Premature Evaluations

It is the nature of fans to seek instant satisfaction. At times we do it and we look extra foolish. Like we've had some premature evaluations.

Tonight on the radio show I brought up 3 things a vast majority of fans were saying in pre-season and...oops, a little too quick on the trigger there.

1. Danny Amendola was the next Wes Welker.

Okay, so not everyone was saying it, but my gosh every topic about a WR returned to this kid and how he ran precise routes and had great hands and could pat his head and run his belly at the same time. Maybe he can develop into an NFL Wide Receiver. He was anointed great before he ever put a skin on the wall. Something we are still waiting for.

2. Martellus Bennett was an idiot, we blew it by getting rid of Fasano, we should cut him right now.

Going to be real honest with you here. I never did watch the rest of Hard Knocks after people got stupid because of one episode that had very little to do with what this kid can do on a football field. I lost interest. How foolish do his critics look now?

3. Tank Johnson is going to be our starting NT and free up Ratliff to move to DE and Tank is going to be our defensive anchor.

Okay, I admit it openly. I was driving this bandwagon. I must have been loaded on Nyquil. I could not have been in my right mind. He's had spurts of the kind of play I expected, but my gosh, and anchor? Only if I meant he was going to drag us to the depths and drown us.

As a special bonus I would also like to add that many thought we didn't need a backup QB. Brad Johnson is fine. Did you see the Minnesota game in Pre-season? Gag a maggot on a gut wagon.

I know we'll fall into the same traps next year, and the next, and so on.

I, like a few others, tried to tell some of the Amendola crew that is was a bit too early to anoint him as the next Welker.

I'm a Tech grad and I saw them both play, and while Amendola was a fine college WR, he just didn't have the "it" factor that Welker did/does.

All that said, there's still a chance he can be a decent receiver, and again as a Tech and Cowboys fan, I'd be all for it.

Love that Bennett has risen above some of the negative first impressions (thanks in part, to HBO), and like you Hos, I'm stunned that Tank has been as much of a non-factor that he is.

Haha this is so true.

I never thought much of Danny Amendola. My guy was and still is Stanback. next year hopefully We'll see.

I thought Kosier was our weak link. I feel really dumb now.

I wanted Mendenhall over Felix....WOW was I OFF!!.

It's cool thought, This is what Football is all about.

i didnt like mendenhall, but that isnt fair. he was injured before his season really even began.....for me it was charles who i wanted over jones, and he has done zero for KC. Of course, I also wanted Chris Johnson, Kevin Smith, or Matt Forte. I feel like a fool for not wanting Stewart.

Hos, allow me to add one that can be retracted at some point down the road if he shows up.

Miles Austin

He will at some point play the slot with this team. With TO and RoyUT being the players other teams will concentrate on, Austin needs to have a break-out game.

Not just a couple of passes, but a 5 plus pass, 100 plus yard game with a TD or more.

He has the speed. He has the size.

Now figure how to stay healthy and show the team you will deserve a long term contract.

I continue seeing fans put this guy on a pedistal, and have yet to see what he brings.

Show me a break out game. Impress me.

1. Danny Amendola was the next Wes Welker.

I figured so much people were talking well about him, that there had to be something special about the guy. Turned out to be he was featured on the tv. Don't really know how he is developing or if he is still on this team. Took Wes 2-3 years before he made it big, and that was only cause he was part of the unstoppable 16-0 pats, who were stopped. If he is special, like most late drafted rookies on this team, we wont see anything from him unless theres injuries.

2. Martellus Bennett was an idiot, we blew it by getting rid of Fasano, we should cut him right now.

I understand how the TV industry has to edit their shows for audiences, so I could see how this guy was portrayed to be an idiot. But some of the footage where he was rolling his eyes when coaches were talking to him could have fooled his own momma. Still young, ask me again in 3 years.

3. Tank Johnson is going to be our starting NT and free up Ratliff to move to DE and Tank is going to be our defensive anchor.

I never believed this, because it was too long to read and if it was too long to read, it would take too long to implement.

I have to disagree with your Amendola pick. There were some of us that jumped the gun hype-wise (myself included), but it wasn't that anyone was saying he was going to be great...it was more like people were saying he has a shot to make the team. Big deal. (Oh, and Nors, guess who is still on the roster.) MANY MORE people took offense to this than were supporting it....at least as far as people that were posting on this forum.

Stanback. Now there is some 'jumping the gun'....and no one really seemed to oppose the thought.

Could be Casino Royale but I would have to go with Moving starring one Richard Pryor.

I'll admit that a lot of people were hoping that. And it still could be true. It took another team to find out what he could do so that may happen here. But I have no faith that he ever truely makes it off the practice squad for us. Maybe for a game or an end of the season, but never a start of a season unless there is an injury in camp.

I have been behind Bennett but Fasano has been a beast for Miami. The guy can play and he will be a starter for a while. Bennett will have a very good career, though. I just hope he gets his blocking down.

Hehehe. Yeah. But wasn't that mostly hope that we could get Ratliff to light it up at DE and not lose anything at Nose? I think people still want to see Ratliff at DE and want a real Nose brought in.

I owuld have gone with:

1) Our defense was going to pwn everybody

2) We don't have a QB behind Romo (wait.. that one was right)

3) Pacman won't have any troubles because he knows this is his last chance.. again. No, wait. Now it's his last chance. Err... wait again..

4. The DALLAS COWBOYS would easily win the NFC East and skate into the Super Bowl.

I drove this bandwagon and still believe we are going to the SB, however, I do not believe we can catch the giants......:bang2:

Yeah, this one could be added. I was mostly talking about personnel assessments by the couch GMs who saw Hard Knocks.

I have to say that I was on the right side of all the 3 you mentioned :)

But anyway, how about 2 that I was wrong on:

1. Orlando Scandrick is going to contribute, and be better this season than Mike Jenkins.

I thought this was ridiculous, and lots of people were saying this. But so far he HAS contributed and he HAS been better than Mike Jenkins so far. So the general consensus has been right and I've been wrong on this one.

2. Zach Thomas is going to surprise people and be a playmaker.

I thought this was going to happen, along with a lot of people. He looked great in training camp and preseason. But while he's been an upgrade over Akin Ayodele (not saying much, Ayodele was not very good last season) AND probably better than Bradie James, I'm sure people would agree that he hasn't been a playmaker.

Actually, you can argue that our best linebacker this year other than Ware has been Kevin Burnett (when healthy).

For all his amazing talent, I still don't think Bennett is a sure thing. He could go either way ... turn into a great, great player, or do the minimum and just get by.

Those of us who watched Amendola all four years at Texas Tech knew he was no Wes Welker. He has some of the same skills and is similar in size, but they're still two different players. Amendola could still find a place in this league.

Tank Johnson has been a disappointment. Wasn't it Coach Jones who was touting him all through training camp?

Oh, and TD, my only concern with Austin is his durability. Romo raved about the guy after Sunday night's game.

5. Brad Johnson will push Tony Romo for the starting QB job

Oh yeah this one almost had me.

The post I really enjoyed was the poster ImonRoshi or whatever said:

I've hated Bennett since high school
Niiiiiice one...
