PFT: Dak Prescott, I trust my agent, Cowboys to get an extension done

Resigning Dak could work if it were a reasonable contract that allowed them to fund a kick-arse defense and running game. He's not the worst QB in the league but he definitely chokes when asked to beat better teams with his arm. The key to that, though, is that they start looking for the next QB now. The organization failed when they paid him so much AND they quit looking for an upgrade.

No extension until after the upcoming season. Earn it!
They dont really have a choice my friend. When they restructured him they made it impossible to NOT extend him. I think he will count like 50 million plus against the cap next year without an extension.

reasonable out? Next year his cap hit is astronomical
But as a designated June 1 cut or trade you can split that cap hit up over a couple years. He would only count about $25M against the cap next year in this scenario. June 1 scenarios are not always the best, but the Cowboys would have options worst case.

The piece that they absolutely can't do is keep Dak and not extend him. I think either 2023 is his last season as a Cowboy or he's here for the next half decade. Hard to picture anything in between.

It looks like according to Spotrac, they’ll still have $13 million in cap space, even with his $60 million cap hit.

I’m not doing anything with his deal until he proves he’s worth it.

Give that man an extension ASAP Jerry!!!:banghead:
This will guarantee you will go to the man in the sky without another SB trophy!!!
P.S. After all those SB wins and championship games he should be the highest-paid QB in the NFL!!!!!

Here is a sample of the glory that will continue to lead us, baby!!

Jerry doesn't care as long as he sells tickets.
He got lucky with Jimmy Johnson in the beginning, but since then he has been a circus ringleader who hypes the acts and sells tickets.
The circus in Dallas is strong.

I'm in the camp of no extension...play this year and then make a decision...not ready to move on just yet but not ready to sign up for another 4 years
Almost exactly what I was going to say. Don't panic. If Dak has another season like the previous, it's REALLY time to move on. They can't be scared.

They will be asking too much and it won’t happen till after this season. If he has a good year it will be more. Don’t he count for a huge amount on the cap this season. Must be why they want the extension now. Anyone hear what his agent is asking now.

Yeah. I just don't see that as an "easy" out. Semantics maybe, but huge dead money even if split up.

Agreed, and maybe easy is the wrong word. It's still a chunk of change that has to be factored into the equation, but any other player who's cap hit could be cut by more than half via cut would be viewed as a potential cap casualty....except Dak.

IMO extending Dak really doesn't fix the problem, unless he's an improve QB under MM & Schottenheimer in the new offense. The Cowboys just continue to push the bill to a new year, and every year that bill gets more and more expensive.

I completely trust the Jones boys to completely cave into all his demands
A couple months ago I would have agreed with this fully. The fact that they restructured instead of extended his contract tells me that the Cowboys at least initially are not caving to Daks demands. Really this offseason was a perfect opportunity to come to a fair agreement for both sides. Now it really starts to feel to me that it's all in Daks hands. An improved 2023 season probably lets him command top dollar and becomes the highest AAV player once again. A disappointing 2023 may push Jerry/Stephen to get creative at the position.

agreed. it's just a terrible position to be in unless he dramatically improves. I guess they *could* go the hurts route and backload it to hell w/ the though you have 3-4 years of this core w/ dak and some cap relief before just eating a massive bill win, lose or draw.

Here is where my contract knowledge starts to get limited. Can the Cowboys do as heavy of a backloaded deal as Hurts has and still reap the benefits? Does the voidable money in Dak's existing deal just go away with a new contract? Or is that $25M in 2025 counting against the cap either way and still going to be an issue with the Cowboys adding players that season?
