Whispers — NFC

Vikings' Robison will have to be major contributor in early going

By PFW staff

June 13, 2009

— The Vikings like what they have seen this offseason from DE Brian Robison, who likely will play a big role early in the season. Robison often kicks inside to tackle on passing downs, and if DTs Kevin Williams and Pat Williams are suspended for the first four games, Robison likely will have to be a major contributor.

— Provided the Bears don’t make a move for a veteran pass catcher, we hear the odds are looking good that Brandon Rideau, who has spent much of the last two seasons on the practice squad, will make the final roster as the sixth receiver behind Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, Rashied Davis, Juaquin Iglesias and Johnny Knox. “With his height (6-foot-3), he comes the closest right now to being a Plaxico Burress-type receiver,” said one team insider. “He’s been around for a while now and knows the system, so that should help.”

— The Cowboys might have shot down the rumors or any misunderstood Jerry Jones comments about possibly re-signing Pacman Jones, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a little worried about the depth at cornerback. Terence Newman has been injury-prone, and while Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick will battle at right cornerback and take up the Nos. 2 and 3 CB spots, there is little dependable depth behind them. It’s an awful lot to expect much out of second-year man Alan Ball or seventh-rounder Mike Mickens, who is rehabbing now, to step in and be the fourth corner.

— Reports are that Giants QB Eli Manning has had an excellent series of OTA sessions throwing the ball. This isn’t a total shock, of course, given that he has won a Super Bowl and is coming off perhaps his most consistent seasons. But even our spies remarked at how sharp Manning looked for this time of year.

— Our Cardinals sources continue to be impressed by first-year WR Lance Long, who routinely made eye-catching receptions in the team’s voluntary OTAs this offseason. “He’s very athletic and very quick in and out of his breaks,” said one team insider of the 5-11, 186-pounder out of Mississippi State. “It will be very interesting to see if he ends up being anything more than just a practice-squad guy.” Word is Long has up to now outperformed second-year WR Early Doucet, who has been inconsistent. “I would think he (Doucet) will need to make an impact on special teams in order to be a real factor,” the insider said.

— We hear Rams veteran DE Leonard Little, who was hampered by a torn hamstring last season and a toe injury in 2007, has looked very good this spring on the field and has excelled in a leadership role off the field.

— Rams FS O.J. Atogwe, who has participated in all the offseason activities so far even though he has yet to sign the team’s one-year, $6.342 million franchise offer, is quite pleased with the way he is adapting to new SS James Butler. “We’re adapting well,” Atogwe said. “That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to be here (at the OTAs), just to get used to the system, get used to the people I’ll be playing with. This defense is very organic, where you have to know what the man next to you is doing. … I feel that me and James are going to continue to grow and get better at that. I think as time goes on and we get more snaps, we’ll be really good.”

— Seahawks CB Kelly Jennings, who returned to the field June 10 for the first time since injuring his shoulder in the second half of the 2008 season finale against Arizona, told team insiders that his rehab process has taken a lot longer than he thought it would. The former first-round draft pick will have his work cut out for him competing with the likes of Marcus Trufant, newly acquired Ken Lucas, Josh Wilson and Kevin Hobbs, who continues to shine in offseason drills.

sigh...

If newman plays all 16 will that end this nonsense about him being injury prone?

What am I thinking, Gurode didn't really screw up shotgun snaps last season and people still act like he was throwing the ball over tony's head every snap.

The next bullet immediately after the Cowboys bullet talks about Eli Manning being elite, basically.

Credibility = gone.

Isn't this Ball's third year?

Yes it is. And he played pretty well when he was on the field last year.

Hopefully he continues to get better.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Somehow I must have missed the word "elite" in anything they wrote.

Eli has always had at best average accuracy. I find it hard to believe that suddenly in his SIXTH season he starts being accurate.

