I got my flu shot this year. I still woke up one night vomiting.

Coincidentally, it was the week Tyron missed practice because he was vomiting too. Interesting...

People use the term "flu" incorrectly often.

We are talking here about the "influenza virus" which does not usually have nausea or vomiting as a prominent symptom and it certainly would never be the main or most prominent symptom.

You probably had what many people call the "stomach flu" which is usually related either to a gastrointestinal virus or eating contaminated food. Other people mistakenly confuse the "common cold" with the flu. This tendency is exacerbated by the fact they have the same seasonality (they do call it "cold and flu" season) and cause similar symptoms.

Why bother with these explanations?

People believe you get the flu from the vaccine. People believe the flu shot is ineffective. People believe big pharma is behind the push for vaccination. People believe various vaccines make you autistic. People believe that if they avoided the flu in the past without a flu shot that it means they will always do so in the future. People even believe that their google-based knowledge should carry the same weight as a physician's.

Sometimes,. I wish for public health reasons that our nation was more like those that require immunizations - no exemptions, no just not getting them. Required.

I just like to try add some rationality in whenever I can.

The tin foil hat guys tend to scream a lot louder and be more fervent in their beliefs but they are not the majority. If others don't speak out it can seem as though they are at times.

I know what you are talking about with the "flu reactions". Some of the nurses I work with will complain about their "reactions" which are really often just the common cold which was caught incidentally because it happened to be going around at the time.

Probably because Eskimo is interested in having a conversation with people instead of trying to impose his beliefs on others.

Do you normally exaggerate or in some cases fabricate the opposition's point?

People even believe that their google-based knowledge should carry the same weight as a physician's.

So you wish that common knowledge was only available to the formally trained?

Also do you normally just ignore posts that state not all physicians believe in being vaccinated for influenza?

Sometimes,. I wish for public health reasons that our nation was more like those that require immunizations - no exemptions, no just not getting them. Required.

So you wish we didn't live in a democracy?

Just for clarity by "tin foil hat" types I'm not talking about people who believe on the balance of things that vaccines will not result in a major health benefit. I do believe there is a benefit but it is not huge for healthy young people. I do think that could tip more favorably if there were more herd immunity if we got 80% of the population vaccinated. The "tin foil hat" types are the people who report totally unsubstantiated beliefs about the vaccines as though they were facts.

The main reason I get the vaccine other than the fact that I work with old and sick patients is that I do believe that there is benefit to a society as a whole from getting vaccinated. If more of us did it, it would be much harder for epidemics to break out and that improves the health for all of us and especially for those who are old and have weakened immune systems.

The flu vaccine wouldn't by my number one target for population health. That would be your standard childhood immunization schedule. There are some very nasty illnesses in there that just aren't common now because the vast majority of children participate in the voluntary vaccination of their children. Still the damage perpetuated by falsified research about MMR and its link to autism has done so much damage to public health that the doctor (Andrew Wakefield) responsible should really be put in jail for the amount of morbidity he has inflicted on the general public. Also the amount of guilt he may have inflicted on parents who believe their choice was responsible for their child's development of autism should also not be ignored.

Sorry to hijack the flu debate, but Crawford's illness is now being called an "allergic reaction"...

This one has been a bit all over the place. Last night the story had again changed to some type of a throat infection.

Based on Stephen Jones' last interview it sounds like he will probably be playing.
