Martellus Bennett looks like a complete bust to me.

I know he hasn't played a down in the NFL. I know he hasn't even gone through training camp yet. I understand that. I get that.

HOWEVER...

I've watched this kid drop probably eight to 10 passes over the last two days and looks slow doing it.

I expected a kid who was much faster, must more agile and had better hands.

So far, I don't see it.

Again, I hate to post something like that so early in a guy's career but man I just don't see it.

PROVE ME WRONG MARTELLUS! Please.

Hmmmmm. Have no idea about Bennett because we haven't even seen him play a preseason game just yet. But I will say that I didn't like the selection of a TE in round two.

As for Philpott. No, I don't think he's a talent scout by any means, but he did watch the practices.

This is called over reaction typical if a rookie does not look like a pro bowler in 5 seconds they are a bust

:bang2::bang2::bang2:

Would this be the same type of people that use to raved about chutch in practice on 11 on 11 drills and put Romo down because Chad threw that rocket ball.

How did that turn out

Just because you preface a premature comment by saying it's premature, doesn't make it any more viable. It's still premature.

This may end up being the case, that Bennett is indeed a bust, but the coaches aren't going to give up on a guy before training camp....and neither should anyone else.

The only other reports I've heard mentioning the guy have been of mixed review. A few drops, some great catches, and that he's had a difficult time absorbing the playbook. That being said, I don't like hearing that he looks slow.

Yeah, I think we can all agree we would much rather be hearing crazy talk like 'he's so good he will push Witten for playing time'.

There's been a couple threads talking about his ability to digest the playbook. Seems he's thinking alot right now...

When you're thinking about what you have to do, I imagine it's harder to let your athleticism take over.

That said, I think all the normal disclaimers should apply. Rookie, minicamp, no pads, etc.

Since Bennett has admitted to having trouble digesting the playbook, I think Philpott needs to understand that what he saw is a rookie who is "overthinking" the plays and not allowing himself to just run full speed through the routes and concentrate on catching the balls.

It does look like he's going to be slow to get there, but I think he's way too early to draw any conclusions about him based on how he's played. When he gets comfortable with the system, then we'll see how he plays and also begin watching how he develops.

I also didn't like how he was running his mouth after he got drafted so I hope him the best.

Have you seen the "leeblair" thread over there? 24 pages devoted to one poster.

The player we wanted in the 2nd round was Limas Sweed. Confirmed after the Draft by Stephen Jones. I think we were looking to move up to get him but the Steelers took him before we could do that. Bennett was someone who wowed us in private workouts and we didn't expect to be there in the 3rd round. He was good value at that point. I think he'll end up being fine. He is definitely a good blocker.

Hate to tell Roy the sky is not falling, but it isn't. Maybe next month it will.

Well, not too many people would be exercising caution or preaching restraint if he was burning up practice. Live by hype, die by hype.

Lots of rookies look bad in their first minicamp. Lots of rookies look great in their first minicamp.

Lots of rookies look bad in training camp. Lots of rookies look great in training camp.

Lots of rookies look bad in the preseason. Lots of rookies look great in the preseason.

Lots of rookies look bad in the first few games of the regular season. Lots of rookies look great in the first few games of the regular season.

Of course, it's not always the same rookies looking "bad" or "great" at each stage, some rookies are both at different stages, and none of that necessarily indicates how good that player will be by the end of their rookie season or for the rest of their career.

Remember last August, when Pro Football Talk stated, "There's already talk in league circles that defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, the No. 10 overall pick in the draft, could be a bust. ... As one source said, he's the "creation of a good P.R. campaign," and "there's no way he's a first-round pick."

Sixteen regular-season games later, Okoye was named to most -- if not all -- of the All-Rookie teams.
