Peterson's Not as Big as You'd Anticipate...

I'll ask you right now. If he was guaranteed to be the next Rod Woodson, is there anyone in this draft you would take ahead of him?

Yes. I would fix the OL and grab what we would need. I could understand the reasoning behind taking a player you think could be Rod Woodson but that's not what I would do. On every great Pittsburgh team, they have had an outstanding offensive line. I just believe that football starts there. If you don't have that, then you won't win. I would fix that first.

As I said earlier, I don't see the things I would need to see in his game to make me believe he's Woodson. At least, not yet.

I agree. Let's fix the O-Line this year since our losing record has given us the opportunity to finally draft higher than in the past. There will be quite a few good O-Lineman available....so, let's grab one or two (or more) stud OL's in the early rounds (especially if we trade down and get another 3rd RD pick). If we do, Romo may actually last an entire season for a change. Remember what happened to him in the playoffs against Minnesota (injured) and now again this year (injured). We need a couple of tough, mean, strong-as-an-ox, young linemen in this year's draft. With all the defensive lineman coming out this year (and other pressing needs at QB and other skill positions by many teams), we may get lucky and get us a (future) starting OT, OG, and Center. I will guarantee you that New England (with all their early draft picks) will be snatching up ALL of the young OL studs that they can get their hands on. We need to get our share early before the 'run on stud OL' by NFL GMs starts and Jerrah ends up DRAFTING another group of 2nd or 3rd tier OL's DUDS (instead of STUDS) as we have in the past.

I would if it's guaranteed.

You can't turn that down in this crapshoot.

You asked me one time to jab you if I ever saw a player I was as high on as I was Patrick Willis.

Jab.

I hear ya my friend... But just as I thought McFadden didn't have "it"...I get the same feeling about Peterson...He has a world of talent and measurables but there is something in his game that I can't put a finger on that makes me worry about this guy...its like... some kinda of disconnect of what is going on on the field and what is going on in his head...I realize that is a very vague explanation but I can't seem to find a way to put it any better than that.

Fair enough. I don't see what you see but that doesn't mean anything.

I will say this. I watched Deion at North Fort HS and then later at FSU. I don't see the natural ability in Peterson that I saw in Deion. To be honest, when I look at Peterson, I see more of the same kind of skills that I saw with Rod Woodson but not as good. At least, not from what I've seen. A lot of my reservations could be put aside if I just saw him with more explosion to the ball. Cutting weight from 220 to 205 or 210 could allow for that. If it does, then I'm all for it. I'm a big fan of CBs who can take away another teams top WR. I'll watch him closely and see if the weight improves his agility.

I hope it does my friend.

Whew...I am glad I am not the only one ABQ...cause Hos had me doubting my own eyes... but you are right about the lack of explosion but I think it has to do more with a disconnect in what he is seeing and what is actually happening...if that makes any sense to you

I think at our draft positions we could get very good OL in the 2nd and 3rd and maybe even the 4th rd

FS is the #1 priority- just nosing out RT.

And it just so happens that is a very weak class for top end FS...unless you are talking about drafting Peterson and having him play FS...but it seems like the boys like him at CB so that is moot.

Not arguing with you here, just making a point about this years crop of FS in the draft.

Cornerback.

I've been told he is the #1 guy on our board and we would move up to get him.

He is a top 5 player in this draft.
And that is at 6'1", 208 and a 4.4.

If he runs a 4.3 he goes top 3.

He is the top CB and DB and skill position player. He will go very, very early.

The only guy I'd draft over him is Fairley.

Jammer was 6 foot and 204 at a 4.42 and went 5th overall.
This makes me want him to run in the 4.4 -4.5 range so the teams ahead of us will sour on him and we can steal him. I am a big believer in his abilities and what he can do to get us to the next level.

Wow man. I don't know what else to say. I know there are no guarantees and I asked a hypothetical question but your answer just blows my mind.

I didn't pimp McFadden the way I did Willis and will Peterson. Pure football player who still has potential to grow as a player. How could I not be excited?

Well if we get him than I am gonna root for him like mad and if he is as good as you say than I will be glad we have him no doubt...but i just got a feeling that we might want to leave him alone...

You were 100% correct on Willis and I don't really remember were you came down on McFadden and I trust ya on what you are seeing in Peterson...still can't help what my eyes have seen though...yes he makes plays but when you watch he could have made many more...maybe what he lacks is coachable I really don't know.

As I said, I understand why somebody would support the view you suggest and I would not be terribly disappointed if that is what we elected to do. I can see the value if Peterson turns out to be a Rod Woodson type player. However, and you know this Hos, I am and have been a big supporter of drafting OL help in the higher rounds for a good 8 years. That's not the strategy we've adopted in the past but I still believe in it. Every year I see us taking skilled players, which is good, but always trying to get by with lessor talent on the OL. At least, that is what I see. I am a big believer in not just winning the LOS but dominating it. I believe that if you can win that battle, you can get buy with less then all world skill positions players.

I guess I just believe that until I see Peterson demonstrate the kinds of skills that lead me to believe he can be a once in a generation CB, it's hard for me to buy into him as a must have player. On the other hand, it's very easy for me to buy into taking some quality OLs, and I believe there are several in this draft, that could help us get to that LOS domination that we need to be able to bring in order to be successful. The way the draft sets up, I very much doubt that we can be in a position to get a Peterson without giving up a lot. On the other hand, I think this draft is setting up perfectly for us to grab several quality OLs and set ourselves up for the future.

I have know you long enough to understand that you believe in this player and you are not going to change your views on him. Heck, I wouldn't even want you to. I know you to be a very intelligent football minded person. You may, in fact, be correct. Peterson may be that once in a generation CB. I just don't see it. I'm pretty simple. I believe in winning the LOS and believe that this is our best chance to win championships.
