Practice Squad Question

If Philly decides to make a move to get Amendola or Jefferson off of our practice squad, what is the window time frame we have to elevate the one they want to our active roster?

It would be bad to lose a young WR prospect but a double wammy if we had to watch that young prospect develop for a division rival.

Don't know the time frame.

However from what I understand they wanted him to join their practice squad as well, not their active roster. He turned them down even though it was said they offered more money.

Again, not sure about if they offered him an active roster spot, but since he cleared waivers they don't have to offer him that. It is only mandatory, from my understanding, for them to put him on the active roster if they claimed him off waivers.

Thanks BP, I don't think a player can switch between practice squads. It has to be from squad to active roster. Since Danny choose to stay with us, it sounds like they have a choice. So for now there're ours. I was thinking it is a 24 or 48 hour window. Just unsure..??..

Aren't PS guys basically like FAs if they clear waivers. They can choose to sign with another team or they can choose to stay where they are. Is that right?

Right. PS players are all paid the same amount, so there is no negotiating of more money to go to another team. Or that was the was it use to be, probably still is.
They can leave for any other team at any time, providing they are put on the active roster.
They can at their courtesy inform the team they have an offer, to see what the current team will do. But it's not a requirement. So there is no window of opportunity.

I think you are wrong about the pay and the team rights.

If another team wants a player off the practice squad they have to put him on the active roster. Before they can do it the team that has him on the practice squad can add him to their active roster and the player stays on that team.

There is a minimum salary, but there is no maximum salary. Using Danny as an example, Philly could have offered Amendola more money to join their practice squad. Once he or any other eligible player cleared waivers they could have been signed to any other teams practice squad. If Philly wants him now, they have to sign him to their 53 man roster and keep him for at least 3 weeks on the active roster before they can cut him if they desire. I don't know if there is any time requirement that Dallas would be given to match the offer if Philly pursued Amendola to their active roster.

Minimum salary for a practice squad player:

$4,700 per week for 2006-07
$5,200 per week for 2008-10 and 2011 if it is an Uncapped Year
$5,700 per week for 2011 if it is a Capped Year and the 2012

But the guys on the PS still have the freedom to say no and stay on their current practice squad, right? Its not like being on the PS is like being in a permament state of waivers, right?

That's still pretty good scratch for a guy with minimal NFL talent. I wonder what Jerry is giving him and what the Eagles offered. Also, is there a limit on how many years a guy can be on the PS? If a guy can hang onto a PS spot for 3 years, he's doing pretty good $$ wise.

Guys on the PS are free agents as far as being signed to the 53 man roster. They just can't go from one PS to another once they are on one.

The practice squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad:

(i) players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL experience; and

(ii) free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine regular season games during their only Accrued Season(s).

Don't worry about it...any team in the NFL could have signed either of these guys to their 53 man roster for a song last week, but no one wanted them on their roster, including us. Neither of these guys are that talented, not saying they won't become serviceable in time.

If some team has injuries and comes looking to sign these guys, trust me...I feel pretty comfortable in saying we'd let them walk. We're not going to cut someone from our 53 man roster unless injured or sucking badly to bring these guys up.

That's correct. Anyone raiding another's PS must place that player on their active 53. Otherwise they'd be playing musical chairs with PS players all year long.

did Lattimore get signed somewhere else because I don't see why he isn't on our PS.

They have 3 running backs on the 53 that they like. They must think Coleman is better. They have Crosslin on the PS as a full back. That doesn't leave too much room for another running back.

I thought Lattimore was doing/did better than him o well I guess.

When Lattimore stepped out of bounds a half a yard short of the 1st down marker against Minnesota, it probably sealed his fate.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

You'll all confirmed basically what I thought.

There has to be a decision period when another team wants to activate your squad player.

It's kind of like a contingent contract when buying property. If another buyer wants the property you have a cont. contract on, then you have a 72 hour window to close the deal or you lose the property.

I kind of remember something of this nature for squad players.
