PFT: Ireland doesn't have "Final Say?"... Fins willing to move #1 pick

Funny part is when I said this same thing before Ireland left I was slammed for saying it and told well Ireland is happy. I'm glad Ireland is happy but if this is not on the up and up then Dallas can and should be compensated and Jerry said as much when Ireland was hired by Miami. I don't think this is the end of the story by a long shot. Jerry is not going to have the wool pulled over his eyes not if he can do something to benefit his team

We had the #22 last year and this year... I'm guessing that's why that number popped into his head.

Can Dallas get something out of this? Because this essentially qualifies as tampering, does it not?

Dallas should get compensation...

It seems funny to me that BP is all of a sudden allowing his staff, coaches etc. speak about the internal operations of his squad.

When head coach at Dallas wasn't everyone not name Jerry Jones supposed to be quiet with the media?

The problem with trading into top spot is that, as the price tag for signing the top pick continues to spiral north, the notion of giving up 3,000 points in trade-chart value for the privilege to pay an unproven player $35 million in guaranteed money isn’t very appealing.

I really wish the league would look into that. Unproven players are making more than some pro bowl players. Where is the logic in that?

Wow Bill wanting to control everything what a shock. Everybody knew Ireland was just going to be a glorified scout when he went there so can't say its a surprise.

I still say Jerry should've got some comepnsation, but i guess the whole Garret thing had to be taken into consideration.

IRELAND DOESN’T HAVE “FINAL SAY”?

Posted by Mike Florio on January 24, 2008, 9:14 a.m.

The Miami Dolphins were able to finagle their new G.M., Jeff Ireland, from the Cowboys because new V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells doesn’t have “final say” over personnel.

The Dolphins were careful to include language to that effect in Parcells’ contract, and likewise (we presume) included appropriate words and phrases in Ireland’s paperwork to vest him with the authority to determine who will and won’t play football for the team.

The only problem? There’s an apparent disconnect between the writing and the reality.

On Wednesday, Ireland essentially admitted that he’s not running the show. He admitted it.

“The situation that we’re in is that Bill does oversee everything,” Ireland said. “But yet I am the G.M. and we have a head coach, so there is going to be a triangle of communication involved here.

“I can’t say that Bill will have the final say on everything, because we communicate so well. That’s why Tony’s in the position that he’s in and that’s why Bill brought me here — because we’ll communicate and make decisions together.”

Though Ireland doesn’t come out and say “I don’t have final say,” it’s strongly implied that he doesn’t. Especially when he says, “I can’t say that Bill will have final say on everything.”

It’s a startling revelation, made even more surprising by the fact that Parcells is the dean of the “keep your f–king mouth shut” approach to pro football.
So if the Dolphins are going to apply Parcells’ patented “one voice” approach, the “one voice” probably shouldn’t be Ireland’s. Unless and until he learns how to use it.

It remains to be seen what the fallout will be. In theory, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones could ask the league to investigate the situation, and to compel the Dolphins to compensate the Cowboys with draft picks if it’s determined that Ireland truly doesn’t have final say. But to make that claim Jones would have to implicitly acknowledge that he’d been hoodwinked by Parcells, and not everyone has an ego that permits such a concession.

Frankly, we’re a little troubled by the manner in which Parcells has done business since heading to Miami. Though the opinions expressed below aren’t necessarily the opinions of PFT, we think that the reader who sent in the following e-mail on Wednesday makes some important points:

“An average fan here who is curious about the underhanded tactics that Bill Parcells continues to get away with.

“Let’s be honest, Tony Sparano was offered the head coaching job in Miami before league rules permitted, is there any question about that? . . . Then there are the assistants, who turned down extensions from the Cowboys to ‘test the open waters’? Please. Can the league really believe that Sparano didn’t reach out and offer jobs to [Todd] Bowles, [Paul] Pasqualoni, and [Kacy] Rodgers BEFORE their contracts expired this Sunday? And did Sparano recruit these assistants while still employed by Jerry Jones, under the orders of Bill Parcells? Of course he did.

