It's really quite simple, just take Ellis completely out of the equation. This is essentially the case.(Should have been PUP'ed).

Who's the best man to back up the ILB? Carpenter.

Who's the best man to back up the OLB? Carpenter.

Burnett is in the same situation as Carpenter but on the right side. They have probably known this was coming for a long time but with Ellis whinning about drafting Spencer they had to make it look like they wanted Ellis to start (and probably did). But it ain't gonna happen.

We've got 2 more preseason games before it's for real and it's time to get this crap sorted out. Spencer is a rookie and there is no guarantee he can handle the job, but just in case we need Carp over there and ready.

Carpenter actually played some TE in goal line situations in college.

Every team needs a guy who is versatile...a jack of all trades, if you will. Yes, I had hoped that Carp would be starting opposite Ware this year but they drafted Spencer. Ok, cool. If Spencer doesn't pick it up soon (1 tackle in two games) we might be seeing more of Bobby.
