How do you recall an e-mail message?
With Outlook...

Open the sent email.

Select "Action" option on top center of the opened email and select "Recall this message" option.

It doesn't always work but does work at times.

Theres pornography on the internet?

*GASP*

Seriously, there are viruses out there that send porn/spam out to all your address book and friend. And all you have to do is have an unpatched windows with no firewall. So what? Thanks PFT for the witch hunt.

Well, you have to be looking at the porn for it to infect your address book, don't you?

No not really. You can be surfing an infected website, your computer can be compromised by a 3rd party through windows vulnerabilities, or like someone said earlier your ISP/Mail Server can be infected. There are computers out there that just scan every IP Address 1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.2, etc for viruses/vulnerabilities and exploit them.

If the person admitted they sent porn and then apologized for it, I guess the "WOW! Sorry my computer has a virus" excuse wont cut it.

no, just open a virus. there are quite a few that will harvest your address book and send the mail out in your behalf. what i see as "possible" based on my knowledge is:

1. he did it accidently. how? it's possible w/autofill if the names are close and you're not paying attention. you start to type a name, outlook will offer suggestions from your book and you can ok it. if you're not paying attention you can "ok" the wrong name.

if this is the case he's still "guilty" of porn promo from his work office and that's usually a pretty bad "no no" in most workplaces NOT porn related.

2. virus. many viruses will send mail to everyone on your address list and they'll feed it "content" - in which case he never even knew it happened till it came back to him.

3. spoofing. if this is the case where ever he works needs to hire a consultant to secure their SMTP gateway and possibly the rest of their network.

4. and of course, maybe he did it for the hell of it. : )

IT'S TIME TO NAME NAMES

We've given this matter due consideration. We've pondered. We've deliberated. We've (thanks in advance, Tiki) excogitated.

And we've received more than 600 e-mails from readers in little more than two hours on the topic.

We've decided to disclose the names of the persons involved in the Friday e-mail fiasco.

Here's why. In announcing the new Personal Conduct Policy last month, the NFL pointed out that non-players would be held to an even higher standard than those who wear the uniform: "The standard of socially responsible conduct for NFL employees will be higher. Club and league employees will be held to a higher standard than players. Conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL will be subject to discipline, even if not criminal in nature." (Emphasis added.)

It's not for us to decide whether the underlying actions in this case (i.e., the forwarding of a "very hard-core," as one league source described it, pornographic video clip via a team's e-mail system) justifies punishment. But how will the personal conduct policy as applied to non-players have any meaning at all if the issue is ignored?

So in the interests of breaking from an apparent effort by the "real" media to brush this one under the rug in the hopes of scoring points with a new coaching regime, we believe it's fair and appropriate to disclose that (via at least three NFL sources) the e-mail in question was inadvertently sent to multiple high-level team employees and their secretaries by offensive line coach Larry Zierlein of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The e-mail message had been forwarded to him by Doug Whaley, the Steelers director of personnel. Whaley had received the video from someone outside of the organization, and Whaley forwarded it to multiple other persons, including Zierlein.

Again, it's not for us to decide whether this behavior runs afoul of the new personal conduct policy as applied to coaches and front office personnel. Assuming, however, that the NFL has a written policy regarding the use of company computer equipment for personal endeavors, the use of the steelers.com domain to forward the video in question surely was a violation.

There's also a strong strategic aspect at work here. As one source observed, if the ticket manager had done this, he'd already be out the door. With NFL-level offensive line coaches not readily available to be hired in late May, Zierlein will likely get a pass. Ditto for Whaley, a respected personnel exec and a key contributor to the success of the franchise over the past several years.

And we don't think it's a terminable offense, even though we're certain that other employers in other industries wouldn't think twice about firing someone for this.

With all that said, the case provides an excellent opportunity for the league to educate its employees as to what does (and what does not) amount to a violation of the revised conduct policy. If action is taken, then the conduct was over the line. If no action is taken, then this isn't the kind of stuff that falls within the scope of the murky standard of overall personal behavior.

This is such a non story, but what can you expect from a blog during the off season. It feels like PFT is extremely biased sometimes in the stories it chooses to publish and the opinions it takes on certain issues. The opinion falls if the editor likes or dislikes the team and less about the facts of the story.

There are so much other stories happening right now. Just over the weekend 3 NFL players were arrested and there are no punishments dispensed for them yet. What makes this accidental misclick such an outrageous incident?

Yeah me too. I was real curious about that. And honestly, I find it more humorous than anything else.

One of my biggest pet peeves at my job is some person who I've never met decides to send a "going away" email to ALL PERSONNEL.

I blame the Exchange(whatever flavor mail prog) admins.

You simply should not create mass emails to the point they can harass the entire company. Its not that hard to select a few departments if you need to hit multiple departments and thats a rare case.

Further most of the admins will leave the directory group as the first choice in the default send so that you could actually pretty easily make such a confounding mistake.

Most of the time I have seen these porn items forwarded they have been jokes not for the sake of spreading porn. Its completely inappropriate but probably not worth more than a giggle at the poor guy's expense.

Must have been damn good haha.

Seriously though Woody, do you know if it was sent by accident?

I have narrowed it down to a few coaches

Mike Tice
Mike Martz
Gregg Williams

They're all freaky like that IMO.

It's an overrated fundamental if you ask me frankly :p:

No seriously I am doing other stuff so I am rushing through the threads; I usually read them.

Thank you 5stars.