“Mrs. Doubtfire has a long history of these unscrupulous tactics and clear violations of league policies. How does he get away with it?”

Hey, that e-mail was worth the price of admission solely for the Mrs. Doubtfire reference. Priceless.

Thanks for the post!

Frankly, I'm over Ireland leaving. We've got a Super Bowl run to get ready for next year. Basically, Ireland went from a winning situation where someone else had "final say" to a losing situation where someone else has "final say". Classic...:lmao2: Seriously though, thank you Jeff for helping us get back to a winning organization. Good luck in M-I-A-O.....

Sweet, fuel to the fire about us trading up for McFadden. Should be a fun off-season!:)

No GM has final say every GM reports to 1-2 more people on every team

GM's report to owners and some owners have a say into things. McKay moved up in the ATL front office from GM and Hired a new GM from the Patriots you think Rich is not going to have say still :banghead::banghead::banghead:

If there are any trades between Dallas and Miami, there could be a bit of sweetening to make up for Dallas letting Parcells have his way so easilly.

But I am pretty sure the Jerry knew which way the wind blew when he let Ireland go. But it will be fun to watch the comparison between Miami's and Dallas's draft evaluations for the next couple of years.

So what is the trade.. Dallas' 1's, 2's this year and next and 4 for #1? The problem here is that I don't think Jerry will give up a future #1 and I think Bill and Ireland will want one.

Both parties know the value of that extra #1. The Patriots have been parlaying them for years. I thought that was the biggest hit to them losing their #1, but they will probably turn the 9ers pick into 2 more again..

In the days before FA, drafting #1 overall made sense, but these days because of the vastly increased compensation, it has become high risk and many people would rather trade down and expose their team to less financial risk.

Personally, in the absense of any really great player with a great attitude, I would rather trade down or even pass if a trading partner were not available and let somebody else take the risk.

Just me.

Wishful thinking is good.

I'd faint again if we got any compensation at all or is Miami got even a wrist slap.

Totally agree. That draft value chart was made before these crazy contracts for top picks, so I think the chart is not very useful anymore, at least for the first 10 picks or so.

Whats BS is we gave them Ireland knowing they would do this when we didn't have to and they still signed 3 of our defensive coaches.

I don't think that bothered Jones because it doesn't seem that he tried that hard to keep them.

But I do wonder if he's upset with Parcells and Ireland for "taking" Brian Gaine considering that he didn't press this issue.

The comments from Jones before Gaine wanted out were that he didn't expect anyone else (under contract) to be leaving and the team was in good shape with Ciskowski as the head of college scouting and Gaine as the head of pro scouting.

Seems like Parcells/Ireland did Jones a little dirty on that one.

The league could still take matters into their own hands......but I wouldn't hold my breathe

The chances of that are somewhere between slim and none, and slim left town.

You guys keep forgetting that things like the Rooney rule and other PC BS is just for PR reasons. Its still a good ol boys network and that is how things are done. Its like the old smoke filled back rooms at political conventions.
I have no doubts that BP and Jerrah had a long talk before he took the Miami job and BP let Jerrah know who he was going after. Jerrah said OK but you will owe me. BP said OK. It will be interesting to see when and where that IOU is paid off.

Jerry initially said he's not going to let Ireland leave until after the draft. I'm sure Huizinga politely reminded him of the personal favor he gave Jerry letting him have Garrett when he had every right to deny Garrett the chance to even interview. Jerry isn't going to do or say anything about this.

Second, every General Manager has to answer to the VP of Football Operations or the Owner. That doesn't mean general manager isn't a promotion over the glass ceiling position he had here. Otherwise Ireland wouldn't have taken it.

Wow, you never stop do you. This thread has sweet FA to do with the Rooney Rule yet that is the only lens you will use to view it.

At least on the heals of MLK's Holiday you could give that crap a rest for once.

it has 'sweet FA' to do with MLK either, but here you are bringing it up. And what the hell are the 'heals of MLK's holiday'? It ain't the twelve days of Christmas... that was Monday, today is Friday. Maybe it's you who should give it a rest with your racial crusades.
