Predict the FA Mindset

Probably both but you can't use just the loyalty excuse for the slop they started the season with last year at the skill positions. I hate Dak Prescott like he molested my Mother but he had no chance throwing to the garbage that took the field in the opener. That was a clear case of an inability to evaluate talent.

Haha yeah well put. Wasn't defending them, I'm just not sure where their obsession with their own comes from.

Take DLaw for example, he's got a good chance to stay regardless of cost because we drafted him and JJ is loyal. But is it to the talent evaluation, the intangibles, the marketing/merchandise sales? Zeke may also get extended without sufficient concern for the future and exploration of other options for the same reason.

I've even read that part of why DLaw is comfortable playing under the tag is because he knows Dallas will take care of him if something bad happens. What the heck does that mean? Would we hurt our cap to say sorry?

It's true for lower players as well. I think Heath as fine as a #3 or #4 but as a starter, that one's probably a talent evaluation fail. We could do worse than Crawford if, again, he's not forced to start like Heath. Crawford starting seems like an intangible obsession failure.

It’s clear they simply struggle at assessing and evaluating current NFL talent and their value.

At least to any non-homer fan that has been paying attention.
Feels like the Rams game should’ve been a wake up call to anyone who thought we had self scouted well lately. As well as all the times we’ve had problems personnel wise before the season that are blatantly pointed out (WR this year, pass rusher 2-3 years ago) that we claim isn’t a problem and then end up committing massive amounts of resources to either the next offseason or mid season.

They entered the year empty handed at WR for sure. That's a mark against.

But there's a mark in their favor. They recognized the problem and took effective steps to resolve it.

Cooper and Gallup could be our best 1-2 combo in years. If they nabbed a guy like Humphries they'd have their best 1-2-3 in a very, very long time. They'll probably re-sign someone like Beasley or use a midround pick on that slot guy though. Capable depth behind them.

So it was a fail followed by a win. Big, effective rebuild in short time, necessitated by a total failure of self scouting. Not sure how to feel about it all things considered.

I predict that no matter what the Cowboys do you'll ***** and moan like a little child sarcastically all the while ignoring your Wentz is the greatest analysis.

I’d say that’s accurate. FO, (McClay) seems to do a good job of identifying talent. Even the lower end guys we bring in seem to do a good job for their cost and overall our drafts have been excellent lately, but you’d hope we get better at seeing holes beforehand including in the coaching staff.

Their mindset will be the same as every other year, overpay 'our own guys' and then shop in the free agent bargain bin. There might be the added trade of DLaw if they don't want to overpay too much but things will be pretty much status qoe. Just wait, you'll see.

I guess it depends on how you view the FO. Some might want to give them credit for recognizing their mistake and having to largely be forced into trading their #1 pick.

But for others, the fact this FO thought they were fine at WR heading into the season shows some typical ineptitude from these guys.

I would have went with “like his dog bite off my moms finger “ but carry on

I think we’re done shopping in the clearance rack... we’ve upgraded to layaway.

Our mindset? Dak, D-Law, and Jeff Heath would go first, second, and third respectively if they entered the draft today.

Mindset is sign your own.

However, I expect we will make a splash with ET. We woefully need turnovers and will take the gamble

depends what you all view as aggressive, but I feel we will be. I think ET is a Cowboy by Monday night...maybe even Justin Houston.

after the Gregory mistake lets call it...Houston would be a welcome sight on the young dline...a calming force.

Yeah, put me down for the FO thinking they didn't need a #1 WR, and letting their QB say that crap to the media.

Uh, running back by committee after letting DeMo walk was pretty dumb, but it help get Zeke.

They do miss and say some questionable stuff, still waiting for Tavon Austin to get those 10 touches a game.

Normally I would say business as usual as Jerry and his idiot boy scrounge around in the bargin bin at Walmart looking for players that all suck.

HOWEVER...………………they know Clappy needs to win something more than a Wildcard game to justify a new extension,

So for Clappy's sake, I think they try to sign ET and maybe one other notable free agent.

I'm detecting a touch of impatience across the board, like people want the Cowboys to already be making moves they can't actually make until free agency begins.

It's easy now to sit around and say we never do anything in FA, but this is our first year with lots of space, the DLaw situation is coming to a head, etc. Normally I wouldn't predict a big start, as they've been frugal to get to this point.

This year, I dont know what to expect. They seem to be considering win-now mode, and they might only be one "win-now" offseason from a SB run, like we've seen many teams do this last decade.

I wouldn't be surprised by another quiet start that locks us into overpaying DLaw. But this year, I also wouldn't be surprised by early fireworks like a trade of DLaw for picks followed by a high profile, cheaper DL signing and a safety, ET or any of a number of more affordable, great options.

I expect something in the middle is most likely. More aggressive than usual, but still sticking to their principles. For example, I think we'll see more "bridge players", but in the 5 to 10M range instead of the 2 to 4M range. I think there will also be an attempt to trade DLaw and recover a 1st round pick, which I expect will fail.

So I'm not asking you to predict what the Cowboys will do, but in general, what do you think their approach will be, or their intensity/aggressiveness, when the talk is over and 2019 Free Agency opens up?

The Cowboys best time period of acquiring talent since Jimmy departed has been within the past 5 years.

The Cowboys reluctance to sign free agents has occurred primarily in this same time period.

It's funny how fans complain about the lack of free agents.

I'm sorry, I tried to be courteous.

There's a possibility we're both wrong if you ask me. I view this year as the experiment which answers a question I've had for years - what would they do when their frugality paid off and the cap ballooned.

I'm not one for hypotheticals, I make observations and wait for more evidence to observe and keep expanding my take on the matter.

That poster loves the Eagles and hates the Cowboys. Don't let him derail you.

The problem has been the team has gone bargin hunting and signed scrubs that dont ever pan out instead of singing one really good player. Here is an example of what I am talking about.

Cowboys sign four lower tier players and gives each of them $3 million...……….they all suck and are non-factors for the season.

Better plan...………...give the $12 million you just spent on scrubs to one really good tier one player that will contribute.

Same money spent, but do you see the difference?

Is it the talent they overrate or is it the loyalty and intangibles?

Like do they actually think someone such as Crawford is super talented or are they just so in love with the intangibles that they dont think a talent upgrade is needed?

They've tried to replace Crawford but the replacements have not worked out to the point of making Crawford expendable.

Each year Crawford either plays the most DL snaps or the 2nd most with the exception of 1 year when he was 3rd.

Crawford has played RDE, LDE and 3-tech DT.

Players expected to replace him:
LDE
DLaw did replace him; although it was actually Crawford's best position.

RDE
Gregory/Taco/Mayowa > drugs/attitude/run-defense.

3-tech DT
M.Collins - Good but playing through injury every year has limited him.

Irving - Idiot

Datone Jones - Mid season acquisition in 2017 looked good but injured in 2018 training camp and placed on IR.
