MM was hired for.......his post-season experience (Stephen's words ). Hell Garrett's ceiling was a winning season and MAYBE a playoff appearance.

Garrett's ceiling was the divisional round, they got there three times IIRC, Packers twice and the Rams. We'll see if the Cowboys ever get that far with MM.

Just me, but I do think Jerry will favor a new offensive scheme for Dak. Reason: we have one more year to decide whether to lock him in for another 3-5 years ( likely close to $50M ). So you have to ask, has Dak peaked, or is it KM and we can see Dak's game take another level under Payton or a different offensive scheme ( west coast ???? )
I can see this scenario where Jerry thinks like this.

Payton will have better options. All Jerry has to offer is money. There are teams out there with better potential and better ownership.

is this new? It also depends on what the saints want for him since he has a contract with them. BUT, I do believe Mike gets the boot if we lose in 1st rd again.

If Dallas goes 12-5 again I couldn’t fathom Jerry fires McCarthy. Due to what? Negligence? Failure as a coach? No way
They almost fired him last year. You are here every day. Get a clue.

MM went 4-1 while Dak was out. Swept the SB teams and only lost one statement game against GB. If he makes it past the first round, he keeps his job.

I believe that was mostly media hullabaloo. based on how the season has gone, MM has already locked in the 2023 coaching position regardless of what happens after today. Jerry has nof fired a coach with a winning record in the 30 years since Jimmy, not to mention a record as good as 12-5/11-6 in back to back years.

I also don’t think Sean would come to Dallas even if the job was unoccupied, unless Jerry gave up a lot of GM control which will never ever happen

I can see it, but I can also see him back. McCarthy was brought in to win in the post season. Another 1 and done and I could easily see him getting fired if Payton will come

If we lose today sans Hurts, I could see momentum growing for a move

I don’t know what he brings to the table that Mike doesn’t, based purely off track record. I do think he’s a better and more creative playcaller than Mike however, and we could use that.

I think Payton goes to LAC, though. Any coach would love to have a guy like Herbert to build their team around.

I thought that too earlier in the year, but suddenly they’re 8-6 and have a shot at seeing JAX round 1. Do we fire the incumbent if he gets to KC round 2 and loses a close one? It’s a similar question about McCarthy, are they really firable based on current track records?

I think SP would be an upgrade but not such a colossal one that would get us over the hump.
I think his game management and player management would be the biggest improvement.
Not sure he can overcome the FO meddling, heck HOF coach Bill Parcells couldn’t and by the time he was able to put together a roster to his liking, he had had enough of Jerry.

Rumors fly of Sean Payton to Dallas, if Cowboys falter down the stretch
Posted by Mike Florio on December 24, 2022, 11:28 AM EST

The rumors come at a time when ESPN.com is reporting that Payton is “already putting together an all-star staff,” with former Broncos coach Vic Fangio as the potential defensive coordinator. That’s really not a surprise, however. Payton has said he will be coaching sooner than later, and that he’ll be returning in 2023 or 2024. It would be ridiculously foolish for him not to have a staff ready to go; if he doesn’t, he’d have to slap something together on the fly, if an opportunity emerges to coach in 2023

Sorry Jerry's been naughty. only coal from Santa for him.
