PFT: The Jets will not exercise Mazi Smith 5th year option

Feel however you want nobody complained about the Mazi pick. He was a projected 1st-2nd round guy. Lack of burst doesn’t mean bad pick.
Yep,.. at the time he was drafted he was touted to be the best run stuffing DT in the NFL draft.
And we suxed in Dan Quinn's run defense.

Plus he was a freak athlete. and chiseled at 320 lbs.

Methinkks any criticism of that Mazi pick Now is all in purely hindsight in how he turned out..

Not how I feel, it's about studying scouting reports and trying to analyze how and whether he fits in the NFL.

Lack of burst almost always means bad pick in the 1st round. Lack of lateral agility is like 97% bust material. And when you lack both? You're just not going to be a top level starter.
Vince Wilfork, Casey Hampton, Dontari Poe….all guys who came into the league with lack of burst. Mazi stinks. Not defending him just I understood the pick at the time. “Burst” is a new keyword people like to use. I heard it a million times during draft day.

Oh it is. I remember like it was yesterday and I don’t recall anyone being concerned with his “burst”. All I’m saying is it’s a hindsight view to say he was a bad pick. I think we all wanted and expected more.

Nope, I knew he was a bust after just one preseason game, and I knew he was reached for a round early in the draft.

Good luck Mazi. That is a big man. Will always have a career as a bouncer at least.

It was when training camp/preseason started that fans knew we had a problem.

I mean, not a shocker at all. Once the NFL made the 5th year option fully guaranteed once enacted, instead of the year of the 5th year being active, definitely changed the dynamic for those 1st rounders that never lived up to their draft status.

Draft busts/disappointments will always happen, but just felt from the first offseason that he guy just didn't live and breath football. Nothing quite wrong with that, but at the same time, he still needed to improve his game to actually be decent in the NFL.

No sir, no hindsight involved. None whatsoever.

A huge part of being a run stuffing NT is being able to fill the gaps on either side of you, which means you must be able to move laterally. Mazi doesn't. It's not any more complicated than that.

I think you should read more closely before accusing someone of using hindsight. I've already explained this.

No, it is not hindsight. You're reaching now, as I've already explained this.

First of all I'm trying to figure out how this is a story are we just having fun mocking this This is not a surprise it doesn't matter besides the fact that he just got in trouble didn't he I mean this is so far from a cowboy story I know he's an ex cowboy but it's just reeks of like somebody just wanted to make fun of them and make fun of Jerry for picking Mazi and here it is at the top six pages deep This is crazy this has become a satire place to come in here and talk some nonsense...

We continue to talk about camp players that are actually on our team the the rookies let's break them down more let's breakdown the schemes whatever we need to talk about just talk not talk about some of this stuff is so ridiculous to talk about it's insane I don't think other teams fans bases go back and live in the past so often they come up with some ridiculous what ifs..ughh:facepalm::rolleyes::espn::popcorn:

Wilfork: Absolutely not true. He was freakishly quick. It's obvious you never watched him, as he was the package. Some of the best burst and lateral agility I've ever seen in a guy that big.

Poe turned out to be just OK because he was just OK in lateral agility. Didn't he have burst? Don't remember.

Wasn't reading scouting reports back when Hampton came in. I'd bet that he was very quick off the snap, though. Great low build to keep the OL's from getting under his pads.

Watching him early on being so slow off the snap did it for me. And pretty much everyone else
when you are that slow, all the size and strength in the world is not going to help all that much
those that kept claiming it was because of coaching were so laughable

It is because I don’t recall you calling him a bust on draft night.[

As a matter of fact….

Doesn't have Payne potential. Mazi has poor lateral agility which will severely limit him as a player. He's a clone of Sheldon Day. Mazi will most likely be a solid rotational NT type. 4th at the earliest.

And this is why I say it’s a hindsight view.

I knew when I read his scouting report.
I’ve read it even longer. I’m not saying it’s new I’m saying it’s the new “in” word when people want to show they know ball or to sound like they do. Not saying that’s you it’s just what it is.
