Excluding a bad call by a ref, is there such a thing as a team losing a game it should have won or do they lose the game because well, they lost.

I dont think there is such a thing. Take for instance the Cowboys/Bills MNF game.

Tony throws 6 INTs, yet we won. Our defense held them in check just enough for the offense to score more points. So our defense played a helluva lot better than their offense did, given that they had 6 more chances to score than we did. Just my opinion..

I would like to know how the Giants feel about "The Miracle At the Meadowlands" when Herm Edwards returned that fumble. That game to me is losing a game that you should have won.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda. You know how that goes.

It's like saying that you "almost" got lucky on a friday night with a hottie from a bar. Trust me, "almost" doesn't count :lmao:

IT has happened but very rarely. If you have all but won a tough game and suddenly a stupid ref makes a huge mistake and say they win on a FG because of that mistake then yes. Say you are leading 28-27 with them on their 30 with 7 seconds left and they try a hail mary that falls incomplete but a stupid ref calls a non existent PI. They get the ball on your 30 and kick a FG to win 30-28. To me that is what would qualify as having a game stolen from you by a dumb ref. BUT that is pretty rare.

C'mon, you KNOW you can't resist on weighing in with your thoughts. :D

And you're not allowed to use placekickers as part of your response...

I would say, YES. I've seen some really strange things happen in games that changed the outcome. Weird bounces of the ball (like off Witten's heel and into the arms of a defender who wasn't expecting it), fluke plays (ball being tipped by a player), etc.

There was a case early in the Cowboys history when Eddie LeBaron threw what would have been a 99-yard TD pass which would have won the game only to have it called back because of holding in the endzone. The penalty resulted in a Safety which gave the Stealers the win.

People can be simplistic and say that If you lose then you simply didn't do enough to win but while that has a ring of truth to it, it is merely a blanket statement that doesn't really take into account ALL of the factors in a football game.

Football is a very complex game with a lot of variables. Talent, execution, gameplanning, turnovers, penalties, and luck all play a part in it. Having watched football for over 45 years I can say with confidence that yes, there are times when a team lost a game it SHOULD have won.

For anyone who wants to tell me I'm wrong, save your keystrokes, I don't care if anyone disagrees with me. I know what I know and I know what I have seen.

You disagree? That's nice.

You are what you are.

Did you really believe that we were a 10-6 team in 2003? No one does or did, so that blanket statement is not true.

Parcells is an idiot BTW.

You play who is on the schedule. A team cannot change that. They were 10-6 in 2003. That's the record. It wont matter what you say, you cannot change that.

Oh and Parcells is a Superbowl winning idiot. :)

I have seen many a good team lose to a bad team...but the question is whether on that particular day they were the better team...I would have to say no they were not the better team that day (more talent...play the same team 100 times again and they would never lose but on that day)...so in conclusion I would say both...they lost because they lost when they should have won...got that :laugh1:

How about a non-call?

It happened against Wade Phillips Bills against the Titans on the forward pass during a kick return. I think it was dubbed "The Music City Miracle".

Yes, if there's a really fluke-ish/dumb turnover.

Let's say Dallas had pretty much won the game against the G-Men, but in the 4th quarter they have two interceptions along the lines of the interception they had where it hit off of Witten's foot and bounced right into Kenny Phillips' hands.

Rare, but can happen.

But the good point can be made of how important quality refereeing is. The NFL isn't anywhere near as bad as the NBA, but there needs to be a bigger sense of urgency and focus on how to improve the officiating and make sure that the refs know the rules and can make the calls.

A great example of this was in the Panthers vs. Commanders game. On a 4th and goal the Panthers went for it and got stopped, but the running back fumbled the ball and it was picked up by Panthers TE Jeff King and the refs claimed it was a TD.

Commanders LB London Fletcher had to actually go to the referees and tell them the rule. Basically since it's 4th down, once the ball is fumbled it cannot be picked up by anybody on the fumbling team except for the original ball carrier. The refs finally got it right, but it's alarming that Fletcher had to inform these guys about the rules.

Would be nice to see more former players become NFL refs once they retire.
