I agree that the cowboys shouldnt copy other teams that win the SB.
What they did was unique to their players and coaches, so cant be copied for same results.

They do need to develop a identity and be more innovative .

In 2000 the Ravens had Dilfer.

But take one player away from that Defense, either Ray or Reed and they don't go...

Most times most teams are 1 special player away. Carolina don't sniff 15-1 without Cam. More like 6-10

I bet you the 2000 Ravens win the Super Bowl without Ed Reed.

Defense win championships. Denver won the SB with Defense or this and that, so let's go get a Defense like theirs. Question? How many teams have a Miller, Ware, Talib, Jackson and so forth.

Here is something to think about.

I cant go back in duplicate every SB winner, I can but I'm not.

Every SB winner had their own identity, most SB winners normally have a good to great defense but to win you have to have your own identity and that special player or 2.

For example
Do the Rams sniff a SB w/o Kurt Warner- NO
Take Franco Harris or Lynn Swan away from the Steelers do they win- NO
Take Tom Brady away from the Pats, do they sniff 1 SB appearance- NO
Take Peyton away from Indy, do they sniff a SB- NO
Drew Brees- NO
Walter Payton- NO
Ray Lewis- NO
LT- NO

We could have had the #1 Defense last season but w/o Romo we still 6-10 with the #1 D

Super Bowls are built from a team aspect and yes you do need a pass rush, a good Defense but you also need intangibles to win. Last year we were 1 fumble away from the NFC championship with a starting D of:

Brandon Carr, Church, Scandrick, Wilcox, Lee, McClain and a bunch of nobodies on D. Those are the same players we had this year but instead of 12-4 we were 4-12. Why? Romo got hurt!

What is the purpose of this post? Nothing but to just try in improve at your worst position and move on. If you guys don't believe me, just go back and search the last 50 SB winners. Most had good defense(minus the Rams) but without that special player or 2, you don't go nowhere.

I half agree.

It takes a formula, just not a specific one. The formula is simple. Get the best players you can . Maximize each opportunity. Don't decrease the value of your opportunities by sacrificing talent for some perceived need that is probably misevaluated in the first place.

Also recognize that great teams are built by accident. They are built by luck. However, you increase your luck when you go by that very basic formula previously mentioned.

Jimmy Johnson didn't want Emmitt Smith. He wanted LB James Francis but he was taken one spot before the Cowboy's turn so Jimmy traded down. He had to be talked into Emmitt Smith by an old scout who told him to ignore size and speed and take a guy that flat out produced.

Does anyone think that Jason and Jerry sat down one day and decided they were going to create an elite young offensive line. Heck no!

They didn't want Frederick. They wanted a handful of other guys they couldn't get. They settled on Frederick and was roundly criticized for their choice.

They didn't want Martin. They liked him but they would have preferred Donald or Shazier. Even when they were on the clock Jerry had to be restrained from taking Manziel.

Do you think the Cowboys get to touch La 'el Collins after the 2015 draft if it wasn't for his bad timing?

You get the best players you can and create and environment conducive to bringing out the best in them. You hope that you have the kind of mix, a set of ingredients, if you will, that produces a winner.

But nobody sits down with a plan that says "Take this kind of RB, take that kind of WR". The key is, don't screw up evaluations.

Taking Franco or Swann away Steelers still win SBs....defense was tremendous plus offense had great depth.

Actually you take away Dallas dropping the game winner away and steelers don't win that game

I understand the sentiment, but you really should go back and look at the common demoninatos between the SB winning teams.

Since realignment, there have only been two super bowl winners that didn't finish the season with a top 5ish passer rating against.

Both teams were the Giants, who we all know got super Healthy/Hot on defense going into the playoffs during both SB years.

You have to have a good defense to get through the crapshoot of the playoffs.

Uh, no. Swann made circus catches against us. Take his acrobatic abilities away, I don't think they beat Dallas.

Reed didn't play with the Ravens then. So, technically, they could/did win without him. :)

even the greatest show on turf needed a big stop by the defense to win the superbowl....not to mention they held the titans to 16 points..

defense is the biggest common denominator for supe champs.... so hence....

ahh.. you know the rest...

Exactly.

They could have won without one of them without question. They were just that damn deep and good a team.
