Taking devil's advocate here, just food for thought, but the "he's one in a long line of players who have said the same thing" brings up the question - why hasn't one or more of the "long line of players" put his foot down and tried to change the culture?
I remember Irvin saying after a game loss some players came up to him and said not to worry about it, their check would be there Tuesday (or whatever day they got paid).
The next year Irvin went to Jimmy and had a list of players that he felt didn't want to win badly enough and should be let go. And I know, he played for Jimmy so he had that relationship, but at some point, the players, who have to put the effort into winning, should have enough gumption to stand up and make the effort.
Not necessarily my view, but to place all the blame on the owner and coaches seems an easy way out....
