Woods was also in the discussion with Switzer.
Yeah. Couldn't have worked out better. Great playing of the board by the FO. Took some luck as well, but man things broke phenomenally

I wouldn't be surprised if Taco Charlton isn't the worst of the top five picks. He'll probably be very Marcus Spears-ish.
Think I'm a bit more bullish than you are on the pick. He wasn't who I wanted, but I feel like his impact will be increased by the defenses improvement as a whole. We may not be singling his name out game to game but collectively I think he fits really well.
It's nice when the dominoes fall as they're supposed to. Relief and excitement dripped from the draft room all weekend.
Taco wasn't their first choice to be first choice, but he was the best choice given the position allotments of this draft. I think Kevin King was higher on their board at that point, but with pass-rushing ends drying up quickly, Taco time was upon them.
Then, magic happened. Awuzie had a first -round grade, and Lewis a second. Both were nabbed at bargain-round rates. Two sticky-fingered corners with young legs to join last year's surprise, Anthony Brown, and suddenly the corner corps looks promising, healthy, and different.
But that wasn't all. After Ryan Switzer fell far later than Dallas expected him to, they gritted their teeth and walked away from Xavier Woods to take Switzer, and you could see the excitement in their faces to get a guy they didn't think would be anywhere near them in the 4th round.
But...lo and behold, the sixth rolls around and Woods is still there! Went up and got 'em, they did. How glorious was that?
So next year's potential defensive impact additions include:
Jaylon Smith
Charles Tapper
Demarcus Lawrence (healthy hopefully)
Taco Charlton
Cheetoh Awuzie
Jourdan Lewis
Xavier Woods
And if Jeff Heath can play.....
I'm hopeful for the defense for the first time in a good while.
Dallas had a second-round grade on Charlton. He was just the best of what was left.
Agreed. What I like also is that if a majority of these guys from this year's and last year's draft produce as expected, we'll finally be in the position to where our approach to the draft/free agency for the next 2-3 years will be "reload" (ie. New England) rather "rebuild" like it has been for usI'm happy with our draft picks. We filled needs as well as took best player available. I have to remind myself that we only have a limited number of picks. I wish coulda ... this and that, doesn't apply.
I think we brought in some guns for the next 3-4 years.
If we can get over the hump and string together a few playoff wins, then this would be a tremendous success.
Heath absolutely does, but in terms of Zone/Man Coverage, I would have to give the nod to Woods. Heath is more of an enforcer. And, don't get me wrong, I love seeing him lay people out when they test the middle ground he is covering. But if he's tackling them, he's a step too late. At the end of the day, I'd rather see an interception/incompletion, than an Heath stain on the field.
I was an old linebacker...I like the stains. Those mount up over a game.
' Heath stain',,, funny stuff!
But setting the tone has a beauty unto itself,,,kinda like the guys who didn't want to line up opposite of Larry Allen.
Draft grade by intent and strategy : A
I might even add that to A+ for just sticking to the plan and not reaching or taking any risk.
Well done Jerry and Co !!
Heath has been outstanding at coverage in zone and man the last couple of years. He is also better playing back then up. He struggles with consistent run fits playing up although he has improved a lot since 2015 preseason.
I have no idea about this step late thing. That hasn't been his problem. He wasn't late in 2014 when Megatron outjumped him or Petersen bowled him over with an assist from Dunbar. He was on time and got physically outmatched. He gets turnovers in limited snaps because of his timeliness.
I think people will be pleasantly surprised with Heath as a major contributor in the S rotation.
That literally means nothing. When the Cowboys were on the clock, the only player left on their board with a first round grade was Dalvin Cook. Would you be happier today if they had gone RB at 28? Somehow I doubt it.Dallas had a second-round grade on Charlton.
Isn't that true for every pick in the draft? He was just the best of what was left.
Draft pick is in. We picked who we did. I am not so high on the taco, but i do like the cb's we got. Our defense did get better. But we need a STANDOUT edge rusher on the one side. Im not sure taco is that guy, but i like our db's. And we have retribution coming in Tapper, and Jaylon, i think they will contribute a lot. Maliek Collins is better than given credit for... this defense will hold its own.Isn't that true for every pick in the draft?

The "step too late" line was only pointing out if he is getting there in time to tackle them, he wasn't there in time to stop the completion from happening in the first place. All I'm trying to say is whereas Heath will likely get the nod on most plays as the SS, it would be nice to have a guy back there on obvious pass plays, who has shown a knack for getting the interception, like Woods. Otherwise, much of Woods first year will be spent on the bench...and rightfully so. Unlike most, I like Heath. He wouldn't be my first choice to have back there, but he is far from my last...if that make sense.
I dunno. He has the range to get to the sideline and does so. He also was better at anyone else getting his hands on the football playing a third or less of the snaps.
Imagine Dez/Williams with two Beasleys and a Zeke. That look will cause some problems.
I may have Heath pegged completely wrong, but above all, I think of him as a enforcer...and that is just based on the fact that he hits with bad intentions. I may have pigeon-holed him there, but that's my impression. Woods is a proven playmaker. Granted, it will take time for him to adjust to the speed of the game, but I believe Woods ceiling is higher than Heath, when it comes to everything we want our Safeties to do. But again, that is simply my limited impression.I dunno. He has the range to get to the sideline and does so. He also was better at anyone else getting his hands on the football playing a third or less of the snaps.
