Player acquisition is a 365 day practice, Jerry needs to find a NT/DT to stop the run & no 1 WR

Even the getting gashed part is not consistent. Sometimes they have looked like the 85 Bears in how they have attacked the line of scrimmage and the ballcarrier. It just hasn't been consistent.. and to my eye at least, the problem appears to be at DE and LB more so than DT. Not saying I'm 100% right.. but that's what it looks like to me.
The difficulty with consistency against the run (or at least a big difficulty) is that the team is committed to being in attack mode on almost every play. As a result, the team will harass the QB more, and make an occasional stop on a RB behind the line of scrimmage, but it will also at times open up running lanes where there is some open space if the RB gets through the first attacking wave of defenders.

Accordingly, there is a bit of a trade-off. Cowboys are giving up a little on the run defense to have a great pass defense. It makes some sense because the passing game is where big chunks of yardage are gained.

And it's hard so knock the strategy so far considering the Cowboy defense is ...

1st in sacks
3rd best in points allowed per game
3rd best in passing yards per attempt
4th best in passing yards per game
8th best in yards per game

No the job of the DTs in the run game is to occupy blocks and let the LBs run free to the ball. In years past we would frequently see offensive linemen pushing the DTs back into our linebackers or getting out to the second level to get hands on them. That hasn't been the case to my eyes this year. I see the DTs winning or stalemating most of the time leaving the backers a path to the ballcarrier. The only ILB who can consistently go get the ballcarrier has been Micah.. Of course he was playing with that groin injury Sunday night so he was limited in that regard. The other backers simply have not diagnosed the play and shot in to make the tackle often enough despite the DTs allowing them the freedom to do so. I don't know if it's lack of recognition or lack of quickness or lack of want to.. but they are failing to get there all too often.
You left out collapsing/penetrating the pocket. Just holding a spot is what JAGs do. And thinking that's enough is what's keeping us from playoff success.

We need better backers also.

I said this yesterday and people on this board started to cry.

Lve is absolute garbage worse than Jaylon smith and our WR can’t create space .

We need a DT too because will McClay failed with John ridgeway .

I think for our run defense to get where we want it two things absolutely have to happen.

1) The DEs have to quit hunting the QB on run downs, play assignment football and not get hooked inside and shed that damn tight end sent to block them on edge runs.
2) LBs have to get better and recognizing and filling. LVE and Barr have been terribly inconsistent about their run fits. Sometimes they see it and go get the ballcarrier and at other times they're standing flat footed waiting for the action to come to them or even running away from the ballcarrier for reasons only they can explain.

I don't have a big problem with how the DTs have performed. Yes they have given up some plays but by and large teams have not had a great deal of success between the tackles against us. It has been the edges where we have been whupped. Which frankly is an absolute mystery for a team with this much team speed on defense..
Which is OK play for a DT as long as you're happy beating bad/mediocre teams and losing to the good teams.

We have a pretty solid dline
We give up the edge on run plays because we want the pass rush
We have a DLine that loses on the playoffs. If you want to call that solid, OK, but that's not good enough for me.

Dallas has never had the double tackle eater in the middle. Bohanna isn't it. Good rotation guy but no a clear space eater double teamer guy.

If Dallas had that with a rotation of Gallimore Osi and Bo it would be a stout middle. Making more opportunities for the def to be even better the they currently are.

Derrick Brown would be someone to throw the capitol at and lock him up after that

How about Cooper Rush and a 7th....similar to your pother offer.

Im of extreme assurance the Cowboys should listen to their DC and OC and talk with them about which positions they would like to upgrade.

My money is on they have done this routinely and nothing in the Draft, Trade or Free Agency made sense value wise.

Stop already. DJ Moore earns $20M+/year so Dallas wouldn't pay that and Carolina isn't trading their 1st round DT.

Think more the following:

DT Larry Ogunjobi Pittsburgh
DE Clelin Ferrell Raiders
DE Robert Quinn Bears

Those are the types of players Dallas should be looking at for reasons of contract/performance/scheme fit.

Larry Ogunjobi would be a fantastic addition. I think the Cowboys should make that move.

We've never had a solid rotation of DTs since the Jimmy days. It's been so long fans have now adapted to the mediocre effort of DT play. People underestimate the impact the A Gap has in overall success on defense.

I've read all the posts on this thread and I'm glad you get it. Poor and inconsistent DT play continues to be our detriment when we run into a playoff team who centers their attack with a run first mindset. Just look at SF game, along with TB. Our A gap got abused on both sides of the ball and people are still blind to the root cause as to why we lost.

I see where people blame the edge guys for runs to the outside. What they fail to see is how lines can pull to the outside because the guard on either side is freed up to do so and seal that outside lane where RBs can find their hole. They can do this because we don't have DTs that can push the A gap consistent enough to warrant a double team. Can you imagine if the A gap got pushed along with the way our EDGE guys get to the backfield. It would be absolute nuts.

The only DT worthy of snaps is Osa. The other guys are big but they don't have the respect of opposing OCs for them to ever double team our DTs.

Glad you understand the importance of where games are won and lost.

If this defense truly wants to be elite it must acquire a Veta Vea type of NT/ DT than cure achilles hill of this defense. On the offense the front office needs to sign OBJ or trade for Lockett from Seattle.

good luck , jerry likes "his guys" and he thinks lamb is his # 1, and gallup is his #2, so no way is he gonna bring in beckham or any other potential top
wr.
As for NT, I think they will stick with what they have.

In Barr's case it may be that he is thinking too much as he learns Quinn's system. I don't really have an answer for LVE. As I've mentioned many times. Armstrong, Parsons and Williams have not shown they can play the run well when it comes at them. I have always favored just blowing the whole thing up as the solution. I think having the ends play passive and trying to contain instead of attacking goes against what they are good at. Williams and Parsons have the speed to just go after the ballcarrier.. Let them do it.

Barr better figure it out soon because he is not going to be hear next year. Right now he looks disinterested. Maybe that is just unfamiliarity with the defense, but he is not the player we thought he would be.

One point about the run defense. If the offense would sart scoring points like they did last year, teams would not be able to run so much even if they were having success doing it. The best run defense is a good scoring offense.
