BULGER GETTING BENCHED

Welcome to another average, normal, routine Wednesday morning in the NFL.

Oh, by the way, a league source tells us that Rams quarterback Marc Bulger is getting benched.

Bulger signed a mammoth contract extension at the outset of training camp, but has been playing poorly with two broken ribs. (But he played with broken ribs last season, and did very well. We think Jay Glazer of FOX reported that over the weekend.)

Veteran Gus Frerotte will take over the starting job for the 0-4 Rams, who host the Cardinals on Sunday.

We're also told that offensive coordinator Greg Olson is being demoted. Presumably, head coach Scott Linehan will take over the duties.

Other than that, it's just a normal, routine, average Wednesday morning in the NFL.

So - we decimate team's rosters with injuries, cause them to sit their starting QBs and demote their offensive coordinators.....

can the Patriots say any of that?

This season has been so amazing so far. We just beat the ever-loving snot out of the opposition. I'd hate to have to come off this high.

You have to protect your high priced QB. Their offensive line is terrible. He got beat up and sacked a lot last year and this years line is even worse. It is worth more to the future of the team to let him rest and heal back to close to 100% rather than let him get beat up the next few weeks.

Before the Rams gave Bulger a big contract many thought it was a no brainer to pay him. The only negative was that he has a history of small injuries. He has only played in all 16 regular season games once and that was last year. With that history and the current state of the team it is a good move to rest him a while.

Why don't more NFL teams devote resources to improving the quality of their OLs? Of course we don't do very well in that department until this year, but at least last season we started to improve (except for Riveria).

Someone should make a list of all the benchings, demotions, and injuries that happened this season so far as a result of playing Dallas.

This is crazy. Two weeks in a row we've caused our opponents to bench their starting quarterback. I'm sure Bulger's ribs had a lot to do with it, but it's still funny.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. They have to sit Bulger and let him heal. Call it a "benching" if you want... but they just don't want their line this year to get the guy killed. Their season is screwed at this point anyway, so you might as well get the backup killed and let Bulger live to play another day, so to speak.

We are just beating the crap out of teams this year. :D

Because they might get laughed at for handing Leonard Davis $50 million?

Funny. I don't hear a lot of laughter now about Davis getting his money.

Wonder why that is? :laugh2:

We might have to change our name to the Dallas Grim Reapers. We are just leaving a trail of bodies in our wake.

I understand the benching and I doubt it's permanent. I think it's about letting Bulger heal, but I think Linehan is just passing blame on Olsen. Injuries are the main reason for their problems and Linehan can't take the heat. He would be gone next year if I were the Rams owner. This shows me all I need to know about Linehan.

Hard to find a bigger riches to rags story than the Rams this year. They had more total yards from scrimmage than any team in the NFL last year, and Bulger had more passing yards than Peyton. Now he's being benched after the first month of the season.

It's PFT people.

On NFLN yesterday I heard that Linehan intends to still play Bulger because even an injured Bulger gives the team a better chance to win than Frerotte.

Such a statement speaks volumes about the latter.

Honestly, all this tells me is that it's probably pretty accurate.

Its smarter then leaving Bulger in there as long as they did on Sunday. With the O line in the shape that it is, 0-4, its the smart thing to do benching Bulger.
