Agent says Chad Jones could opt for baseball over football per PFT
Posted by Mike Florio on June 28, 2010 8:59 AM ET
The dire news that came out of Friday's automobile accident involving Giants rookie safety Chad Jones has yielded to optimism, with doctors not only saving Jones' badly-injured leg but also giving his family and agent cause to believe that Jones will walk again and, eventually, run.

But it doesn't mean that Jones ever will play football again. Per Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, agent Rocky Arceneaux says that Jones has not ruled out ditching football for baseball, since baseball would result in less stress on the leg.

It makes sense, but Arceneaux would be wise to be a bit more coy at this point. The Giants have yet to publicly commit to paying Jones his $320,000 while he presumably spends the entire 2010 season on the non-football injury/illness list. If Jones eventually could play football but chooses not to do so, he could be required to pay back all or part of his $848,000 signing bonus.

It's possible that Jones, a pitcher and outfielder on LSU's College World Series-winning team, ultimately could be medically cleared to play baseball but not football, given the fundamental differences between the sports. Arceneaux should using terms like that if he sees fit to talk about Jones possibly playing baseball instead of football.

Even better, Arceneaux should be saying nothing at all about the difficult choice that Jones may eventually have to make.

He might want to think about getting a new agent. The gspots are notoriously shrewd and cheap. Let the kid heal and get paid, shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Saying he MIGHT play baseball......just stupid.

Giants safety Chad Jones 'in good spirits' »
BY RALPH VACCHIANO

Chad Jones, the Giants rookie safety who fractured his left leg in a single-car crash Friday morning, is alert and resting comfortably as he remains at LSU’s public hospital.

“He’s in good spirits,” Al Jones, Sr. said on Monday in a statement released on LSU’s web site. “His leg and foot are looking better. This is going to be a long process but everything is positive right now. We are just beginning the healing process.”

Jones, 21, has been surrounded by friends, family, former teammates and Giants personnel since losing control of his 2010 Range Rover while maneuvering over streetcar tracks early Friday morning. He was extricated by firefighters and rescue division workers, and wheeled to an ambulance on a stretcher. Two passengers inside the car were also injured, but neither was taken to the hospital.

“Chad wants everyone to know how much he appreciates the thoughts and the prayers,” Al Jones, Sr. said. “They are making a difference. It really means so much to him to have the support of the LSU fans and the entire community. The phone calls, e-mails and text messages have really helped lift his spirits.”

Goodell calls Chad Jones

On Monday night, Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPNNewYork.com spoke with Giants rookie Chad Jones' father, Al, by phone.

"Chad wishes he could tell everybody how wonderful the messages make him feel with the calls and the texts," Al Jones, the rookie's father, told Youngmisuk. "Even Mr. Goodell gave him a call and wished him well and a speedy recovery."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and his staff have been in constant contact with Jones and his family since the player's car accident Friday morning. Jones faces a long road to recovery, but it sounds like he has an amazing attitude right now.

Asked if his son has thought of returning to the field, Al said, "Yes of course, that is his attitude and what he thinks about. When you spend as much time with him as we have, that conversation is going to be natural. It popped up. That is on his mind and his motivation and he wants to be able to get back into action and being his old self. He already knows that it is going to be a long time. So of course he is talking about it."

There's been some talk that Jones might consider baseball as an alternative, but for now, his focus remains on attempting to make a full recovery so that he can play for the Giants.

Giants rookie safety Chad Jones, who was seriously injured in a car accident Friday, is being transferred to a New York hospital today, according to the club. Jones underwent eight hours of surgery at LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans following the accident. The Giants have arranged to have him transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Jones will be accompanied on the flight by his girlfriend, Jade Newman. He'll undergo plastic surgery in New York and possibly additional orthopedic procedures, according to the Giants.
"Chad has received outstanding medical care from the doctors and nurses in New Orleans since his accident. They've shown great compassion," said Giants vice president of medical services Ronnie Barnes in a statement this morning. "After consulting with our doctors, Chad's doctors at LSU and his family, [we] felt like this move to New York was the next logical step in his care and recovery."
Barnes also noted that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has offered to provide hotel accommodations for Jones' family members while they're in New York.
