ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Washington Commanders coach Joe Gibbs ruled Clinton Portis out for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys, an announcement that surprised Portis and created yet another bizarre twist in the running back's injury saga.

"He didn't practice today. ... If a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play," Gibbs said.

ugh, this is going to be a long game/upcoming week :bang2: :bang2: :bang2:

Mods, please change thread title. I wouldn't have reposted if the thread title had reflected that Gibbs had ruled Portis out.

I'm not buying it. Gibbs is just trying to get Dallas to not prepare for Portis. My guess is that he will make the trip and be active for the game. IF Portis doesn't play, I expect to se some quick screens to Moss or some reveres his way.

They are just trying to be sneaky. I also was wondering does Gibbs ever give props to Parcells like Parcells give to him? Sorry that just crossed my mind and since I was here thought I would ask since you seem to be on top of the PCs at least the cowboys anyway and I probably have never told you but you do an awesome job and thanks.

i don't believe it's within nfl guidelines to say a player will be out, and then he plays.

i don't think it's allowed.

but he's officially listed as doubtful, not out, so this title is misleadng.

If portis was still listed as doubtful, I could see that happening. But if a player is listed as "out", it is almost certian that the player wont go.

Meh... There'll be a Saturday walkthrough. Gibbs could just as well count that as a "practice".

I can just hear it now... "Well, golly gee shucks, Clinton came to me at the last minute and convinced me he could play, so we just went with it."

Did you read this thread, before posting the new thread? If you had, you'd have noticed that people had already posted the articles that he was out. Just saying that if there's an existing Portis thread, in most cases, what you think you're about to post may already be included in that thread.

And sometimes mods get a little backed up when there's breaking news and everyone wants to share it.

Now that said, I won't believe it until I see an official injury report w/Portis listed as OUT.

If this is one of Gibbs games, how moronic is it?? Does he really think that BP is going to hear the news, then say... "Okay guys listen up, Clinton Portis IS NOT playing. Let's throw out everything we worked on for defending him this week... forget it. We're gonna blow em out. Get overconfident, please."

If anything he's going to say this Gibbs guy is a snake in the grass and you can't believe anything he says. I don't trust him as far as I can throw him.

Actually, if Gibbs says Portis is out and a lot of money gets laid on the Cowboys minus the spread because of his statement, then Portis play and the Cowboys don't cover the points, the could be trouble in D.C. Guido and Lefty could show up and do a Theisman to Gibbs legs!

If Gibbs would turn off the radio sets for the Vikings, why wouldn't he try something like this, even if it is against the rules and unethical? After all, he is Joe Gibbs and he can whine, cheat, and lie with the best of them. The fellas in Vegas would forgive him.

But actually, everyone is well aware that betting odds have nothing to do with the injury list. ;)

Maybe it came across touchy, but I was actually trying to provide some general advice when it comes to breaking news.

If there's an existing thread about someone, then check it out before posting. Cuz when you do, that's when it really helps. ;)

Interesting, Gibbs sounds like BP on TO, don't practice don't play. Wonder if he will actually do it.

I still see Portis playing, lol. Least we could be prepared.

As far as preparation, it's pretty ridiculous to think that Dallas would have to change anything if Portis is out. They'll run the same plays with Betts and Duckett, just not as effectively.

Portis is a good player, but he's not a guy you have to scheme for.

I agree 100%. I doubt this is a mind game, because if it is its one of the dumbest mind games in history, and Gibbs is not dumb. This is a player that hasn't practiced full speed in over a month. You don't just turn it on in when you've been out of the game for an entire month. He didn't look like his usuall self at all last week. The Washington offense has looked horrible ever since camp began. This is a coach that needs all his players (much less his offensive MVP) out on the field, practicing and executing at a high level. Looking 0-2 in the eye, Gibbs has bigger things to worry about than this cloak and dagger nonsense.

And as far as this being some sort of trick to get the Cowboys overconfident? They're playing their home opener coming off a bad loss in a nationally televised prime time game against their arch rival that completely embarassed them in their last meeting. I somehow don't think they're going to come out lackadaisical and lethargic because Gibbs dropped Portis status to "doubtfull". If anything I'm worried about the Cowboys coming out too reved up and needing a few series to get into a rythem.

me either, last year they were duped in one game, and then outright embarrassed in the 2nd one, against these guys, I'm sure they're going to come out fully prepared and will expect anything to happen

Maybe you don't scheme specifically for Portis, but don't underestimate him as a player. He's a legit top five back.

Gibbs says Portis won’t play against Cowboys
Commanders RB doesn't practice Friday because of lingering shoulder soreness

Gerald Herbert / AP file Commanders running back Clinton Portis won't play Sunday against the Cowboys.

Updated: 28 minutes ago
ASHBURN, Va. - Washington Commanders coach Joe Gibbs ruled Clinton Portis out for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, an announcement that surprised Portis and created yet another twist in the running back’s injury saga.

“He didn’t practice today. ... If a guy doesn’t practice, he’s not going to play,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs said Ladell Betts, T.J. Duckett and Rock Cartwright will be the running backs against the Cowboys. Portis was downgraded from questionable to doubtful on the injury report, with Gibbs citing the pounding Portis took in the Monday night season opener against Minnesota.

“It’s really just because of soreness,” Gibbs said. “Actually, it’s in a different spot in his shoulder. He’s got some soreness there that lingered and kept him from practicing this week.”

When told what Gibbs had said, Portis didn’t know the decision already had been made.

“I thought it was a game-time decision,” he said. “As of now, my bag’s packed and ready to go to Dallas, unless they come and tap me on the shoulder in the near future and tell me I ain’t going.”

Last week, it was just the opposite. Portis spent several days downplaying his chances to make the season opener, saying he was not in football shape and had yet to recover from a partially dislocated left shoulder that caused him to miss nearly all of preseason. But after the final practice, Gibbs sprung a surprise, saying Portis had tested the shoulder sufficiently and would play as a backup to Betts.

Portis carried 10 times for 39 yards in the 19-16 loss to the Vikings, but he has complained of soreness all week.

“I can’t do nothing but tell you to wait until Sunday. This bag is going to Dallas,” said Portis, pointing at the equipment bag in front of his locker. “We have seen some miracle days happen. This ain’t no situation for me not to be playing in.”

As usual, Portis wavered from serious to playful, making it difficult to discern whether he really feels he can play. At one point, he said: “I eat gunpowder twice a day now. As long as I’m on this gunpowder, I think I’m going to be all right.”

He took a more serious tone when he expressed frustration over the week-to-week drama his injury has become.

“I’m be happy when I’m healthy,” Portis said. “Hopefully we can get this over with real soon and I can join my teammates and be on the field and it’s not an issue,” Portis said. “I don’t like this being an issue going into the weekend. Am I up or down? Playing or not? Whatever’s best for the team.”

Portis wore pads and said he “ran a few routes” during Friday’s practice, but apparently that wasn’t enough.

“He’ll probably tell me he can play on game day, but he didn’t practice so we’ll move him down accordingly,” Gibbs said. “Hopefully he’s going to be back next week, that would be my hope.”

Perhaps......but you aren't in the heads of every Cowboy. You never know what is going through the mind of others. To them, this is a job, not some college ra ra. You just never know.

I never underestimated him. In fact, I acknowledged that his absence will hurt them on the field.

However, some Skins fans would have us believe that the Skins sucked in preseason because they only used 2% of the playbook, that they intentionally lost the home opener to conceal the true strength of the team, and now that Gibbs downgraded Portis to force Parcells into a tactical error.

Frankly, it's exhausting.
