News: PFT: Lions to hire Tashard Choice as RB coach, reuniting him with Jahmyr Gibbs

This team brings in over a billion in annual revenue. Most valuable team in the world. They should have the absolute best coaching staff in the world. Every year. They had an opportunity to bring in a rising star as a position coach, but chose to not increase their offer a couple hundred thousand to secure a deal. Huh....

Are we as fans collectively good with this? I'm not good with it. Had he stayed at Texas and worked towards a championship, I would've understood. If he took a coordinator job, good for him. But another NFL team managed to pay him enough to bring him on board, despite this team having a head start in familiarity and location. Bro, ownership really doesn't care about creating advantages over other teams. They care about cutting corners and saving money, even if it affects the performance on the field. Apathy is quickly evolving into disgust. Can't do anything but laugh.

Weird... Part of me thinks Jerry is reluctant to "set the market" for anything because less financially robust teams complain about not being flush like the cowboys.

Not specifically knocking you, just curious why everyone lands on it's obviously the money?

We have no idea what Dallas offered nor what Detroit offered. It was reported Choice was getting a large raise to stay.

Maybe it was money, maybe it's just Choice realized he had a 2nd shot at NFL and didn't want to pass that up.

Either way, no one can knock the coaching staff we've put together on offensive side of the ball.

It's an easy assumption to make. He entertained the interview, which says there was mutual interest. He left without a deal. No biggie. He had a pretty decent job already. Then out of nowhere another NFL team manages to acquire his services.

That alone isn't indicative of his motives, but this team has a history of going cheap on the coaches. Brian Schottenheimer is a prime example. I don't know if he's the right guy or not, but the way ownership treated the coaching search (minimal effort), and some of the things they've said and done don't give me much confidence that they value coaches like they should.

Again, Choice is a position coach. Normally this kind of thing doesn't bother me, but how they handled the HC search, who did they bring in for interviews? Robert Saleh? A zoom interview with Kellen Moore? Bill Belichick expressed public interest and they didn't reach out. Why? Because they're cheap and knew he would ask for more than they're willing to pay. Mike McCarthy signed a modest deal after being ran our of town in GB. Jason Garrett wasn't a world beater but they stuck with him for a decade. Wade Philips was never a quality HC option. Before him, Parcells (to get the stadium built), Dave Campo, Chan Gailey, Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson.

We've had 1 HC in 30 years that you could consider top tier. This franchise is valued #1 in the world. How do you attract top level coaches? Money. You could argue that many wouldn't want to work with Jones, and you may be right, but Parcells did it. Johnson did it. Belichick was willing to do it. Those are big time, elite coaches with massive egos. If they're willing to do it, others would be too. The Jones clan doesn't want to shell out the money to do it. I'm not irritated with Choice choosing Detroit. He's a good coach, but c'est la vie. I'm irritated with a long history of not doing what it takes to secure the absolute best coaches available at every position when it's clear that the funds are available. If you're good with that, we can agree to disagree.

The Jones’ only know how to do things one way. The cheap way.

I'm glad to hear that Choice is doing well. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Cowboys alumnus no matter where they end up.

That is, until the day they are facing the Dallas Cowboys.

So far this coaching hire cycle has shown me one thing the Joneses have not learned one lesson from the Eagles winning the Super Bowl. They are dug in even more to winning it their way. I hope everyone is prepared for the free agency cycle of disappointment when Washington pays our free agents. Can’t wait for the annual Jerry Jones catch phrase when he is interviewed at the Combine.
