I do too Stan. My favorite Western would probably be The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance but there are so many, it's hard to pick just the one.

One of my all time favorites but I consider that more of a Jimmy Stewart western than a John Wayne. Great actors playing villians in that movie, Lee Van Cleef and Lee Marvin.

Sands of Iwo Jima
The War Wagon
The Sons of Katie Elder
The Horse Soldiers
Angel and the Badman
They Were Expendable

The Quiet Man is one of my all time fav's..

Really like The Quiet Man. Might be my all time favorite also.

Great list all the way around but really like Red River, Stage coache (which was mentioned earlier) Angel and the Badman I had forgotten about that one.

Yeah, I can see that. However, even though the meat of that story was for Jimmy Stewart, I thought John Wayne dominated the story line. Also thought it was one of his better acting jobs. I guess I just like John Wayne, what can I say about that.

i have never seen the 1st one.....dont ever plan on it. I cannot stand John Wayne. he bores the hell out of me. The only movie I can even stomach him in is The Alamo, and that is cause it is about good ole SA. For the record, I don't care for Clint Eastwood's westerns either.

I am sure I will get a buttload of grief for this post, might even get banned by Hos, but I feel how I feel. In fact, I have never really been a fan of westerns at all. I do however, love me some Tombstone. I do like western comedies.....Blazing Saddles, Three Amigos, Rustler's Rhapsody, The Villian, Apple Dumpling Gang, Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, Cherokee Kid, and Maverick.

I used to call him the Puke instead of the Duke and it would get a huge rise out of my Dad.

You don't like Clint? Not even as Dirty Harry? Clint was/is the man.

I have never, and I will never, watched the remake of "Stagecoach." I do not care if Ann Margaret never looked better. To this day I have not forgiven Alex Cord for taking that role.

I wouldn't mind if non classic westerns were re-made. But you leave the classics alone.

John Wayne made a lot of great westerns. If you have not seen these, you might enjoy them more than you can imagine. In no particular order...

The Searchers
True Grit
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Shootist
Big Jake
Chisum
The Cowboys
Cahill, US Marshall
El Dorado
The Undefeated
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Rio Bravo
Rio Grande
Fort Apache
The Horse Soldiers
Hondo
Rio Lobo
The War Wagon
The Train Robbers
The Sons of Katie Elder
McLintock
The Comancheros
Red River
Angel and the Badman
North to Alaska
3 Godfathers
Dakota
Tall in the Saddle
The Spoilers
Dark Command
The Big Trail
Stagecoach

He also made some great war movies.

The Sands of Iwo Jima
The Longest Day
They Were Expendable
The Green Berets
Back to Bataan
Operation Pacific
The Wings of Eagles
The Flying Tigers
The Fighting Seabees
Jet Pilot
In Harm's Way
Cast a Giant Shadow
Flying Leathernecks

There were some that fit neither genre...

Hellfighters
Hatari
Legend of the Lost
The Quiet Man
Donovan's Reef
The Sea Chase
Wake of the Red Witch
The High and the Mighty
Island in the Sky
Trouble Along the Way
Reap the Wild Wind
Seven Sinners

You have me mistaken with someone on some other forum. I don't do that. Never have. No one on this staff does.

Not everyone has to like what someone else does. I love Westerns. Not just John Wayne's but his are clearly some of the best.

Oh no, we meet you get a kick in the pills for not watching John Wayne. That's a rule.

Hey, no joke here. Watch "The Searchers." There are some very real iconic images in that movie and some of the great character actors of all time in westerns accompany John Wayne.

For instance, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Hank Worden, Ward Bond, and Harry Carey Jr. John Wayne's final scene has him in a pose that is a direct tribute to Harry Carey Sr.

His signature line in the movie inspired Buddy Holly's song, "That'll be the Day."

Tom Sheridan, a Professor of History at the University or Arizona teaches an entire class about why it is the best western movie ever made.

I like John Wayne westerns, but I definitely prefer Clint Eastwood. I could sit down and watch all his classics and never get bored. 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' is one of my top 5 movies of all time.

Agreed. I kind of like John Wayne's WWII movies more than his Westerns. Although The Sons of Katie Elder and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon are classics.

El Dorado is probably my favorite Western since it has a great mixture of comedy and drama together. And you look at that cast: MItchum, Caan and some other great charactor actors. Some claim its a poorer remake of Rio Bravo; I consider it better. Mitchum is better than Dean Martin, and Caan is better than the singer.

You would have liked one of the History Professor at Sam Houston State he wrote a book with another guy on John Wayne called John Wayne American (James Olson was the professor) I will find out from my wife but I think he covered him in one of his classes she had his History course I did not take the course he taught

Later in Life the Duke said it was hard since he had made this image and he had to live up to it. Said he did the best that he could but could not live up to the image. But I think he did pretty good.

Wow, I rarely run across anyone who's seen Rustler's Rhapsody. It's a big favorite here, and often pulled out to show folks who want to see something a little...off the beaten track.
