GARRETT’S ASCENSION IN JEOPARDY?
Posted by Mike Florio on December 14, 2008, 11:20 a.m.
It has been presumed ever since Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett decided to stay in Dallas as a highly-paid assistant that Garrett will take over the team once Wade Phillips leaves, voluntarily or otherwise.
But with the franchise coming apart at the seams due to disgruntled offensive players, Garrett’s ascension to the top job seems to be hardly a lock.
We’ve been saying for weeks that, if the Cowboys don’t make the playoffs, owner Jerry Jones might choose to send Garrett packing with Phillips, given Garrett’s inability or unwillingness to fill the leadership void created by Wade’s hands-off coaching style.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that, indeed, other teams are now monitoring Garrett’s handling of the current turmoil in the Cowboys’ locker room. With no leadership coming from the head coach, Garrett needs to show that he can control his side of the ball.
In many respects, Garrett’s future hinges on his ability to come up with a successful game plan on Sunday night. As we pointed out on Friday in an item for SportingNews.com (and in each of an unofficial PFT record 12 radio spots), Garrett likely has found himself caught between strong evidence from last week’s Eagles-Giants game that the defending Super Bowl champs can be beaten with a heavy dose of run plays and shrill voices of receivers who want the ball.
Can Garrett ignore the distractions and devise a plan that will help the Cowboys outscore the Giants? And can he get all members of the offense to buy in to his approach?
The answer to those questions could keep Garrett from becoming the next head coach of the Cowboys, and of any other NFL team.
