A lot of things have quietly happened with the secondary that has them playing really well.

  1. The switch: Carr was flipped back over to the right side of the field which is where he excelled at KC and what got him the big contract with Dallas in the first place.
  2. Mo’ is finally healthy and comfortable.
  3. Safeties coach Greg Jackson has really gotten the safeties to see the field better. Barry Church is playing instinctively, Wilcox is improved and Jones is living up to his first round billing.
  4. Speaking of Jones, allowing him to play one spot has really helped his development. This kid always had the athleticism, intelligence, & maturity to play—I’m just glad it’s all coming together.
  5. Anthony Freaking Brown. I honestly would rather see Scandrick on the bench now because of this kid. Luckily this helps solve our CB FA needs next year.
Are they 4th best in the league? Too early to say. But they certainly are better than average which is probably the best we've had since '09.

During one of the post-game shows, Deion also commented that Mo's resurgence in his opinion is because he's playing left corner. He demonstrated that Mo has some sort of "hitch" when he begins his break, and it was difficult for him to play right corner because of this. On the left side, it plays to his strength due to the sideline being there.

Amazing if switching he and Carr made that big of a difference for both.

That's interesting. I hadn't noticed any hitch.

But the sideline definitely has an affect on you as both a receiver and DB.

It looks like Carr is for sure more comfortable back on the right. I've always felt Mo had a good enough skillset to play both sides, but maybe Deion sees more than I do. (Not unsurprisingly)

DB's seem to be getting their heads turned around to find the ball and playing it well too

This is also a contract year for several of them, and they're cognizant to play well, inspired, and motivated.

Even though I Really don't care what PFF ranks our secondary, there is no doubt they have improved tremendously. However, I do find it hilarious that there is not one mention in this thread about how flawed PFF rankings are, yet in OL PFF thread it is riddled with those types of comments.

How about that, boys! Here's to Mo, Byron, Brown, Church, Carr and the boys and their continued success!

4. Dallas Cowboys (30)
Current nickel package: CB Brandon Carr, CB Morris Claiborne, SCB Anthony Brown, S Byron P. Jones, S Barry Church

Dallas owned one of the worst secondaries in the league last season, but through six weeks, they have turned it around with largely the same cast. Byron Jones was the only player to earn an above-average grade in coverage last year; now, Jones has continued to play well, while Barry Church and Morris Claiborne currently own career-highs in terms of coverage grades, and Brandon Carr is right around his best grade since joining the Cowboys. It’s been a remarkable turnaround thus far, but we’ll see if Dallas can sustain this level of play for the rest of the season.
And Scandrick hasn't played...who leaves the field when he is ready?
Most would say Brown, but I'm not so sure. This kid has played amazing for a rookie period. Explosive. Wrap-up tackler. Excellent in Zone and Man. Honestly, had Claiborne played like this out of the gate, no one would have complained.

as shocked as I was that PFF gave the Commanders Oline the highest praise of last week's games, I am equally as shocked at this rating of our secondary. Our secondary has improved a lot since last year with not a whole lot of additions besides Brown, who is making a big difference, but I didn't see that coming when the season started.

You know one thing I was thinking about the defense is how much did Greg Hardy play with the emotion and the bad vibes. I was thinking last year basically the same thing has happened with injuries, Bryant hurt and out early for games and Romo hurt and out early. It seemed like the whole offense just shut down. Then we draft Dak with his talent and leadership has put the spark back into the offense. I feel, besides winning games of coarse, the biggest thing Dak has done for this team is when Romo went down he gave us confidence and calmness that we would win. He gave the offense the spark that usually Romo provides and the confidence that we can beat anyone. I wonder if Hardy's behavior and negativity took that spark away from the defense last year. And this year we are seeing the whole defense play better, especially the secondary. I wonder if Hardy's cancerous behaviors caused the defense to lose it's spark, lose it's mojo, lose the swagger.

I also think the defense plays off the offense and Dak's swagger and demeanor/confidence has trickled down throughout the whole team. It also helps that the defense is on the field for about half as many plays as last year.

I think all of it comes into play, but I think Hardy was a bigger downer then we realized. IMHO

If, big if, but if we get a healthy OScan back, we might climb higher than that number four position.

Two years ago he was playing at a mighty high level. What position he'd play now...who he'd replace...could be its own thread.

Hardy is now a wrestler or extreme fighter or some-such. The outlook for him isn't good...sounds like he's got psychiatric issues that he won't address.

The leadership in the locker room now is so much better and the team seems more united.

I don't know how many times Jerry has to be shown those kinds of players don't work out. He's sure seen it fail again and again.

I suspect all the players and coaches are enjoying themselves a lot more...and it shows on the field.

I thought about that as I made the post, Ro. Who would he replace, now? I believe the only thing holding us back from breaking the top 3 is an exterior rush attack.

Came to say all this. Don't forget Eberflus promoted to "passing defense coordinator", or whatever. Rob Ryan loved that dude. I think he's gotta be a future possible DC candidate. Soak up Rod's knowledge Matt.

Cowboys need to figure out if a trade is required before Oscan gets back because Brown needs to stay on the field. Glad Carr is playing well because he's the expendable one with some value

What the holy schmeckle happened to Carolina?!!?

Youngins on the outside, Norman was their life and energy before he left (for the DB unit).

It's hard to imagine that Norman is singlehandedly responsible for their defensive downfall, but it's known that he was a leader of sorts on that D last season, Bat.

Norman is a stud. They lost a top 5-7 CB

Also, love "schmeckle" used in your post :D

If they even had a best of 3 playoff format sure but with single game elimination NFL playoffs are too erratic to project that long.

If they had a best of 3 playoff system, the Patriots would be 16 time champions.
