GARRETT’S ASCENSION IN JEOPARDY?

Posted by Mike Florio on December 14, 2008, 11:20 a.m.
It has been presumed ever since Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett decided to stay in Dallas as a highly-paid assistant that Garrett will take over the team once Wade Phillips leaves, voluntarily or otherwise.
But with the franchise coming apart at the seams due to disgruntled offensive players, Garrett’s ascension to the top job seems to be hardly a lock.
We’ve been saying for weeks that, if the Cowboys don’t make the playoffs, owner Jerry Jones might choose to send Garrett packing with Phillips, given Garrett’s inability or unwillingness to fill the leadership void created by Wade’s hands-off coaching style.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that, indeed, other teams are now monitoring Garrett’s handling of the current turmoil in the Cowboys’ locker room. With no leadership coming from the head coach, Garrett needs to show that he can control his side of the ball.
In many respects, Garrett’s future hinges on his ability to come up with a successful game plan on Sunday night. As we pointed out on Friday in an item for SportingNews.com (and in each of an unofficial PFT record 12 radio spots), Garrett likely has found himself caught between strong evidence from last week’s Eagles-Giants game that the defending Super Bowl champs can be beaten with a heavy dose of run plays and shrill voices of receivers who want the ball.
Can Garrett ignore the distractions and devise a plan that will help the Cowboys outscore the Giants? And can he get all members of the offense to buy in to his approach?
The answer to those questions could keep Garrett from becoming the next head coach of the Cowboys, and of any other NFL team.

Even though Florio is full of crap, I am all for the media finally putting the pressure on Garrett. This guy has gotten a free-pass far too long....

Well we know Wade can control his side of the ball, just not the entire team...

Fox pre-game crowd thinks Wade keeps his job.
Yep, that surprised me given how he's always bashing Wade.

And Jimmy flatly said that Garrett's not ready yet.

I think Wade should stay and Garrett needs to go!

I think he keeps it, too. No matter what happens. Too many injuries this year and an incompetent backup QB. The defense appears to be rolling despite all the injuries.

31 or 32 teams each year fall short of their goals.

Garrett's leadership of the offense has certainly been called into question with one debacle after another this year:

Brad Johnson at backup QB
Going into the season with Proctor as first backup at C/OG
How long it took Holland to get ready (really more on Houck/Holland)
The lack of use of Choice/Felix when they are both great rookies
The underuse of Bennett
The underuse of Roy Williams
Resentment (allegedly) developing between TO and Romo/Witten

He may have a great football mind, but he is not yet a great leader so he is not ready for HC yet.

Good.

Not only is he not a capable head coaching candidate he's not a qualified or capable offensive coordinator.

He should hit the road.

It is way too early to consider canning him. Great organizations have consistent offensive and defensive philosophies that allow for continuity. The more experience players have in the system, the more it will become second nature and the better they will play.

I do agree that he has had some shortcomings this year and hopefully he will learn from his mistakes and be better nextyear.

Anyhow, this year isn't done yet - he will get major kudos from me if he can hide Proctor in this game.

Got to agree, Garrett should take the blame as much as the players.

What offensive coaches will be available next season?

He has a great football mind? How so? Because he went to Princeton... Since when has Princeton been a great football school?

Which is all the more reason to can Garrett... This offense lack continuity in a game, let alone a season... It doesn't have a systematic approach to attacking a defense...

Many who know football give him kudos for his football IQ and he used it as an athletically limited backup QB to his advantage. I do think he is smart but he needs to learn the people side of the coaching business a bit more. He let himself get too close to some players and that has hurt his decision-making. He also puts too much value on experience over ability. Lastly, he has been a bit thick-headed on not adjusting his offense enough to account for injuries - nothing could be done when Romo was down because BJ is incompetent, but he should have found a way to minimize Proctor's impact on the game by now.

Be careful what you wish for. The offense is still one of the best in the league. If people are going to give Wade a pass because of injuries on the team, then you need to do the same for Garrett. He does need to improve his play calling by diversifying it no doubt and I have faith that he can. Still with all the problems that have had this year, we still are one of the best teams on offense. Don't be so hasty yet.