Newman's so good, that we're screwed when he's out and the time he spends injured gets magnified. Unfortunately, it's a label he's going to have his whole career, but it's sort of a badge of honor if you look at it the right way.

if he played for any other team that blurb woulda read

"after two years of being dinged up Newman is eager to prove himself one of the best corners in the league again, early reports are promising that he has made a full recovery and is poised to dominate the position"

but he is a cowboy so we get what we get

Give me Chris McCallister for a one-year deal.

If he's healthy that would be incredible and a great pick up. He was very good last year before he had his knee surgery. If he has anything left in the tank it could be a heck of a pick up and add depth to the position.

When you talk about depth on the team, then I think you need to be looking at some other places to be really concerned, imo. We read reports like this that told of people in the organization who didn't think Owens was a problem. Those people were obviously in the minority if they existed. So, if it did indeed come from the organization, and I'm not sure it did, I would ask that person this:

Who is behind Flozell Adams?

Who is behind DeMarcus Ware?

Who is behind Brady James?

Who is behind Jay Ratliff?

Who is behind Andre Gurode?

Most of you guys get this. The depth at CB and RB and TE is among the strongest on the team and the NFL. There is depth behind the outside linebackers, but it's just really young. Dallas did the right thing by cutting Ellis. However, you can't replace DeMarcus Ware. There is no Orlando Scandrick type of player there that could come in and play some games for him and help pick up the slack.

Tony Romo can't take the beating that he took last year. In my opinion, Montrae Holland must be the backup center. There is a reason Holland is working there. Even if he starts at guard, he has to be the next in line at that position, imo. Otherwise, if Gurode goes down, you are in big trouble. The running game is gone, and big DTs will destroy Proctor and Romo.

Dallas lost the guy that was considered the "weakest link" on its offensive line last year, and Adams played with a bad shoulder and busted up hands. Dallas couldn't block Arizona's four man rush. Depth on the offensive line should be more of a concern, imso.

As far as CB goes, Allan Ball is a much better option than Nate Jones. Wes Welker is still open by the way. He just converted another third down.

Terence Newman
Mike Jenkins
Orlando Scandrick
Allan Ball
Mike Mickens
DeAngelo Smith
Courtney Brown

There is some youth there for sure, but Jacques Reeves was called the "Human Target" for crying out loud.

Anthony Henry was hurt in 2005 and was basically useless during the last eight games of the season, after playing good. Aaron Glenn stepped up and played well. It was the LT injury that hurt. Dallas had a real bad offensive tackle situation that year after Adams went down. Henry got banged up in 2006 (his best year; see the Saints and Falcons games where he played with one leg and was beat deep in those games). Henry got hurt in 2007 (the Rams game) and didn't start again until December. After Amonte Toomer beat him repeatedly in the 2007 playoff game, we heard nothing, nada, zero. Henry should have been traded after that game, imso.

Dallas should have seen the pieces, to the Henry puzzle, which were looking them right in the face. Just look at the first game of 2007 where Henry couldn't come close to covering Burress on a deep post route that resulted in a TD and compare that to this last year. Plus, he played most of the 2007 season in the sub-packages where he played in that dime safety spot. You can't get beat on the outside or edge if you are playing a safety role.

The Cowboys won a 13-10 game against Tampa Bay last year with Mike Jenkins, Orlando Scandrick, Allan Ball, and Courtney Brown all playing major time in that game. How many shots at the endzone did Tampa Bay get at the end of that game? A bunch.

I can flip a coin right now and upgrade Heny's position. Heads for Jenkins and tails for Scandrick. The loser of the coin toss isn't your typical # 3 CB. Those two guys may be young, but they shouldn't be looked down upon because of their one year of experience.

I just don't see how many teams could be better at CB than Dallas, especially when you look at the top three players.

Just my opinion.

Yes it could. I don't know what an elite CB is anymore. With the rule changes and 4 and five WR sets it's difficult to dominate WRs. Newman is one of the top CBs in the league but he fails in one area. He does not create enough turnovers.

if you honestly compared those two guys, it's pretty clear how little you know about newman, and how much you actually pay attention to the cowboys.
