PFT: Smith The Odd Man Out In Carolina?

True...I would love to see him here down the road. I have been saying, being here in Charlotte, that this was going to be a problem with these 3 players. Problem is that they are falling behind IMO, in that division, and breaking the bank with even 2 of the 3 will leave them with major problems at other positions. Oh well, better them than us!

Eventually, we are going to have the same problem with our DBs and then, with our DLs. We took Roy and Newman pretty close together and then signed Henry in 05. We took DWare, Spears and Canty all in 05. We signed Ferguson in 05 as well and drafted Hatcher and Carp in 06. We are going to be in the same boat eventually, IMO.

That would be a PR disaster for Carolina to let their best offensive weapon and fan favorite slip away, it would hurt their reputation with free agents as well.

This team doesn't want to go down in history as the one that overpriced Sean Gilbert and low balled Steve Smith.

hey we played Carolina last year and I dont remember him having a good game against us - and that was against our offensive line ! Was it Columbo who handled him well the entire game ?

That's not worth tying up 18 million in him.

Why don't we draft our own Steve Smith? There is a Steve Smith that plays WR in this years draft...

;)

He might be a Steve Smith, but he aint number 89. In regards to Peppers, the knock on him here is that he really has games where he disapears and gets handled. Not very consistent.

Sorry, but I can't see the Panthers choosing Jordan Gross over Steve Smith.

The fact is that Gross has been a disappointment for the Panthers.

He's shown that he's not capable of playing the left tackle position at a high level.

I can't see a scenario where Carolina would choose to pay him over their one true offensive playmaker.

Probably true. Gross has been "solid", but not dominating, and was unable to move to LT last year.

Steve Smith is a bellyacher. The older he gets the more cantankerous he'll be.....

boy you think gibbs and snyder wouldnt back the truck up for him.

He fits the profile of a gibbs wr to a tee. Small, quick, agile, feisty....

Steve Smith has always played with a chip on his shoulder. Imagine how he would play going to another team with something to prove and even more of a chip on his shoulder.

Or he'd be a rage filled moron like he was against Dallas in 2005 and get himself ejected game in and game out.

I could see Dallas making a move to get him...

If I were the Panthers, I would try and trade Peppers. Yes, I know his is dominating. Here is the issue. At $18M/yr you can get another good player via FA and a #1 draft choice and pay all three and give Smith more money. It's worth in my book. All about checks and balances. Peppers doesn't balance out in my book at $18M.

you dont trade away the most dominant strong side defensive end in the league. you dont trade reggie white or bruce smith or deacon jones or julius peppers.

That's what I was thinking. You can find another pretty solid RT... You can't find another Smith.

The only argument for choosing Gross over Smith would be age, and that's not a very good argument.

I would hope Dallas would also.

if this were to happen before June 1st, pipe dream that he gets released, but still, imagine if he's cut before June 1st, we dont' have to pay TO his bonus, and we shell out bucks for Smithy

that would be awesome

note: I like TO, but Smith is younger

One thing PFT did not take into account is the salary cap is going up again next year. That won't solve Carolina's problem, but it will lessen it.

You can't put Peppers name in with any of those. He disappears for many games at a time and does not appear to be even playing very hard. Go back and watch our game from last year and watch Peppers. Based on where I live, I have to see all the Panthers games, and he can dominate, but he takes too many games off for the $$ he gets. Check out the stats between him and Ware from last year. Notice the consistency from Ware and the gaps in games from Peppers.

Peppers had better stats than Ware in only 1 category and that is sacks. Peppers had 13 and Ware had 11 1/2. Not that big of a difference. Ware had more tackles, FF, INt's, TD's. More than anything though, he showed up every week.
