Tagging Osas will cost them more than he would get per year on a new deal and the entire tag number hits the CAP this year. I think Dallas would rather sign him to a 4 years deal that is CAP friendly the first year and gives them room for restructures in the future.

You're thinking like a fan and not an owner though...especially owners who prioritize money over winning championships. A franchise tag cost them $23ish million this year? I'm not sure what the exact tag numbers are, but I think that is close. A 4 year deal lets them push off the cap hits, but they will have to pay all of the guaranteed money from that contract right away, plus whatever they spend in FA with that saved cap money. In totality this could be the difference in Jerry/Stephen spending $23M this year vs closer to $100M in cash.

What’s wrong with desperately trying to be pretty bad to avoid being extremely bad? I would much rather be picking 8-12 than 1-5. Think of the jersey sales and people you can call haters that disagree!

Diarrhea is the body’s natural reaction to having toxic stuff in the guts. It’s better to take something that prolongs the activity of toxic stuff than just pooping it out and getting it over with.

I agree. And I'd assume the best deal length would be a 5 year deal, but with void deals becoming common place since 2020, I'd assume a 4+1/2 voids is good enough.
 
This is probably a direct result of Mazi not being what they thought he would be and maybe not being confident in drafting a DT. Let's just hope the FO doesn't overpay Osa cause I'd rather them get the compensatory picks then overpay.

The tag number for a DT according to Sportrac is close to $25 million. That means a 2025 $25 million CAP hit assuming they do not sign him at some point. If they can sign him for $21 million, which would probably be mostly signing bonus the first year, they would be giving up a lot less CAP, and if they really want him the tag only gets him for 1 year and then they have to pay him next year when the cost will likely go up. If I was going to pay him $21 million I would try to sign Milton Williams for just a bit more. Williams will be a much better player I think.
 
I agree that the news isn't anything to get excited about. We are talking about resigning guys that haven't got it done for in the past. Why should we expect them to get it done next year.

Osa vs Milton Williams...I'd spend the money on Williams. But a cheap alternative at DT is Poona Ford. His overall grade in PFF, is 85.1, pass is 71.7, and run is 78.8. Osa's were 68.1, 78.5, 50.8. Osa only gives you a bit better pass rush, but is a liability in the run. Poona in a rotation with a young DT is better than paying Osa to be a pass rusher and a poor run defender.

Dowdle should maybe be resigned on a low deal making 3-4m a year, but he is only a running back by committee type. He is not anything more than that, and we definitely should be looking at a RB high in the draft....first 3 rounds probably. There are a number of average RBs out there in FA....just find the one that will take the cheap deal and pair them with a young guy.

I really don't have a problem with resigning Lewis, he should have value but the injuries and age will scare teams off from paying top dollar. Same with Tank, if he wants to sign an incentive laced deal maybe, but he should not get significant money guaranteed. I would re up Golston and let Tank walk. Tank is near the end, while Golston could be on the way up.
 
This is such a Cowboys thing to do. Over pay for our own, average DT and RB when the draft is FULL of both and several solid, probably lower-priced FAs across the league.

Indy traded a first for Buckner despite Denico Autry putting up 12 sacks the previous 2 seasons and having another year on his contract so there’s still a chance. Think that chance drops dramatically and they’ll probably start looking again around the 3rd!

And if Jerry/stephen are serious about spending money in FA this offseason then I think you’re right.

My concern has a lot more to do with cash spend, not cap space. A multi year extension probably costs them $60m (from guaranteed money) in cash this year plus whatever they would spend on in free agency from the cap savings by locking up OSA. If they plan on extending Micah as well you might be getting into more cash spend than Jerry wants to do in one season. This was the issue last year with two larger contracts in Lamb/Prescott.

Locking up OSA is a cap friendly move for 2025, but it’s significantly more expensive for Jerry’s pocket.

Definitely agree on Osa. Really would rather they bypass re-signing him as the amount he'll ask for.
Lewis could be had back at a decent price and he's one of the few who actually comes to play and have some dog in him vs others.
Dowdle, good story, but I don't see him as a game changer that needs to be retained for that amount. He was finally healthy one year and did good, but same type of rb can be had in bargain basement FA imo.

Osa run grade was 80 the year prior when he had an actual 1tech (Hankins) playing next to him. Ford is a drastically undersized 1tech!
 
Osa - at a decent price, but not $20 million per season
Rico - $5 million tops, and that may be too much. He made it through last year, so hopefully that injury bug is behind him
Lewis - YES, and he wants to be here
Lawrence - Time to move on, too injury prone

They have a chance to draft a few players to replaces theses guys. Lewis wants to stay here. He may really give them a home town discount.

Need to draft a RB regardless if Rico stays.

What will happen.
Overpay Osa, as posted above, DT in the draft and FA, on back burner
Overpay Rico, thinking he is Zeke in his rookie year, RB on back burner
Overpay Lawrence, then he goes on IR wishing 3 weeks, DE on back burner

We will get reaches in the draft and be told they got great value. But at what positions, and can they contribute.
 
If you really want improvement on the Dline this season, resigning Osa is probably a must. If you let him walk, drafting a DT and signing a mid to bottom DT is not going to move the needle....your just spinning your tires at that point.

They could legit sign Javon Kinlaw, Poona Ford and Demarcus Walker for less than Osa. You get better productions at the 1T and 3T
