I have to say OU has Stoops to thank for all of this. They are very fortunate to have him as its head coach.

R. Williams - No argument there

T. Harris - By most accounts, drafted WAY to high, undersized, injury prone and unproven rookie. Jury's still out.

Q. Griffin - If it wasn't for circumstances, he'd be a 2nd-tier RB on most NFL teams.

T. Casillas - WOW, Stoops MUST be a great coach if he can affect the career of a player he never even COACHED!!

D. Strait - Uhhh, refresh my memory, he's on WHAT NFL roster again??

R. Calmus - 44 solo tackles, 13 ast's, and 1 sack in two full seasons + 3 games... not exac stellar.

I have no vested interest in either the Texas or Oklahoma teams...so there is no bias when I speak of either.

However it would seem that Texas has been playing the role of the Commanders and Oklahoma has been playing the role of the Cowboys in the rivalry.

I just can not understand how Texas can have so much talent and yet seem to fall by the waste side vs oklahoma every year.

I can only come up with 3 possible conclusions.

1. Oklahoma has superior talent.

2. Oklahoma has superior Coaching.

3. Oklahoma just has the Longhorns number.

I know the skins at times have had better talent and better coaching yet Dallas was able to beat them...that is why I added the #3 option...but IMO both have pretty similar levels of talent (player wise)...so I think it just has to be the coaching.

It is a little like that BP. Only, unlike the Cowboys, Oklahoma doesn't lead the All-Time series. I will admit, however, it has been ugly as of late.

Really sad when the players of said state want to play somewhere else. That really does have to be a gut check. Speaks loads of the program and how its being handled in Austin.

Yeaaaaa, I'm sure it has NOTHING to do w/ sports being cyclical.

3 or more wins by either team over last 50+ years:

03 - 00 / OU

99 - 97 / UT

92 - 89 / UT

88 - 85 / OU

75 - 71 / OU

70 - 67 / UT

65 - 58 / UT

57 - 52 / OU

Yeaaaaa, my bad, it's coaching.

There is nothing sad about living in a state that has such an abundance of talent it can be spread out all over the country and still field very competive in state schools. It "is" sad that OU has been beating the crap out of UT lately. Hell, I'll admit it. I'm a fan until the end though. Win, lose or draw. Just like my Cowboys. :D

I never said anything about our DLine. Read it again, and this time pay attention. I said Derrick Johnson. You know...the best linebacker in the nation?

Tommie Harris was overrated. He never did anything other than crap a helmet on the cover of SI. Look up his stats.

I'm not making a "we will win" declaration. But I'm sick and tired of all the doom and gloom coming from Texas fans, and espcially the cocky *******s from north of the Red. Texas has a better chance this year than last year for sure. Running game, tight ends and an aggressive, pro-style D are what helps.

In the past, we couldn't run consistently. Sure, Benson would usually put up big numbers against the patsies, but would disappear in big games. Why? Because our OLine would get dominated. We had good size and strength up front, but until last year our blocking schemes were awful. We ran all these zone blocking plays. Last year we got a new OLine coach, and his smash mouth style has finally taken hold. We're #1 in the nation in rushing this year with 370 yds/game. Benson, for the first time, didn't play baseball this summer. He concentrated on football and getting stronger. He lost 10-15 lbs and has regained a lot of his mobility, balance and speed he once had. I know you'll say we've only played weak teams. Which is true, but take this into consideration. In 2002, under the old scheming, we played North Texas in the season opener and were held to only 27 yards rushing. This year against North Texas in the opener, we had 513 yards rushing. Just a slight difference.

You may notice our defense has been so-so, and isn't generating any sacks. You'd be right. You'd also be right if you said we've run the base D the entire season so far. Against UNT, we didn't respect their passing game. They had 2 good RBs, so we stuffed the box. Few blitzes = few sacks. Arkansas' Matt Jones is a beast to handle. He's tall, fast as hell, and strong. The D concentrated on contain all night. If we blitzed too aggressively, he'd go by us and be in the secondary. He's 6'5, 225 lbs or so and runs a 4.4. He's sickening. Rice is an old school wishbone team. They rarely pass. Our D concentrated on assignments and stopping the option. No real chance to blitz or mix up our coverages. Under our old scheme, we almost never ran zones. We'd be man-to-man, we'd walk our LBs up to the line of scrimmage (where they could get mauled by the OLine), and hope for the best. We're going to run a lot more zone this year, which will give us more looks to blitz out of. Our linebackers are no longer getting mugged at the LOS, so they're making more plays. Oh yeah...DJ will be blitzing a lot more this year. Best LB in the nation...we should use him right for once.

