Drew Pearson was not drafted. In college at Tulsa he was a QB, not a WR. In fact, in High School he replaced a QB who went on to have a career in the NFL and won a Super Bowl. Drew Pearson QBed his High School team after Joe Theismann graduated and went to Notre Dame.

Drew's father-in-law was Marcus Haines of the world famous Harlem Globetrotters.

The host city for all 3 of Dallas Super Bowl losses was Miami, Florida. This year's host city, Miami, Florida.

But that was the Orange Bowl.

Dallas has been undefeated in Joe Robbie Stadium (or whatever they call it).

Former Giants Jesse Armstead openly resented Dallas for not drafting them.

You know, I would not have had a problem if the Cowboys would have drafted Michael Barrow and Jesse Armstead right after they picked Williams and Darren Smith in the 1993 draft.

Jimmy Johnson knew them, and they were playmakers. Coming off the greatest season in Cowboys history, they were not desperate to fill a position.

Years ago the Cowboys had open tryouts all the time. One time they were trying out Kickers. A city bus pulled up full of passengers. The bus driver got out, kicked a couple of field goals and returned to his bus route.

He wasn't signed.

Walt Garrison used to tell a great story about how Bob Lilly could touch his own eyeball. He would practice it during film study. His theory was that if someone got their fingers in his face mask he wouldn't blink and lose sight of the ball. In every action picture you see of Bob Lilly his eyes are wide open and honed in on the ball.

Wow. That is sort of spooky, practicing touching your own eye.

The Cowboys lead the league in former WRs who have gone on to have a great career in the CFL.:

In the Cowboys first draft (1961) they selected 4 players who would go on to be selected for 5 or more Pro-Bowls in their careers, two of them are in the HoF.

Now that's what I call good scouting!

Unfortunately for us, only one of them, Bob Lilly, elected to sign with the Cowboys.

Two of the other 3 were also drafted by and signed with the Buffalo Bills of the AFL: HoFer OG Billy Shaw and OT Stew Barber.

The 3rd player was C/LB E.J. Holub who signed with the Dallas Texans (KC Chiefs now).

Lilly was also drafted by the Texans but elected to sign with us for which I am eternally grateful!

I have often wondered how much more quickly our team would have been built if not for the AFL competing for players.

In 1964 we drafted 3 future HoFers:

Mel Renfro in the 2nd round, Bob Hayes in the 7th round, and Roger Staubach in the 10th.

Interestingly enough, our first round pick was highly regarded Texas DT Scott Appleton who was also drafted by the Houston Oilers and signed with them. We had traded his rights to the Stealers for veteran WR Buddy Dial but Appleton decided for the AFL instead. We kept Dial and the Stealers got nothing! :D

What Cowboys player averaged 12.5 sacks per year (unofficially) for 6 straight seasons?

Jethro Pugh, from 1968-1973. Pugh retired with 95.5 sacks to his credit. (The Cowboys kept their own sack records from about 1964 on, the NFL didn't begin recording sacks officially until 1982).

Bob Lilly is credited with 94.5 sacks but I don't believe they counted his first couple of seasons. The same goes for George Andrie who had 97 sacks but is probably our real all-time sack leader (Harvey Martin is the recognized leader with 114) if they would have counted his first couple of years.

The weird thing is, Pugh was never selected to the Pro-Bowl although he was named to the AP 2nd-team All NFL team in 1968 when he had 15.5 sacks. IMO Pugh was the most under-appreciated player ever.

Everyone knows the Cowboys drafted Bob Hayes the Olympic 100 Champion. The World's Fastest Human. The Bullet. Hayes also played football at Florida A & I, so it wasn't a huge reach.

The Cowboys did like to gamble in the Draft. Some of them paid off.

In 1985 the Cowboys drafted Herschel Walker in the 5th round. He was the property of the New Jersey Generals of the USFL having left Georgia early and unexpectedly. Had he remained in the Draft, he would have been the overall #1 pick for sure.

The year before that in 1984, the Cowboys took a gamble and drafted Track and Field superstar Carl Lewis. He was a student at Houston. He was selected as a WR, but never gave football a try.

In 1967 the Cowboys drafted a WR out of Kentucky named Pat Riley. He was a basketball player on Adolf Rupp's Wildcat squad. He is best known for being the Head Coach of the Showtime Los Angeles Lakers and the GM and Head Coach of the Miami Heat. He is a basketball Hall of Famer.

The Cowboys have had good luck drafting Basketball players. Also in 1967 they selected Rayfield Wright from Ft. Valley State. He was drafted as a TE but was moved to RT. He never gave up a sack in his NFL career. "Thou shalt not touch Roger Staubach" was one of his commandments. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Cornell Green still holds many basketball records at Utah State University. He was signed as a Free Agent in 1962. He was an All American in 1960 and 1961. He is still the all time leading rebounder in Utah State History as a 6'4" Forward. He is their 5th all time leading scorer. He was a 5 time Pro Bowl player at a CB and Safety. He had 34 career interceptions.

In 1966 the Cowboys drafted a football player out of Oklahoma State at FB. His name was Walt Garrison. Walt had no intentions of playing football. He was planning on becoming a rodeo Cowboy.

I am sure I am forgetting some.

The Carl Lewis draft pick was one that I always used to dream about as a little kid when I found out about it.

The Pat Riley one too -- really interesting stuff.

I always thought Karl Malone would have made an outstanding TE in the NFL.

He is also very famous for his runs, as coach, in the playoffs with the Hearbreak Kid New York Knicks.

I knew there were more commandments. I knew it. When Mel Brooks dropped one of the templates I was sure this was on there.

And yet Staubach was sacked at about twice the rate that Romo is.

And that was before holding was legal, and almost everything was thrown down field.

The ONLY 5-11 seasons in Cowboys History belong to the same Head Coach, Dave "The Poodle" Campo.

8 of his 15 victories as a Head Coach were over 2 teams. The Commanders and the Panthers. 5-1 vs. the Skins, 3-0 vs. the Cats.

Jay Novacek once called me "Steely", I was 12 years old.

I once asked Troy Aikman to guarantee a Super Bowl victory, he lied...to a 12 year old.

Daryl Johnston had a musk.
