The offensive player initiated contact though. I thought if anything it would be off-setting.
Yes, offsetting is exactly what it should have been and replay 3rd down. Hitchens also pulled the TE's shirt tail during the route although honestly I wouldn't call that a "material restriction" like the holding rule states. But the push off and shoulder push should have offset.

Yes he did.. but it was bang bang about the same instant that the TE pushed him in the face or chest. They never give a good angle to see which but you see the arm extend and you see Hitchens' head pop back and that's seemingly when he reached out and grabbed the shirt. But he instantly let go and closed whatever separation had been created until the facemask grab which pulled him off balance and that's when he started to stumble into Pettigrew which precipitated the "push" on the shoulder.

I would have thought the offsides would give us a free play, and the holding penalty would simply negate any positive play we would have gotten, but the offsides would still be accepted.

Clearly I was mistaken, but it seems like the way it should go. What if the hold was because they were offsides?
Still having trouble following what happened exactly. Offsides does give you a free play when you don't do anything yourself. It's a "during the play" penalty unless someone is unevaded to the QB. So they jump offsides, have 12 men, we hold, it's one play. I do remember a special case where they don't offset depending on which penalty gets called but these seem like equal penalties and they offset. What quarter and time was this? I want to watch it later.

No, you're misremembering again. Hitchens pulled the shirt tail before anything else happened on the play because he was trailing the TE horizontally across the field. Then the facemask shoulder thing happened as they were going upfield with Hitchens behind.

You can't make contact past 5 yards and if you don't get your head around when the ball is in the air it's P.I.

You can't pick up that flag...you can no call it but you can't pick it up, that was BS
I agree. The defensive back made contact with Gallup's chest with two hands before the ball arrived. Before it arrived.

You don't remember when Dallas played Lions in the Playoffs?
Yeah. You right. Dallas got a huge break in that game on a picked up pass int flag. Detroit would have been able to kill the clock.

I think it was the end of the third/beginning of the fourth. It wasn't unabated to the QB, but I believe that flag was thrown well before the holding against Dallas, unless it was the flag for the Cardinals having 12 men on the field. Either way, I would expect anything but unsportsmanlike conduct to be superceded by either the offsides or the 12 men.

Doesn't make sense to me that a free play can be wiped out by a holding penalty.

Yeah the rule book can use some fine tuning. Personally I think 12 on the field should end everything else and be enforced.

I still maintain that since Hitchens was much faster than Pettigrew (and Pettigrew knew it which is why he had to push off to crate separation) the reason there was any contact was because Pettigrew initiated. He begins by delivering a little forearm just as he crosses Hitchen's face right around the line of scrimmage. THAT was the first contact between the two not the shirt tug. The **** tug followed and then in turn the chest push then the facemask grab followed by the shoulder push. I'm sure the refs saw all of that which is why they probably felt like whatever Hitchens did to recover was probably justified.

In all honesty that was PI. Ball should have been placed at the 1. I can't for the life of me figure out why the flag was picked up. Could McCarthy have challenged that?

It should have been a TD pass from Dak. He was late and didn’t lead the receiver

It's amazing that idiots say this isn't pass interference. It's one of the most obvious in this game.

I was surprised a bit by no uses of TEs in the EZ, they should be bigger targets and more physical for Cbs to handle? Nay ????

Should've been a "drop in the bucket".
The good ones literally practice this throw by placing
a trash can just outside the back corner and try to
"drop" the ball in it. He had steps on the defender.
In the NFL, that's wide open. You're correct.

By the way, you have the patience of a monk.
I'd be benched by now... lol.
I'll give you slack , You didn't see the video of Dak mastering that EXACT drill ?

In the 4th quarter (about 1h53 min in), Marco Wilson committed blatant pass interference on Gallup. Wilson was not looking back at the ball. His head was away from the ball and facing Gallup, and he was simply there before the ball. The ref rightfully flagged him, but then, for some ridiculous reason, the ref picked up the flag?
....
What????
....
And, before anyone claims I'm blaming it all on the refs, ta geule. I'm not. This team needed to play better. They needed to stop the run better. They needed to quit committing boneheaded penalties. But I'm still being honest that the ref blew it by picking up the flag. This is one reason why I'm for having PI and non-PI challenge-able, and not in the stupid way they experimented with recently. If the defender is there earlier than the ball, it's PI. If he arrives simultaneously with or after the ball, it's not PI. This one was clearly PI. Wilson got their afterward, and with the back of his head toward the QB.

I have a difference of opinion. I think if the ref would have called the play the way it's been called, we would have had the ball on the one yard line. We probably would have messed up later so there's that.

But I don't make excuses for Dallas, I'm not going to make excuses for the refs. They screwed the pooch, period
