He must have been flying to have a light pole do that much damage.

He was an awesome football player at LSU. I'll never forget his goalline stand series against Mississippi State.

Reminds me a little of Big E's accident a long time ago. I'm glad Big E was ok. If I remember correctly, the pictures of the car were pretty bad.

That's too bad for Chad Jones. In a flash, his whole life just changed. His dream life just turned into a horrible nightmare. However, it appears at this time he has no one to blame but himself.

Man that is bad news. As a poster above said , he must have been really movin' to have all that damage on a city street. Thank God he signed his contract. He should be set for life if he gets a good investment guy to work with .... like me. :)

Chad Jones alert after accident, still in surgery

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on June 25, 2010 2:58 PM ET

The most serious injuries to Giants safety Chad Jones after his devastating car crash on Friday were to his left ankle and leg, WDSU in New Orleans reports.

The injuries are reportedly career-threatening, but not life-threatening. Amputation remains an option. (PFT reported earlier doctors were trying to save Jones' leg.) Juan Kincaid of WWL-TV writes that Jones shattered his tibia and fibula and suffered severe lacerations to his thigh. Jones remains in surgery, where he's been for more than three hours.

Two passengers were in Jones' vehicle at the time of the accident, and remarkably only suffered minor injuries. They were not taken to the hospital.

It reportedly took 20 minutes, on the other hand, to extricate Jones from his mangled car. Jones' father, a New Orleans school principal Al Jones, said that his son was alert after the accident.

"My understanding is that he was awake and he actually gave my cell phone to the police officer who was talking to him," Jones told the Baton Rouge Advocate.

New Orleans police also revealed they charged Jones with "careless operation of a vehicle." The police also said they would be looking at toxicology reports.

UPDATE: Jones is expected to be in surgery for the next few hours, according to Newsday.

I'm a Duke fan and this reminds me of the Jay Williams tragedy.

Hope you make a full recovery Chad!

Wow!

Horrible news.

What is it with Safeties and the NFC East?

First the Eagles lose one for the season and now the Giants possibly lose another one for good.

Absolutely horrible accident. Best wishes to him and his family. Not to sound like an ***, but I'm really glad he already signed his rookie contract.

Cowboys Had Their Eye On Chad Jones
Posted by jellis at 6/25/2010 5:06 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

We've been following a pretty concerning story emerging from New Orleans on Friday morning, the car accident and career-threatening injuries sustained by Giants rookie safety Chad Jones.

Jones was transported to LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans following the dawn crash. He underwent surgery for a shattered tibia and fibula. It's believed he will keep both legs, according to an NFL.com report, but his football future is in serious doubt.

An LSU product, Jones was New York's third-round pick in the April draft. He signed a four-year contract with the Giants on June 11.

Jones was one of a few safeties the Cowboys invited to visit Valley Ranch in the spring. The team had a third-round grade on the former college national champion in football and baseball.

His signing bonus was $825,000. Take away around 40 some percent for taxes and he's left with $500,000. Not a whole lot. The Giants aren't going to pay his salary which probably isn't guaranteed.

Does he have health care? If not, he's royally screwed. That bonus money is already gone. Does his healthcare provided by the Giants begin with the start of training camp?

And you have to look at the fine print in the contract. He will be charged with reckless driving. Was alcohol involved? That may trigger repayment of the bonus if the Giants so opt.

Depressing but true.

poor guy...hate to see something like this.

Must have been going VERY fast. Hopefully he plays football again, but more importantly lets hope he keeps his leg.

How much money does he get from the contract? If worst comes to worse he could play baseball again...I also heard he's pretty intelligent so he could always go back and get his degree...look on the bright side.

Get better, Chad.

From a marketing/PR standpoint do you really wanna stiff the guy when it comes to healthcare? IMO if I'm the Giants I help the guy recover and try to cover all his hospital costs, it's chump change to a large organization like that, and if he can still play afterwards then great if not you part ways and let him keep whatever you can bear to let him keep. Sure I won't give him his entire contract worth but at least something to hold him over. Hopefully if he can't play football he can at least go back to LSU and finish his senior year to get his degree.

He signed a 4 year $2.616 million contract. $825,965 signing bonus (he'll get to keep that for sure). Slated to make in 2010: $320k, 2011: $405k, 2012: $490k, 2013: $575k (none of which is guaranteed to my knowledge) If I were the Giants and he wasn't gonna be able to play ever again I'd give him the $320k he was going to get in 2010 and part ways.
