OK, but lets look at what and why Philly is looking at Jones, assuming the report is true. Why would they making this move? For the same reason they went after Vincent back in the day. They value the ability to lock up on the other teams WR and take them out of the game. They like that he can match up with bigger WRs and TEs. They like that he also has the versatility to play against smaller WRs. This would be a scheme move. Philly still likes to pressure defensively. Now, they haven't really done that as well as some of their teams from the past, this past season but that's still who they want to be Defensively. If you do that, what's more important? Is it more important to them to have a CB who can make INTs but can't really lock down his assignment or to have a CB who can lock down but doesn't really make INTs? I mean, obviously you'd love to have both right but Deion Sanders CBs don't exactly grow on trees unfortunately so you sometimes have to look at what's available to you.
That, IMO, is what the Eagles may be doing here. A pressure Defense scheme doesn't work unless you have that guy who can go one on one and take one side of the field away. There are two kinds of Pressure Defenses. There is the one where you do it with just a Front Four that can get maximum pressure without the blitz and there is the one where you do it with blitz scheme. The problem in todays game is that those guys who can physically dominate up front and get you that kind of pressure are really expensive to keep. It's really unrealistic to believe that you can have 4 of those guys up front and still afford to pay other positions. Almost impossible really. You are lucky if you can find two and keep them. Hell, we paid a record deal to a guy who gave us 5 sacks this year. I mean, that's how hard it is to find those guys in the NFL. You look at Philly and they have what, Graham, Barnett, Jeringan and Cox up front? Of those four, only Cox is what I would call the kind of player described earlier. The others are good fits in scheme but not really players who are able to dominate against anybody.
They do it with scheme so for them, the CB that can allow them to run the multiple blitz scheme is probably worth it because with out that guy, you can't run that scheme. So what's important to them? If we look at the secondary last year, who do they have on their roster that can fit the bill? I think you gotta context it in terms of what is really important to them, scheme wise.
That's just my opinion.
