Al-Shaair is in line to get paid as a free agent after teammates
Fred Warner and
Dre Greenlaw find themselves among the 16 highest-paid off-ball linebackers in the NFL.
The 49ers applied the second-round restricted free agent tender — at a price tag of $3.986 million — to Al-Shaair for the 2022 season, perhaps illustrating that they feared he would get signed to an offer sheet elsewhere if they went with the right of first refusal tender.
Al-Shaair missed a lot of time in 2022 but earned a career-best 67.8 overall grade and 79.7 run-defense grade. It was his first season missing fewer than 10% of his tackle opportunities, and he put up an 86.8 overall grade with seven tackles and two defensive stops during a strong playoff run.
Contract Projection: Three years, $12 million ($4M per year); $6.25 million total guaranteed
Hernandez earned a career-high 79.1 pass-blocking grade in 2022, which ranked tied for eighth among guards. His 3.0% pressure rate allowed ranked 13th at the position, and he held up on true pass sets, as well, ranking top 15 in both metrics. He’s a bit more limited as a run blocker, failing to reach a season-long grade of at least 65.0 over his five-year career, but his above-average pass protection should make him an intriguing target for a handful of clubs.
Hernandez finished the season on injured reserve with a pectoral injury, but there are no indications he’ll miss time in 2023 as a result. The former No. 34 overall pick signed a minimum contract for 2022 but should be able to boost that a bit going forward.
Contract Projection: Three years, $25.5 million (8.5M per year); $15.5 million total guaranteed
Sutton quietly continued to excel in a Pittsburgh coverage unit that was otherwise very exploitable this season, with 2022 being just his second season as a full-time starter on the outside. Sutton signed a two-year, $9 million deal in 2021 that he outplayed in 2022, earning a 71.0 coverage grade and allowing just 411 receiving yards — the ninth fewest among cornerbacks with at least 400 coverage snaps on the season.
Sutton’s versatility as a defensive back who can still line up in the slot when called upon provides added value for interested teams, as well.
