shanahan the inspiration for HAL..... soon.

All we need now is for Jerry to resign Wade to a new 5 year deal for the trifecta of projectile vomit to be complete.

Bills haven’t asked for meeting with Shanahan

Posted: November 18th, 2009

Mike Shanahan is among several coaching candidates in whom the Bills have interest, but chief operating officer/general manager Russ Brandon has no meeting scheduled with him, league sources told NFL.com’s Vic Carucci.

Brandon is overseeing the search for a new coach after **** Jauron was fired Tuesday and replaced by defensive coordinator Perry Fewell on an interim basis. According to the sources, Brandon hasn’t requested a meeting with Shanahan, who won two Super Bowls with the Broncos but was fired after last season.
