Maybe I'm being a naive homer...

But if the same situation presented itself with DeMarcus Ware, I think Jerry tells Ware to get the surgery.

A doctor advising a player to get surgery is not the same thing as a doctor saying that if a person doesn't get surgery, his career may be over. Surgery may be the best option, but it doesn't rule out the fact that Merriman can get surgery after the season and still play.

I wonder how many of the people on here telling us how stupid Merriman is for trying to play are the same people praising Terry Glenn not getting surgery so he could play the season.

They advised Terry Glenn to get surgery, but didn't force him too...

The doctor wouldn't advise the surgery if the latter wasn't possible.

This will say alot about the Chargers organization if they do not step in and he gets hurt....

Not really. in the past when ever the Chargers were presented with making a decision they have always choose the wrong decision. A.J Smith is about the biggest blow hard in the NFL and the Spanos family are crooks plan and simple.

Opposing offensive coordinators have to be game planning to attack Merriman now.

I respect his desire to be there for his team, but it is not a smart decision. If the knee gives out halfway through this season and there is a good chance that happens, then he won't be helping his team this year in the playoffs and he will likely not be ready to go at the start of next season. In the big scheme he is not helping his team nor is he helping himself. He is going to turn what already is a serious injury into a devastating one.

I hope he changes his mind. He is such a talent and it would be stupid on his part to try and play it out.

That's not the only reason people think this is a bad move. Some people in Charger's circles think this is his last year with the team, and that the Chargers have little interest in resigning him. If that is indeed the case, why would he want to play that season on a bum leg, likely significantly lowering his effectiveness...and the amount of his next contract as well.

If he were to have the surgery now, he'd be 100% for next season, and could get a reasonable contract for a team that actually wants him, rather than sacrificing himself for a team that doesn't.

LMAO, this coming from the guy who wouldn't attend OTA's, and Minicamp as a rookie without a deal for fear of injury, now he's willing to risk his entire career on a bad knee... I'm guessing he no longer has the same agent that he did... lol

These doctors didn't simply "present the option" of surgery. They ADVISED him to get the surgery done NOW. That is their recommendation.

As for Terry Glenn, that situation was nothing like this.

Terry was 33 and his career would've been over had he gone ahead with the microfracture surgery. He decided to put that off and try to come back for one last hurrah, thinking Dallas would be a Super Bowl team.

Merriman is TWENTY-FOUR and could have a looong future ahead of him. Another dozen seasons from Shawne is possible if his health permits it.

He's making a really risky decision here that could cost him his career...

He needs to ask himself, "Am I prepared to be an ex-NFL star at age 25?"

If he has done that and the answer is "yes", then I have no problem with his decision. But I strongly doubt he has honestly asked himself that question. My guess (and that's all it is, a guess) is that he has convinced himself that the worst case scenario just won't happen and that he'd just be losing a year if he gets the surgery now.

And how much knowledge do you have regarding what the doctors said? The most we know is that they recommended he get surgery, which nobody disputed. That is all one can really say, i.e. it was the best option in their opinion which anybody would recognize. None of what you stated answers what I stated previously. None of what you stated entails that the doctors think Merriman cannot play on it effectively. The doctors may have been surprised, but it is already acknowledged that Merriman had this injury prior and was playing on it. This cannot be disputed by any doctor.

Those Miam Dolphins sure look like Super Bowl contenders...

Has he or has he not been playing with this injury effectively prior?

Maybe he is pulling a Dwayne Wade. You know, act like he has a crippling injury or is deathly ill only to come back and play at a high level so it appears like he is superman. You know, a real drama queen.

The team should put him on IR this will make the Chargers look really bad if they allow him to play.

It shows how little the chargers care about their players.

:hammer:

I'd hate to be a chargers fan. I heard from a 'friend' that the reason LT didn't play was because of a clause in his contract stating that if he knowingly played hurt that it voided his contract leaving the Chargers free of his salary and they wouldn't ammend it to allow him to play in the playoffs so LT sat it out. If thats true the Chargers will never , ever win anything.
