RAIDERS OFFER MORE THAN $30 MILLION GUARANTEED

A league source tells us that the Oakland Raiders have offered quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, a six-year contract containing more than $30 million in guaranteed money. The actual number could be closer to $31 million than it is to $30 million.

This information is contrary to reports that the Raiders have topped out at a lower number.

We're also told that the Russell camp presently is looking for guaranteed money in the neighborhood of $35 million.

Though we don't know how such a package could be put together in light of practical restrictions such as the rookie pool and the 25-percent rule, we're told that Russell's agents believe that their proposed structure would allow an amount of that magnitude to be guaranteed, and would likewise survive scrutiny of the management council.

Other obstacles remain, including the extent to which the guaranteed money will be paid out in the form of an option bonus. But the present gap in guaranteed money is wider than previously believed, and unless Russell's side of the table drops its number significantly, this one isn't getting done any time soon.

Our guess is that the Raiders believed that the Russell camp was demanding amounts in the neighborhood of $35 million guaranteed in order to get the team to go north of $30 million, and that the Raiders planned to do so, possibly along with a request that concessions be made as to the other issues. But now that the Raiders have moved up, Russell's folks are holding firm.

You know what? these 'have done nothing yet', 'I am god', 'everyone bow to me', 'pay me whatever I want because you can', 'haven't played a down in the nfl yet','get me rich quick', sons of britches who come out of the college ranks demanding all that damn money should be ___________!

Man, what is the NFL coming to?

oh well, I will step down now....

it's coming to pay per view.
it's coming to a head like hockey did.

there's a limit of revenue in this sport and it got smaller after we proved we can't make a dime in europe.

it will continue to rise like there is no limit, and when we hit the limit that was never there people will cry foul because there was never a limit before so why now?

when we get tired of paying the big bucks and go do something else, then it will adjust. till then - if we keep paying the high prices, it will keep growing.

Players will get paid more and more each year...

Yep. It's unfortunate but inflation hits everything.

Russell is an elite prospect, he's going to be fine. Number one picks tend to hold out.

Umm so what's Brady Quinn's excuse for holding out?

does anyone know what the previous highest 'guaranteed' monies were on a rookie contract?

A Modern Day Jeff george?

Exactly... He wont see any PT this year anyway unless Daunte hurts his knee again.. So maybe he will after all...

They are just setting themselves up anyway to take McFadden .

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that a rookie drafted in the top of the first round can come out and immediately become one of the top paid players in the league. How this payment scheme got so out of whack I will never understand. The rookie salary limit is one thing that the NBA has gotten right over the years.

The insane escalations will continue until fans quit paying high prices for tickets, memorabilia, beer, hot dogs etc. As long as people are willing to pay, there will be high demands made on them.

What kind of money did Tony Dorsett get when he signed his rookie contract? I wonder how it compared to other high paid players of his era. That was 30 years ago. I bet it would be an interesting comparison.

Talk about major risk. 30 mill for a QB that has not done jack in the NFL. If the raiders are wrong this could cost them big time for a long time.

The Dallas Cowboys today signed Troy Aikman, the quarterback from U.C.L.A., to a six-year, $11.2 million contract. It was the largest contract ever for a National Football League rookie.
