PFT: Rudy Carpenter hints at possible Cowboys shenanigans

FYI, I don't see the post on his website anymore, so I guess someone alerted him.

Florio doesn't know what he's talking about. Teams can pay practice squad players as much as they want. The Patriots regularly pay more than the minimum.

...practice squad player's salaries calculated in the cap?

Still there - http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/12/03/cowboys-offered-carpenter-active-roster-money/

with an update

We initially thought that paying a guy active roster money without adding him to the active roster was a no-no, in part because the person who tipped us off to the Carpenter interview indicated that it's a no-no, and because we then failed to independently research the point before addressing the subject.

As an astute reader points out, it has happened in the past.

So we previously were wrong, and we apologize for that.

And there goes our shot at making a good first impression on the new corporate overlords of our current corporate overlords.

We're not saying the Cowboys tried to skirt the rules. That said, any effort to funnel extra money to a practice-squad player in order to get him to stay put would be a clear and blatant violation
Um, that's exactly what you're trying to say.

Did we just get a 25 year old Beverly Hills Cop reference?

There's a lot of that going around these days....

And now, many of you will join me in my utter disgust that Rudy Carpenter was ever a Cowboy in any way, shape, or form. He is and always has been, a loudmouthed punk.

Hos. If there's no implied rule violation, doesn't that mean you should probably take back all those unfair things you had to say about the nice Sun Devil?

I don't much care for the Scum Devils. He is one of the Scum Deviliest. Never liked that we signed him. Glad he is gone. Around he we refer to him as catfish. All mouth, no brains.

So Hos, don't hold back, tell us what you really think about Rudy Carpeter.

LOL! So he ran with a story, and an attempt to make it seem that Dallas was breaking the rules, when in fact it turns out they didn't break any rules and he was too dumb to check that out before hand?

What an idiot.

No, I think I will add that he is a putz.

If he fit down the loo, I'd flush.

As long as there is no loss of draft picks involved, who cares. Its only Jerry's money.

Based on the answer there my take is that it is allowed but the team still has to be under the salary cap including the extra money paid to the PS player. If this is the case, we really should have given Matt Moore some extra money to entice him to stay back in 2006 - could have been useful last year when Romo went down.

Maybe Dallas did offer Matt Moore a little extra money to stick around on their practice squad. If I was a player I would probably take the opportunity to be on an active roster over being on a practice squad even if the potential salaries were close.
