If they refs inadvertently grant the TO it should be an unsportsmanlike penalty. Even the refs can get fooled. The natural reaction to seeing the TO signal is to blow the play dead.

What I don't understand is that with all the modern communications available today...

why isn't there a centralized group of refs off in a studio reviewing all the games in real time..

when there is a close call..let those guys have the final review if the game officials are unable to get it right or reach agreement.

..it shouldn't take any more time than we are already see with these long pauses of game play anyway.

There has to be a better way.

Unfortunately more business as usual in the NFL. It doesn't really matter if it's right or wrong as long as it's entertaining and gets people talking.

I don't know about you but when the officials make game changing errors that cost your team games and the league comes out apologizing for it days later it does make it all better.

It's kind of like the annual Jerry Jones "I know I've made mistakes" speech in January.

This is the kind of thing officials should be punished for
Officials are going to mis calls but when they blow the rules that they should know inside and out, that's what the nfl has to crack down on. There is no excuse for an official not knowing that a team had just called a timeout

They need to start by ousting the top "official" (Blandino). Do that and get someone in that office that has at least officiated a high school game...

I knew I'd had this feeling before.

Officiating was so bad that they signaled a seahawk TD when our QB's arm was going forward and the Refs ruled a fumble???
Low point in nfl officiating. Ever

What was worse is that they all stood around waiting for them to run it back. Like, if Dallas recovered the play would have been blown dead.

I don't know, was a kind of deer in headlights look from them.....................

It's a simple fix, but the NFL can't see it. If you call 2 consecutive TO's anytime, anywhere, for whatever reason, and irrregardless if the official grants it or not, it's a penalty. It's a simple penalty to enforce and it takes all judgement calls out of the penalty.

The NFL rulebook does not need to keep up with the US Tax Code.

This explanation sounds good, but it isn't accurate. The Cowboys were ready to snap the ball to kick the FG when the ref called timeout. The 12th Seattle player was still on the field at that time. It's all right there on the screen if you go back and watch it.
The flag is the dead giveaway.

"Then, as the Cowboys were preparing to line up for the field goal, the Seahawks realized that they had too many men on the field, and they called for a time out as players were trying to get to the sideline..."

"After consultation, it was determined that the Seahawks did not have 12 men in the formation because the snap of the ball was not imminent."

With Blindino what you watch is no all that relevant, apparently.

What's so sad is how much explaining the league has to do each week due to the complete cluelessness of the refs.

Right, and you have fans sitting at home watching on tv that know as soon as something happens its a penalty or should be, yet refs doing the game dont?

The fact that Blindino is top dog tells you all you need to know.

Someone posted the rule in the thread a few days ago. The way I read it it should've been a penalty regardless if they messed up or not because the snap was imminent. Which it clearly was.
Oh well, another "judgement" call goes against us.

They'll all even out. Right?

I agree with this. We have stats for just about every position. Why not have them for refs as well.

It is not for the refs to determine WHY a team calls a timeout.

Or to determine when they THINK a snap is going to happen.

Yet another rule that could easily be enforced based on objective criteria, but one that they choose to surround with guesswork and opinion. The NFL loves controversy, that's all there is to it. And creating a bunch of rules that are left open to interpretation is a great way to do so. It's also a great way to change the outcome of games without being subject to scrutiny. Think about the Dez ruling, all he has to say is that it didn't look like Dez had made a "football move," something that is not defined and is left completely up to Blandino to determine. Without this subjective (and completely pointless) portion built in, he would have no power to overturn calls. It looks incredibly suspicious and they only have themselves to blame. Or congratulate, depending on how you look at it.

I think they know it would take too long cause these bozos don't know their own rules and wouldn't be able make up their lame arse excuses fast enough.

It's against the rules to call back to back timeouts but then when you do there is no penalty. WTH is that? Can u imagine walking into a store and there is a big sign that says no shoplifting only to find out if you do ur just told its against store policy to do it. What a bunch of dumbarses lol

Exactly. What's next, the refs deciding that a hold isn't a holding penalty cuz the DE "probably wouldn't have got the sack anyway".

There was a game a few years back where a flag was thrown and the referee announced that there was "no penalty for holding because the player was attempting to hold, but didn't". Huh??? Does anyone else remember that?
