#1 Tony Romo - Biggest Romo fan/defender here, but he needs to start playing better and soon. I was disappointed the hear that his back was really affecting him after the first game, and I'm sure with the hits he took the second game was no different.
Romo did exactly what many said he needed to do....be a bus driver. It worked exceptionally well, but somehow now he is being abused for that. He started slow but got better as the game went on and I'm sorry, most of those sacks would have been sacks against probably 25 QB's in the league. My hope is that he can get a chance to be a bus driver against some of the better teams and not feel like he has to singlehandedly do it himself.
#2 Offensive line - They are run blocking pretty well, but their pass blocking is leaving a lot to be desired. They absolutely need to step up. I was one of the most vocal supporters of the concept of drafting high for offensive line, but they seem to have drafted players predominantly capable of run blocking as opposed to pass blocking. It's working for now, but when we play teams with legitimate quarterbacks, we're going to need our passing game to keep up.
Pass blocking also settled down after the first quarter and there are many posters who timed the rush and said that on the whole Romo had a fair amount of time in the pocket except for the obvious OL breakdowns. Tennessee has a pretty fair pass rush.
#3 Morris Claiborne - The guy just sucks, sorry. I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in a player who has played for the Cowboys after having such high hopes. Only player that comes to mind is Drew Henson and I still think Parcells set him up to fail.
Can you tell me how many catches were made against Claiborne against the Titans? The WR's for Tenn caught a total of 7 passes. I know from looking at the game book that there weren't more than a couple at most completed against him. He has not lived up to expectations, but his coverage in this game was pretty good. He also had a pass defensed.
#4 Pass rush - It's been non existent so far. The good news is Spencer is supposed to return soon, so at least we can see what he has to offer. I hope DeMarcus Lawrence can return to form when he is eligible. I also think that it is time to see what Michael Sam can offer this defensive line. QBs are getting all day against us.
Mincey had a lot of pressure against the 49ers. Locker was sacked twice and was hit quite a bit. We blitzed a few times but more often than not had a four man rush. Melton and McClain will get more rush as they round into game shape.
#5 Safeties - Our inability to stop the tight end is unacceptable, and yes, I know this is a problem that most teams in the NFL are probably having, but Delanie Walker shredded us Sunday, and Vernon Davis did last week. Marinelli needs to figure something out here.
You design a game plan to limit certain things. We game planned to take away the run and keep the big plays from the WR's out of the game. Worked to perfection. Walker had the one long TD on a play where he should have been tackled immediately, his 9 other catches averaged 9 yds per catch. Generally, that is not going to beat you.
At this rate the Saints are going to destroy us. We have a lot of winnable games on our schedule. And if not for Romo we're 2-0 right now. There are a lot of reasons to be excited about this season still, but we need to see some things change pretty soon, otherwise this is going to be a long and unfortunate season. We should be able to win at least 7 of our next 9 games.
Definitely agree we can win a lot of upcoming games. You are making all these grand statements worrying about the Saints....have you watched them play? They look pretty crappy. Let's get past the Rams and then worry about the Aints after that.
Scandrick should be back, Durant possibly also, and Spencer might be a game away from contributing. If we can make a little hay over the first half, we could have some nice reinforcements with Lawrence and maybe even Brent in the stretch.
