I'm pretty sure the Cowboy FO knows the nuances better than we do...and they believed he was able to practice two weeks prior to his first game back.
Well he isn't practicing so maybe they don't

10 game suspensions aren't that numerous but are there any other examples of a player returning to practice 2 weeks early

I looked for a little while yesterday and didn't find anything.

Mickey Spagnola said a two week allowance prior to the suspension ending to start practicing is usually given, but there was a lot of back and forth between the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL yesterday before the team was told Randy Gregory could not suit up for practice.

NFL Policy and Program for substances of abuse

There's been plenty of speculation about Randy Gregory missing a test following the 10 game suspension, here's what is said about that.

When a Player fails to appear for testing, the Parties, in consultation with the Medical Advisor, will determine the nature of the failure and the degree of the Player’s culpability. If the failure to appear is determined to have been a deliberate effort to evade or avoid testing, then the failure will be treated as a Section 1.5 violation, subject to appeal.

For other cases, the failure will be treated as follows: Unless a warning is issued, the first time a Player fails to appear for testing, he will be fined up to $25,000 under his NFL Player Contract and will be placed into the Intervention Program.

Per the policy, unless Gregory was deemed to be evading a test, the punishment for the first missed test is a warning or $25K fine. Gregory reportedly left the treatment facility for a weekend and then returned. I've no idea why he left if the report was true, but Gregory returned in short order and resumed his program.

The medical adviser carries a lot of weight in the program.

If that doctor feels Gregory is doing his best to comply with treatment, it will go a long way in his favor.

Good info as usual

I was able to find that Josh Brent was allowed to return to practice after Week 9 when he was suspended 10 games in 2014 but that may have been special circumstances....Tom Brady couldn't return to practice until Week 5

I think you may be right about the Medical Advisor

It's crazy.

Whatever is going on with Randy Gregory, the NFL should be communicating with the Dallas Cowboys about where he stands in the substance abuse policy.

Dallas was under the impression Gregory would be allowed to practice today. When word leaked out, the NFL told the Cowboys he couldn't practice until the suspension was over.

There's no reason for any misunderstanding. The NFL should be updating Dallas on Gregory's status on a weekly basis.

The Cowboys should've been informed in writing that Gregory would not be allowed to practice with the team until his suspension ended.

Quit with the cloak and dagger nonsense.

It's fine to leave the fans and the media in the dark regarding Gregory's status, but not the Dallas Cowboys.

None of them know anything, they're all trying to read the tea leaves the same as the rest of us.

The NFL didn't wait until Randy Gregory's initial 4 game suspension was over before announcing the additional 10 game ban back in September. If Gregory failed/missed another test to earn a year long span on the shelf, it should have been announced.

If it was in the works and Gregory appealed, the team should at least know about it and they haven't heard a peep.

It's kind of hard to run a football team when the governing body of the league leaves you in the dark regarding the status of a player.

Pathetic.

Blimey! Odder to waste such a post to a total loser, good lad. Now, I am shamed for responding to a post about a total loser, old fellow. ...pass the brandy along would you, good chap?