Maybe for the past few years but, just like Dallas does over Washington, Texas has control of the series against OU (sucks).

Dallas, on the other hand, I take his as a little more venomous, what w/ the derogatory references and all. But even that I just right that off to him being raised in OK, and even those that don't attend 1 of the big 2 Universities, are generally fiercely loyal to one of them.

From the Daily Oklahoman...

Asked if he saw a difference in this year's Longhorns, Arkansas coach Houston Nutt started naming names.

The first name he mentioned was senior Derrick Johnson, a heavy favorite to win this year's Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker.

Johnson has long been hyped, but other teams with stout linebackers -- including OU -- secretly have shrugged off his impact the previous three seasons.

Johnson has had a direct impact so far this season.

"They've got him in the right spot this year," Nutt said. "Last year, they had him inside at kind of a Mike (middle) linebacker. Now they've got him out there at Will (weakside) linebacker and, I mean, they can bring him off the edge, from behind. He's just so disruptive."

Arkansas beat Texas 38-28 last year in Austin and thoroughly dominated the Longhorns 27-6 in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 2000.

Did Nutt buy into the long-standing notion UT was soft and had no heart?

"I never told my guys that," Nutt said. "When we played them in 2000, our guys thought, 'Hey, they're not playing as physical as they could be.' Maybe it was because they didn't respect us or something. They just didn't seem as tough as others on our schedule we'd been playing.

"I'll tell you what, that's not the case this year. I think they're the real club, boy."

Rice has now lost 34 of its last 35 against Texas.

Asked if there was any improvement in the Longhorns' defense, Rice coach Ken Hatfield said, "Oh, I sensed a difference, all right. Where I sensed a difference was No. 11 (Johnson) on the field. He's as big a difference-maker in a ballgame as any I've ever seen.

My "homer ways" were just echoed by 2 coaches who absolutely hate Texas. Moreso than any land thief. Nutt played at Arky and was a part of the rivalry. Hatfield coached Arky as well back when the rivalry was strong. They have no reason to lie and say good things about Texas.

Apology my ***. Terra-cleptics can kiss my ***.

Now come on. We are all friends here. The OU/TEXAS thing goes way deep. It is my Oklahoma roots that come out when debating this back and forth. There is as much passion there as my beloved Cowboys.

I dont mean any disrespect to you as a person. I do hope you know that. Im not getting personal with anyone here that I can see. Its all school rivalry. As it SHOULD BE.

Don't worry, I don't take it personally. The "whoren" deal I do find a bit unnecessary, but trust me D, I spent 4 long years on the 40 acres, in the Texas spring sun, I know ALL about "rivalry"!!

Well let me say again...I have no vested interest in either team...therefore I do not know the long history of the rivalry.

However at this time it is plain to see that Oklahoma OWNS Texas and I have heard many say that it is the coaching that is the difference.

I have heard many Longhorn fans on the ticket claiming they need a new coach because Brown can't get the job done vs Oklahoma.

Cycles may indeed be the situation...but once again Do you think many people believe that the coaching (whether good or bad for either team) is the deciding factor?

IF....Stoops at the end of this season went to the Texas Universities front office to speak to the athletic director and said...I Know Mack is the coach but if you got rid of him I would like to be the head coach for your school starting next year....Do you think that the school would say no thanks or would they jump up and say hell yes welcome aboard... IMO they would be jumping for joy and welcoming him as the new coach.

Now take that same situation and say mack brown went to Oklahoma and said
I Know Stoops is the coach but if you got rid of him I would like to be the head coach for your school starting next year....Do you think that the school would say no thanks or would they jump up and say hell yes welcome aboard....I think they would say no thanks.

But those are just scenarios and opinions.
