I don't believe there is some endless money pit, these raising salaries will one day be the death of sports.

People said this 20 years ago. They said it 10 years ago. They'll continue saying it. And what happens? Sports leagues make more money now than ever. Go figure.

And the first million dollar a year contract was going to break the back of MLB.

How'd that go?

I don't think it will be the death of Sports.

People in America have tons of dispoable income and one of the areas they love to spend it on is Sports. Just go out to EBay and look at the prices some of these tickets are going for. You cannot buy a ticket for less than face value and you cannot get a ticket through ticketmaster for a Cowboy game no matter wher it is played. I have tried for the past few years.

The TV contracts will continue to go up as Ad prices go up and inflation goes up on the related items that are advertised. It is a normal economic cycle that may have a few corrections along the way but as long as Americans have disposable income (barring a bad recession or depression) Sports will continue to be big.

It is not just sports, its entertainment ($10 bucks for a movie) and business with execs making many millions more than NFL players and TV stars.

Death of sports no death of major league sports as we know today yes. Every thing has an end game and yes I think one day the league will over price itself to the point people will not be able to afford it and the networks will not continue to invest as much. I'm not saying this will happen over night it may be many more years from now

Your thinking short term I'm talking longer term. If you think it is good business sense paying out big money to unproven players then that is your mindset not mine I disagree with it. Sorry you have a problem with me not wanting to say oh well they deserve it because I don't think they deserve it.

But we have seen this over the long term, haven't we? 1 million 20 years ago, 5 million, 10 million, it keeps going up -- just as league revenues go up.

20 years ago is not a long time ago and it is not the fact that the price has increased it is that how fast it has increased over the last 10 to 15 years. If you don't think a time will come when pro sports will price itself out of existence or at least as we know it today then we will just disagree. I just don't think it will be able to continue at this rate without major problems. I'm not blaming it all on the players I recognize the greed of the owners as well

This affects the Cowboys if they have the #1 pick next year. Because that guy will want more then what this years pick received. I hope the Raiders do not screw this up for everyone.

They haven't this is an increase of what? 10-15% over what Mario Williams got last year (26.5 mill)? Every year there is an increase and there is always a bigger jump when the salary cap rises. Alex Smith came in around 24 million the year before - about the same level of increase.

Folks act surprised but you could have likely asked any GM in the league what sort of guaranteed money the 1st overall pick would get this year and he'd likely have made an estimate in the 30 mill range. This is no surprise, just a natural progression of salary #s
