Potential is the absence of production. And they overrate their own talent. It's one of their biggest sins.

Probably both but you can't use just the loyalty excuse for the slop they started the season with last year at the skill positions. I hate Dak Prescott like he molested my Mother but he had no chance throwing to the garbage that took the field in the opener. That was a clear case of an inability to evaluate talent.
Feels like the Rams game should’ve been a wake up call to anyone who thought we had self scouted well lately. As well as all the times we’ve had problems personnel wise before the season that are blatantly pointed out (WR this year, pass rusher 2-3 years ago) that we claim isn’t a problem and then end up committing massive amounts of resources to either the next offseason or mid season. It’s clear they simply struggle at assessing and evaluating current NFL talent and their value.
At least to any non-homer fan that has been paying attention.

I predict that no matter what the Cowboys do you'll ***** and moan like a little child sarcastically all the while ignoring your Wentz is the greatest analysis.Probably both but you can't use just the loyalty excuse for the slop they started the season with last year at the skill positions. I’d say that’s accurate. FO, (McClay) seems to do a good job of identifying talent. Even the lower end guys we bring in seem to do a good job for their cost and overall our drafts have been excellent lately, but you’d hope we get better at seeing holes beforehand including in the coaching staff. They entered the year empty handed at WR for sure. That's a mark against.
But there's a mark in their favor. They recognized the problem and took effective steps to resolve it.
Cooper and Gallup could be our best 1-2 combo in years. If they nabbed a guy like Humphries they'd have their best 1-2-3 in a very, very long time. They'll probably re-sign someone like Beasley or use a midround pick on that slot guy though. Capable depth behind them.
So it was a fail followed by a win. Big, effective rebuild in short time, necessitated by a total failure of self scouting. Not sure how to feel about it all things considered.

I would have went with “like his dog bite off my moms finger “ but carry onProbably both but you can't use just the loyalty excuse for the slop they started the season with last year at the skill positions. Yeah, put me down for the FO thinking they didn't need a #1 WR, and letting their QB say that crap to the media.I guess it depends on how you view the FO. Some might want to give them credit for recognizing their mistake and having to largely be forced into trading their #1 pick.
But for others, the fact this FO thought they were fine at WR heading into the season shows some typical ineptitude from these guys.
I'm detecting a touch of impatience across the board, like people want the Cowboys to already be making moves they can't actually make until free agency begins.
It's easy now to sit around and say we never do anything in FA, but this is our first year with lots of space, the DLaw situation is coming to a head, etc. Normally I wouldn't predict a big start, as they've been frugal to get to this point.
This year, I dont know what to expect. They seem to be considering win-now mode, and they might only be one "win-now" offseason from a SB run, like we've seen many teams do this last decade.
I wouldn't be surprised by another quiet start that locks us into overpaying DLaw. But this year, I also wouldn't be surprised by early fireworks like a trade of DLaw for picks followed by a high profile, cheaper DL signing and a safety, ET or any of a number of more affordable, great options.
I expect something in the middle is most likely. More aggressive than usual, but still sticking to their principles. For example, I think we'll see more "bridge players", but in the 5 to 10M range instead of the 2 to 4M range. I think there will also be an attempt to trade DLaw and recover a 1st round pick, which I expect will fail.
So I'm not asking you to predict what the Cowboys will do, but in general, what do you think their approach will be, or their intensity/aggressiveness, when the talk is over and 2019 Free Agency opens up?
I'm sorry, I tried to be courteous.
There's a possibility we're both wrong if you ask me. I view this year as the experiment which answers a question I've had for years - what would they do when their frugality paid off and the cap ballooned.
I'm not one for hypotheticals, I make observations and wait for more evidence to observe and keep expanding my take on the matter.
The Cowboys best time period of acquiring talent since Jimmy departed has been within the past 5 years.
The Cowboys reluctance to sign free agents has occurred primarily in this same time period.
It's funny how fans complain about the lack of free agents.
Is it the talent they overrate or is it the loyalty and intangibles?
Like do they actually think someone such as Crawford is super talented or are they just so in love with the intangibles that they dont think a talent upgrade is needed?
