Is it better to be feared or loved? :D

I think in football feared goes further in the short term. One has to wonder if Jimmy would have lost the team by continually demanding more when they were giving 100%.

But the common denominator is having the talent that can execute your game plan. I'm continually derided for suggesting that Campo might have been a better head coach if Aikman wasn't on his last legs.

Yes.
But.... lol

His compliment was an assumption that lets get them now while they aren't that good yet. Surprise, Surprise!

Yes, it was. He was thinking "next year" for them being good. Somebody forgot to tell the Cowboys that next year was supposed to be the year they made noise. Funny thing is, there's a very good chance that they'll meet again next year with the way things are going right now. I expect Seattle to win their Division this year (along with the Cowboys). If that happens, I don't remember how they determine who the home team is. Anybody know?

Reminds me of "next years champions are here a year early"

Best record determines Home Field advantage. If both teams finish with an identical record the next step is head to head (which the Cowboys have already won).

OK. Thanks. I was totally off in my thinking (nothing new there).

I just think Campo was in waaaayyyy over his head. He did not have great talent, but those teams weren't smart and they weren't tough. I also don't think he helped correct the talent problem either. Maybe he didn't have a say. Hard to say if the Jones' let him play along in that area.

Parcells took a marginally talented team and won with them but unfortunately he did not the success in the draft that he was accustomed to. Phillips had better talent and I think got nothing out of them that wasn't already there. Garrett has been able to be more involved it seems and it appears that with the staff on board they are getting more out of what we have....the sum is better than the individual parts would suggest.

There has never been a coach in team history (sans the first years of Landry) that was more hog tied and handicapped than Dave Campo. He had very little say in the way of personnel, his team was woefully devoid of top tier talent and the team had no money to spend in FA due to HEAVY cap penalties for retiring players and short sighted contracts. I was never a huge fan of Campo but that dude was set up to fail from the word go.

You may be right. I know some of the players loved him but he just wasn't a very inspiring figure and I hated the techniques he taught in the secondary.

Never suggested Campo would have been a winner. Just stating sometimes head coaches are held hostage by talent that cannot consistently execute.

This was his best quote (about the 3rd and 20 play):

“It looked just like what happened at Houston. I didn’t see clearly how (Romo) escaped, but we saw how he beat one of the top players in football a week ago. He makes a great throw and catch and put them in the scoring zone and everything goes their way from there. I thought that was the same play, in a sense, in this game. It was that significant. We had played things well, we had rushed him and flushed him out, you know? Tony’s got magic about him. He always has. And he pulled it out right then and made an incredibly good play.”

In "Football Life" piece on Jimmy, he said the reason he wanted to leave the Cowboys when he did was that he got sick of being the "bad" guy. I think that can take a toll on anyone who isn't a real sadist.

Like you implied, I think using fear as the motivator could have negative impact on a professional team quickly. That stuff will work in college since you only have young players that will only play for the coach for about 4 years or so.

Funny quote by Aikman in the piece was Aikman thought it was odd Jimmy was getting sick of being the bad guy because he was so good at it.

Just listened to Pete Carroll interview on Sirius NFL Radio, and he was nothing but full of praise for Dallas. Paraphrasing here, of course, but he basically said that Dallas was a very good (with emphasis on "very") and very tough team. The host tried to give him an excuse for the loss by asking if in-game injuries affected the outcome. He stated that in no way did injuries change things. He stated that Dallas took them out of the way they normally play and that Dallas was able to stay with the way they normally play. He also said something about his players being taken out of their comfort zone. He also said that when TW made the 3rd and 20 catch, that it was all downhill for Dallas from there. It was a fun listen.

Meaning, it got easier?

It really did. It was the straw that broke the camel's back. They were already fighting an uphill battle against a team that was more physical than them and better prepared than them. The turnovers had kept them in the game and given them hope, but when they got Dallas into a 3rd and 20 and Dallas got it anyway, they just knew it wasn't their day.

And Dallas didn't get the first down because Seattle wasn't doing what it should... they got the first down because they made a fantastic play that nobody could stop.

It was a backbreaker for Seattle and their fans.

Then, the OL just mashed them in the run game and that was that. Lick your wounds and move on to next week.

A thing of beauty.

Great post.

Everything Carroll said is true, but keep in mind that he knows they might face Dallas again. He'd be foolish to give them bulletin board material. Steve Dennis said on The Break that Dallas doesn't want to face Seattle in the playoffs. IMO, Seattle doesn't want any part of us after being thrown around like rag dolls. It's kind of hard to game plan for that.
